after upgrade to high Sierra I have a problems with freezing. Previous week freeze two times, when I work with photoshop, now freeze, when have only browser opened, black screen, I must to turn off and turn on computer. Previous version Sierra works great.

I think I found where the issue is. WindowServer on High Sierra seems to leak memory quite fast when Scaled resolutions are used. This is with both internal retina display and external display. Specially with 4K displays. With internal retina and scaled resolution the memory leak seems to be quite moderate and you probably get only one freeze per day. But with attached 4K display WindowServer seems to leak memory as fast as 0.2GB/10min and grows beyond some limit quite fast.
Setting all display resolutions to "default" solves the problem. I guess nobody at Apple QA runs scaled displays.
I hadn't considered the possibility that the problem may be rooted in the firmware--thank you for raising it. And yes, if the crashes recur for me, I'm going to save the console logs and send in bug reports to Apple as well.
I am eating for a new update, I update to newest version 10.13, but this update not solve my problem.
After freeze I do not restart computer and wait, after wait a couple of minutes, I see the scrambled screen, different shapes, etc. I think the problem is with Metal 2 graphics technology, with is not complete debugged! No problem with external hard drive, I don't use, when it happened, no problem with I cloud synchronization. Why Apple do not solve this big problem. Thank you
I experience this exact issue with the same problems with the external display attached or using the built-in display. Same experience if I only use the laptop display or unplug the external display when the freeze occurs. Glad I'm not the only one.
So I tried doing a system restore to a Time Machine backup of macOS Sierra that I had, but the problem persisted. Normally that would suggest to me that the OS was not the cause, but as another commenter on here pointed out, the firmware updates that accompanied High Sierra may not have been undone by my system restore.
So I am now going to try wiping my hard drive entirely and doing a clean install of Sierra, in the hope that that may resolve the issue. Will report back once my reinstallation is complete.
Spk—interesting findings, but they do not apply in my case as I am running a 2012 iMac 21.5” with a 1920x1080 display at default resolution.
I just finished wiping my hard drive and I’m in the process of installing the older OS now. Will report back with more updates later.
same thing is happening to me. macbook pro never froze - EVER - before upgrading to high sierra.
apple really needs to fix this, this is like windows prob and blue screen of death status. how can they do this?
they remove all the ports from their hardware and then make buggy OS's now? what the h@ll apple? you're better than this.
Am experiencing similar issues on a 2015 iMac... Since updated to High Sierra, I get regular screen freezing when minimising windows or moving/switching/closing apps. The mouse cursor still moves on the screen but nothing else can be done for about 10 seconds... occasionally, the screen remains frozen and a hard restart needs to be made. Prior to updating from Sierra, everything was running perfectly. Hopefully a fix comes soon!
I have experienced the same lockup, and - my new MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017) was installed by recovering from a time-machine backup of a MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2013) also running high-sierra.
Given that, explanation that this might be related to extensions (had the same extensions on the old mac) or something specific to my account settings, is less than convinecing
Unfortunately I've tried your options. And no positive result. Still freezes.
And another problem is when opening a file from the server a pop-up screen appears and states an iconlike Filevault with the message '... is controlling the file.' After a while the file opens.
2 times today, my MacPro has restarted after it has been unused for a shorter period of time.

I just copied the bug report I sent yesterday into Open Radar, so you can see and follow it there. But when doing this I noticed my bug had already been marked as a duplicate (I wonder why I haven’t seen an email telling me that yet, as I usually get when bugs are updated...), so let’s hope that it gets fixed in a soon-to-be-released update. I will definitely report in Open Radar on any changes I see to the bug report’s status, which should include when the bug it is marked as a duplicate off gets closed. Once it is closed we can hope that a fix will be included in the next update.

Just running Disk Utility on that array takes about 36 hours (it's bigger than 14TB)
Deep gloom. I have taken my IMac back to basics and reinstalled HS with Apple supervision. I then moved my folders from Time Machine to the HD taking care not to move any of the old system files in Library. I had to reinstall Pages etc but no third party apps and it has crashed twice, both times when I was waiting online for a response from my bank or internet provider. I have a pretty useless Mac. Not impressed.

Thank you for the detailed response. I am having problems with exactly the same symptoms as you describe on a late 2013 iMac (purchased early 2015). The problems started the day after I upgraded to High Sierra. They include freezing with still-operable cursor and music.
