High Sierra macOS freezing and stops

I upgrated to high Sierra and have a big problem since then. About 3-4 times a day in my worktime my MacBook Pro (i7, 256 SSD, 16 GB RAM), is lagging and freezing. I even can't move the mouse on the screen, only music is playing. I don't know what is the problem because i cant even make a report on that. This is a real problem, because I am working and this still happens. Maybe anyone have this problem too? What can I do, because untill upgrade everything worked perfectly fine.

Help please !!

  • Shut down your Mac.
  • Unplug from power supply. Leave it unplugged for 20 minutes or more. (I had always heard just a few minutes would drain but Apple Support advised me leave unplugged for longer.)
  • Unplug all your devices but your keyboard and mouse.
  • Zap your PRAM

1. Shut down your Mac.

2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.

3. Turn on the computer.

4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.

5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.

6. Release the keys.

Restart holding down Shift Option Command R.

You can release when you see the globe.

Open Disk Utility and select your Macintosh HD. Erase. This will delete all data on the drive. If you don't have a backup you might try running First Aid, but I suspect to fix you will need to erase. Select HFS+ Mac OS Extended Journaled.

Quit Disk Utility

Select to reinstall macOS. This will install the original version of OS X that came on your Mac. When it completes, you can boot into the new install then select to upgrade to either El Capitan, Sierra or High Sierra. I would manually move files back if you go back to High Sierra.

To clean install...

Download OS X 10.11 El Capitan

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT206886

Download Sierra

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208202

I might suggest you wait on upgrading to High Sierra until it matures a bit.

tl;dr

  • my machine crashes such that I can’t use mouse/keyboard/VNC to do anything
  • can still access remotely via SSH/SFTP
  • might be related to Apple Screen Sharing (VNC) remote access
  • when problem occurs, first Dock crashes, followed by other services crashing, followed by infinite repeat crashing of com.apple.preference.displays.MirrorDisplays

My experience is somewhat different:

  • My machine crashes to a blank screen (black with the screen backlight on)

sometimes with a mouse pointer that still correctly moves if I move the mouse.

  • I cannot get the machine to do anything with the physical mouse/keyboard

    restart/shutdown/logout hotkeys do nothing

  • I cannot access the machine via VNC
  • I can access the machine via SSH/SFTP, and from command line everything looks good, but I'm unable to kill/restart any process that actually recovers the current session

I can force a shutdown through SSH, though sometimes the machine doesn't successfully shutdown and I still have to do a hard boot with the physical power button

System info:

2013 Mac Pro

  • 12 core Intel Xeon
  • 64GB memory
  • 1TB SSD (APFS, reformatted right before OS install)
  • Fresh, clean install of macOS 10.13, since updated to 10.13.3
    • After install, manually copied only user documents from Time Machine backup,
    • not using migration assistant, so there’s absolutely no leftover junk from previous use of this machine
  • Connected devices
    • Thunderbolt Display
      • USB Apple keyboard connected to display
    • BT Apple Magic Mouse
  • Only a handful of applications installed
    • MS Office
    • Wolfram Mathematica
    • Parallels Desktop
    • Synology Drive (dropbox-like sync tool for Synology NAS)
    • Drobo Dashboard (for administering a Drobo NAS)
  • Note about another machine:
    • all the applications listed are also installed on my 2012 MBPr,
    • also running a clean install of macOS 10.13.3 on APFS SSD,
    • with many kernel extensions,
  • MBPr has NEVER experienced this problem.

That said, I have some system logs that hint at the problem. An excerpt from my system.log follows at the end of this post.

  • It starts immediately after a restart (after updating to macOS 10.13.3).
  • The only thing I had done since booting the machine was to login to the primary user account. I then logged into a second user account via Apple Screen Sharing, opened Apple Mail, and closed the connection.
  • Minutes later (at the top of the log output) the Dock crashed, followed by a series of other services crashing
  • From this point the computer has basically crashed.

I’m unable to do anything using the physical screen/mouse/keyboard or though screen sharing

  • For the next 50 minutes, the log shows repeated failures of com.apple.preference.displays.MirrorDisplays

Note: There is only one display on the machine

I assume this has something to do with Apple Screen Sharing being used to access a secondary user account using a virtual desktop/mouse/keyboard

  • At 11:41:04 I log in via SSH and initiate a shutdown from command line

This leads me to believe the behavior has something to do with Apple Screen Sharing. Unfortunately, this machine was specifically purchased for remote access, so not accessing it remotely is not an acceptable workaround.

I’ve also included output from EtreCheck, which doesn’t show anything helpful other than to indicate that this machine has very little software installed at which to point a finger.

The same. About once a day my Macbook Pro 15 Late 2013 just stops working. The cursor is spinning circle, but can't click on anything. Cannot start Activity Monitor or something. Once I tried to wait but after half an hour nothing happened. Need to push the power button and shut it down.

I have Parallels Desktop 11, but it happens even if no virtual machine is running and if Parallels does not run.

