I think I found where the issue is. WindowServer on High Sierra seems to leak memory quite fast when Scaled resolutions are used. This is with both internal retina display and external display. Specially with 4K displays. With internal retina and scaled resolution the memory leak seems to be quite moderate and you probably get only one freeze per day. But with attached 4K display WindowServer seems to leak memory as fast as 0.2GB/10min and grows beyond some limit quite fast.

Setting all display resolutions to "default" solves the problem. I guess nobody at Apple QA runs scaled displays.

I've had 3 freezes on my Retina MBP Early 2013 since installing High Sierra. All of them have come when I've been at work connected to an external Dell monitor, through Thunderbolt to DVI. This last time it, the system had been up for over 4 days when I started Postman and then it froze. Music was still playing and I was able to SSH into the machine, however, issuing a reboot did nothing. I check /var/log/system.log but didn't notice anything in particular. I'll save a copy of it just in case.

Thanks for your thoughts. I checked compatibilty of my apps before installing HS as advised. They were all fine. After the full factory reset I did not reload any apps other than Pages and Numbers and the frequency of crashes increased. It has never gappened on any account other tham my Administrator one, thus discounting hardware problems. I have been advised by a non Apple guru that the issue may lie in the log files - a bit above my grade!

Hi,

How do you enable "send them information about crashes"? I have a freeze at least once a day. It's been a pain that I can so far live with, but I want to get rid of it. I have a 2012 MacBook Pro 15" with 16gb of RAM and a 750GB HD. Never had a freeze problem before High Sierra. I use a 27" UHD Dell monitor connected by Thunderbolt. Reading these comments I wonder if that could be the problem cause the freezes. I updated my wife's 13" MacBook Pro with 8GB of RAM and a 512GB HD. She never uses an external monitor. Her MacBook has not had any freeze problems. I did submit a bug report to Apple. Any other suggestions? I am not a developer, I just stumbled on this discussion by googling the "freeze" issue. Thanks!

leroydouglas, how do you suggest to really test this problem. From all I have experience and read in this thread this is a random issue that may take hours (hopefully even days) to happen at the most unexpected moments — the last one, I have just restarted, happened when I clicked on a hyperlink in Safari, the previous one, yesterday, when I was switching between one application to another, before that, I double click on an email in Apple Mail to open it… Both options, as much as they can stop it from happening, they do not allow for a full real life use. The main problem seems to be that Force Quit does not work at all, and even though the mouse will (at most times) continue moving and music will continue playing, no input or interaction will happen. This way, without the Force Quit window or even having access to open Activity Monitor, it becomes almost impossible to pinpoint the specific cause.

I was very hopeful that the updated Nvidia driver would solve it but I just froze again after just a few hours of installing it.

Nvidia does indeed has an updated version compared to MacOS's version. They nevertheless recommend installing also an updated CUBA driver that, after installed, informs that "Update required" at the same time it informs "No newer CUBA driver available".

Not sure this is a solution. It seems to go deeper into firmware or how the MacOS deals with video memory.
