turn off safari suggestions in ios 11

Please can Apple address this? I’ve turned off every setting relating to search suggestions for safari and cleared my history but it still appears. As another poster commented, the suggestions can be quite odd/ disturbing at times and would rather they didn’t appear. The ones below came up on a local newspaper article about a council enquiry...

I turned off predictive on keyboard as well in case that had anything to do with it! Plus the siri/spotlight search in safari. (Screenshot below) It’s mainly just irritating but also worrying that terms like the ones above could pop up when eg. my niece has stolen my iPad as she normally does. I even tried changing the search engine to others in case it was a google thing but again no luck.

On your screenshot, what’s shown on top is search suggestions. What’s shown below are your frequently visited sites. Both can be turned on and off in the settings I directed you to. There are other options there as well. Experiment with them until you get the layout that works best for you.

Isn't this under Settings > Safari > (Search) > Safari Suggestions?

I've disabled this and I'm hoping it will get rid of the suggestions above the keyboard. I don't know what kind of algorithm they're using, but I sometimes get some pretty disturbing suggestions. Besides, I don't like tapping suggestions above the keyboard anyway. Search engine suggestions are perfectly fine.

I can’t get it to shut off. I went to the Apple store today and they were clueless. They finally thought they fixed it - they were wrong. They thought it was a keyboard issue so god down the emoji icon- keyboard settings- predictive and make sure it is off. Mine is off and it is still giving me the suggestions. Ahhh

That is seriously disturbing! Did no one at Apple test this out?

Did you try disabling the setting I mentioned? It seems to have worked for me, although I can’t recall any previous examples to re-test it.

I also have predictive suggestions disabled in the keyboard settings. Maybe it’s a combination of the two?

Yeah, I take it back. My suggestions have just come back, as random and disturbing as before.

There doesn’t seem to be an obvious setting to disable this. The annoying thing is that the suggestions are too erratic to be useful, even if I wanted this feature switched on.

Oh boy, that is disturbing. I’ve got some pretty odd suggestions too but nothing that bad. I want it turned off. I don’t like the privacy implications here because it seems the page contents are being analyzed somehow and suggestions are being sent back to the keyboard to show suggestions. Have we consented to Safari sending back info to Apple on our browsing habits? Has anyone tried this in private mode? If this send info back in private mode, it is a real abuse of privacy.

This was driving crazy as well. Glad to see I wasn’t the only one.

For what it’s worth, I think the solution might be to disable Safari Suggestions in Safari

There is a toggle called Safari Suggestions. Seems To have helped so far

Did anybody manage to solve this? I turned off every possible setting, yet just a few moments ago I was on a website about pyeongchang and when I wanted to search for something else, safari suggested “Air Busan”

Hi Daniel - did you solve this? My husband & I have the same issue with all our Apple mobiles - you used to be able to toggle off all the search suggestion/preload top hit boxes in Safari Setting and it actually did what you asked it to do - now they're all toggled off but we get the suggestions etc just the same. It's been worse since the latest update (11.2.6)!

I found a way to turn it off (sort of), but I very much doubt anyone -myself included- will like it. Besides, it only works on iPads, not iPhones. Anyways, if you split the keyboard you'll never see those suggestions again. You may have to enable that option first, under settings > General > Keyboard. (The gesture to split the keyboard is intuitive, but still, a bit tricky - I find it easier with one finger from each hand, instead of trying to "pinch" the keyboard apart with your thumb and index.)
