System freezes since High Sierra

Hi,

since i upgraded to High Sierra i get random (every few houres) system freezes/slow downs. Everytime the mouse is still useable but the response needs quite a lot of time and sometimes there is no response at all. I had some freezes where the system recovers after 10 minutes and sometimes i had to do a hard reboot.

I thougt it might be an issue with the current release of High Sierra therefore i installed the 10.13.1 Beta, but the issue is still present.

I have no external drivers installed.

Has anyone an idea what i can do to track down what could cause such an issue?

I have this problem, too, on my Mac Pro (Late 2013): I installed High Sierra (upgraded from Sierra) on October 6th. Ever since then, here is what happens: I leave my Mac running at the end of the work day. I come back to my office the following morning and the computer is unresponsive to trackpad or keyboard wakeup. My only option is to restart the computer.

I have reset SMC. I have downloaded and reinstalled High Sierra as of October 11th. I have upgraded my external monitor card drivers (Blue Diamond) to High Sierra compatible drivers. The system is still locked up on most mornings. The only thing that has changed is that after resetting SMC the monitors actually wake upon response to touching the trackpad or keyboard. But, that doesn't matter, because the actual operating system is locked up.

On October 11th, I opened a ticket with Apple support and have provided their engineers with a crash dump diagnostics file.

This behavior has happened nearly every day since installing High Sierra on October 6th. Although, curiously, the computer was awake and ready for business for me the past two days (October 15th and 16th) without incident...and without a change on my part.

I have just heard back today (October 16, 2017) from my Apple support contact who has confirmed that:

  • Computers locking up is a known issue that is affecting many users who have upgraded to High Sierra.
  • As such, research will continue and it will be addressed in a forthcoming operating system update.

Technology. It's great...when it works. #ahem

After installing the latest update 10.13.2 the freezing disappeared only to return twice in the last 2 days. When I try to wake up my Mac Pro (late 2013), the screens appear and I can move the mouse. However, there is no response to the keyboard (Cmd+tab) or mouse clicks. Power rebooting is the only way to recover my system.

Same issue here, Mac Pro Late 2013 (High Sierra 10.13.1)

Still able to use mouse cursor, and I've noticed that tasks that are running such as file transfers seem to complete in the background (I hear the notification) but the screen is unresponsive. Constantly having to hard reset the computer.

I've wiped the computer several times over (I've been having issues for 18 months - this is just the latest! - taking me out of my AppleCare period not that it helped me at all). After the most recent wipe I haven't even bothered to put my files back on the computer, and have only installed the bare bones of the software I need.

I was thinking about rolling back to Sierra, or... trying out the 10.13.2. Kinda dreading it though, as have lost so much time over this.

Was wondering if we have anything in common that might not be playing ball with the OS. I'll list my setup/software, it does seem to be the OS, but maybe it will help.

LG M232 Via HDMI

Apollo Twin - Thunderbolt (Latest software)

Propellerhead Reason 10 (Latest update)

Anker USB 3 Hub - Apple Wired Keyboard, Nektar Impact GX61 (unplugged), Fender Bronco Amp USB (unplugged) iLOK (I deleted the software as I noticed another user had it experiencing crashes - didn't help)

Samsung & Toshiba USB External drives (not always connected)

Fender Fuse Software (this included silverlight - had the issue before and after this) Zwift

After my clean install a week or 2 ago the Mac seemed quite calm but I did get one or two crashes, since I've gradually started installing software I've been experiencing more and more. I've tried all the ports, various things plugged in and unplugged.

MBP 15 inch mid 2014; for me, it seems somehow linked to external monitor or some other display issue.

- the symptoms (everything frozen except mouse cursor, fans turn on, have to restart) often happens within a few minutes of disconnecting from or connecting to an external Apple Thunderbolt Display, which I do about once per day.

- also seems to happen near when I am dragging windows between screens.

- most recently I had an all-text pdf that rendered on the built in screen but not the external monitor: out of boredom I was dragging it back and forth between the two windows, and the machine froze. However, I have not been able to duplicate this.

I’ve used the same external monitor for two years and all of this is new with High Sierra.

Decided to move forward to the beta instead of going back which would take a lot of time.

Was clear for a few days then the same issue came back [Frozen screen, cursor still moving, then beachball then hard restart]

It's happened a couple of times with YouTube on full screen, however sometimes it doesn't, it also happens when not on YouTube so it is not consistent. I am wondering if it is to do with the external display (I've played around with a few ways of connecting it but none seem to help).

I've been logging several reports a day on the Apple Beta Software Program app. I don't know how the beta testing works but maybe if they get enough submissions regarding this problem they will be able to identify the cause.

Major identical problems on my Mac Mini (mid 2010) after 10.13.1. update. I had 1 yr old Time Machine backup so after saving files to external hard drive, while in Safe mode, I restored using Time Machine to before 10.13.1 and system stopped freezing but I lost lots of apps so I found 10.13.2 and installed; no problems whatsoever, system is operating as fast as it did before problems started. Next time, do not panic, Apple IT will work it out.

I'm glad to see its not just me. Still waiting for the fix, and yes I'm on 10.13.2. The crash seems to happen when using either Adobe LR, PS or FCPX for me, or when I've got FCPX rendering in the background, and open mail or Safari. Its a major hassle having to reboot and start again. C'mon Cook, get your team on it! Jobsy would be spinning in his grave if he could see what you're doing to Apple!

I agree. I thought mine was fixed after the Apple Care tech had me reinstall High Sierra, but the problem has continued. The only way I can keep the OS from freezing is if I shut my MacBook down completely after using and not put it in sleep mode at all.

I'm not sure how concerned anyone at Apple seems to be about this.

I’ve been having this same issue recently, except in my case not even the mouse responds. Occasionally, when some of the applications crash I see an error regarding a SIGABRT and SIGSEV which are usually related to hardware issues. I am a software developer and am not usually doing anything too demanding of the computer or running multiple monitors, but like was suggested this does sound like it may be related to the GPU drivers in the latest update. I’d be interested to know what models this is happening on. Mine is a 2015 Macbook Pro.

Anyone manage to fix this themselves?

Still having the same problem on Late 2013, Mac Pro. I wish I never bought this computer now. It will crash on average 3 times a day and I dread using it and losing work.

I signed up to the beta test of the new OS because frankly it can't be much worse. I'm logging several crash reports a day. I wonder if we all signed up to the beta test, there are 350+ people who seem to have the same problem according to the first entry on this post. So if we had that many people logging 1-3 (or however many crashes you get a day) then maybe Apple will take note, and take some action to fix this. I even get crashes before the previous crash log has been submitted!

I'm seriously considering selling the machine, but I'd need to be sure it was working first (and of course if it was working I'd want to keep it!). I also have a thunderbolt Audio Interface, so I don't know if I'd be able to use it any more, and potentially some Apple only software. Really don't want to go down this route, but its looking more likely.

I have had this issue since I opened the Mac Pro box and started the system. It appeared to be a conflict of hardware or drivers. After eliminating everything except the Mac Pro itself, I seem to have found a workaround.

From the Terminal run "caffeinate -isa" and leave the window open but out of the way.

I have not had any crashes or freezes since. If this is indeed a solid workaround it indicates the issue has to do with some piece of the system sleeping most likely involving the gnu.

My freezes would most often come when running some video and the screen saver coming on. It has however occurred when doing nothing more than scrolling down a Safari window.

Hope it works for y'all as well as it seems to be for me.
