High Sierra photo editing slow

I upgraded to High Sierra on a Mac Pro 2015. I notice Photo editing runs slow. Any edits that I make lag for a few seconds before showing up.

MacBook Pro, iOS 11.0.2

My Photos is at present working as it should!!! Here is the pain I went through to get this working:

  1. I backed up my drive to an external drive using Superduper! - This makes a bootable copy of my system in case something went wrong( I also back up to Time Machine and Backblaze but I wanted to be safe)
  2. I did a clean install of 10.13.3 High Sierra - which included the following steps
    1. Created a bootable installation USB drive for 10.13.3 High Sierra
    2. Booted system to the above USB drive
    3. Erased my hard drive using disk utilities on bootable USB
    4. Installed High Seirra
    5. During install, 1 migrated all users, data and settings EXCEPT applications from backup I made in step 1. This means I will have to install all 3rd party apps manually.
  3. Once Step 2 completed in total(about 7 hours later) I tried using Photos and it worked great! Yay!
  4. The next thing I did was install back my missing apps one by one. After each app install I would restart and check Photos. The apps that installed and DID NOT affect Photos performance are as follows:
    1. Office 2016
    2. Pages
    3. Numbers
    4. Keynote
    5. Backblaze
    6. Chrome
    7. Firefox
    8. Parallells
    9. iMovie
    10. Steam
  5. Dropbox however broke Photos. I installed Dropbox for Business, linked it back to my Dropbox folder, rebooted, logged back in and waited for a bit. Then I checked Photos and I was back to the lock up behavior described in my previous post Once I quit Dropbox and uninstalled it (threw it away out of the Applications folder) and restarted, Photos started working as it should.

I will keep checking Photos over the next week and post if it starts acting up again.

Hope that helps - Will send Apple feedback as well.

I agree 100%.

Were you able to download and install iPhotos even with High Sierra? If so, and it works, what version of iPhotos? Does it conflict at all with Photos? I might try that myself. I'm getting really frustrated having to move raw photos back and forth between my iMac (on High Sierra) and my MacBook (still on Sierra).

Since installing High Sierra, my Photos hasn’t been the same. I use Photos on my iMac in conjunction with iCloud as a mechanism to backup my Nikon RAW pics and share them with all of my other IOS devices, MacBooks & AppleTVs. While I am able to “import” into Photos - the background processes, uploading to iCloud, stall after an hour or so of initial sluggish progress. Speaking directly to Apple Support, we have launched in safe mode and toggle the iCloud setting in Photos off and on. The process restarts and shows some life, but still stalls and I stare at the CPU memory resources top out, and network traffic at a minimum. I am keeping Apple Support on the hook, hoping to find an expert on this app and supporting services. A couple of thousand down and 50,000plus to go... argh. Life before High Sierra - fond memories.

I'm experiencing this problem on the brand new Imac my employer just purchased for me to use at work. As my main job of editing many jpeg photos throughout the day, I am reduced to dread and frustration with using this newest version of Photos on High Sierra. The old iPhoto program I was using from 2009 was actually working better! The main tool I use and need is the retouching tool. After 5-10 retouches on the same picture it starts to become exceeding slow, where I have to wait 10 seconds or more to see the result, and then it will only then actually do the retouching half the time. Then, all the other editing features become equally as slow, and it continues to lag, practically unusably, until I can save and close, or force close, and then reopen. As frustrating as this this is, it's helpful to know it's a widespread issue. Does/Will it help to contact customer care? This is beyond frustrating and totally unacceptable for a new machine!!

Interesting suggestion, but I don't think it is GPU related. My 2011 iMac has an AMD Radeon HD 6770M GPU and my 2013 MacBook Air uses Intel HD Graphics 4000. Both computers have problems editing the same raw files, even with 10.13.4. Also, I can see massive processor use when trying to edit raw files. This does not seem to happen at the point when the image would be displayed, but while a tool or the image itself is loading. It is not clear from several discussions if the latest system update to 10.13.4 fixes the problem with folks who have problems with jpegs. It certainly does not fix my problems with raw files.