Please fix it, I need to work 😉

Oct 11, 2017 2:16 AM in response to sckeedoo

I'm noticing an awful lot of graphical glitches, particularly in Chrome, which I've never encountered before. Perhaps it's related to the switching between discrete and integrated graphics? It's a bit of a nightmare to use in work as I'm having to save documents every time I write a sentence or two to avoid losing them!

Same thing here. It can happen several times an hour. Most times, it recovers after part of a minute, but sometimes it never comes out of it and the only option is to force a shutdown. I have my Mac's clock displaying the seconds count, and even that freezes.

Like others here, I've tried many troubleshooting techniques, i.e. Safe Boot to clear caches, zapping PRAM, running Disk Utility, using 3rd party maintenance and malware-scanning apps (Onyx, MalwareBytes) - no joy.

Was hoping the Supplemental Update would bring relief, but no such luck.

same here:

High Sierra: MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) freezes every day.

since I've installed macOS 10.13 my macbook freezes at least one per day. It usually (but not only) happens when on heavy load situations like a lot of web-based apps opened (slack, spotify, etc) or when I do video conferencing (slack, skype etc).

I am experiencing the exact same problem as @sckeedoo described.

Also, every time my MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) freezes, I need to force shutdown it and the following login screen is displayed when I restart it:

Notice how a third of the login screen is black. This is really strange.

Looking forward to a fix.

I had this happen on my [iMac 27"5k 3TB fusion model] whenever I tried to open one of my files with a massive amount of video files where the settings were set to "Quicklook" ... pretty much froze the whole computer although I could move from app to app and move the mouse... it was the Finder that had the spinning beachball. I found if I changed to "List view" it kinda fixed it but I really need Quicklook in this folder.

Also, I find that if I use the zoom mode with the control key and mouse that it will eventually freeze the mac with the exact same " I could move from app to app and move the mouse" but that was all... needed a forced restart again.

I've never had a mac OS update that needed as many forced restarts as this one... that and the fact they haven't even added the new way to read massive image files for the fusion drive yet... sloppy IMO. I doubt Steve would have allowed this to hit the app store without that major aspect missing [outside of beta].

Also, Safari is buggy... not so much in the way it works but in the way it looks with items in the toolbar becoming blank [i.e. the icon inside disappears after a couple of hours]... again pretty sloppy.

Another thing is that Quicklook occasionally misses item pictures [see attached image] in the window but it is actually there if you hit the spacebar. I've even had it shimmer bright red in the background.

There are loads of other little niggles that make me conclude that this is the buggiest update I have ever experienced - and that's going back to OS 6, old school!User uploaded file

when I said it shimmered red I meant that all the background grey here would occasionally turn red and shimmer if I used the arrow keys on the keyboard.

Network Diagnostics have also disappeared from System preferences... really?

Not impressed Apple, not impressed at all.

My Mac is noticeably slower now with simple task like scrolling a webpage, so I spent some time trying to find a fix for this web driver mess on google.

I managed to bypass the installer's check so I could install the driver again, but it still would not enable it.

Turns out NVIDIA Web Driver always behave this way and NVIDIA generally releases a new version between 24 to 48 hours after Apple releases a new update.

Now I'm just waiting for the update to be online.

So if you rely on this driver right now and you installed the latest patch from Apple, you might want to pospone rebooting until the updated driver is available. (note that reboot is not required for the security patch to be effective, I just installed an update for another software that did require a reboot... Bad luck...).

Hope it helps.

Open Activity Monitor in Applications/Utilities. You'll need to keep this running in the background. If you Mac is frozen, you won't be able to view unless you can leave it where the window is visible.

While in the Activity Monitor, under View in the Menu bar, select All Processes.

Select the CPU column.

In this example, TextEdit was frozen but not other apps. I've seen com.apple.preferences.icloud.remoteservice not only take high CPU, but also take over 16GB of memory. My computer was wedged until the process was complete.

If you note the exact time, you can send a bug report to Apple and include the time in your report, it can help them track down the problem in your report.

Time Machine is not bootable. A clone is an exact copy of your drive and is bootable. Open System Preferences > Startup disk. You will not see Time Machine as an option to startup.

Time Machine does backup the files that contain your passwords, but it's not easily recovered from Time Machine backups. I suggest you look at the following password managers. Some come with free version but limited data that can be store. If a free option does not work out for you, I would recommend 1Password not only for price but for reliability and use.

There are certain items that must be in the Keychain app like email account passwords or you would have to enter every time your account connects. For sites where you log in with your browser, you can select to use the iCloud Keychain, but this only works in Safari and not other browsers.

Recently, Apple starting pushing High Sierra installs to users that have “Download newly available updates in the background” checked. More info here: http://tidbits.com/e/17633

Apple’s Software Update automatically downloads High Sierra in the background and then presents the notification offering just two choices: Install and Details.

If you don’t want to install, the only way to cancel is to click Details, which launches the App Store app and displays the High Sierra description, and then quit App Store.

To stop future auto downloads...

Go to System Preferences > App Store. Uncheck “Download newly available updates in the background”. This will keep the updater from downloading.

Hi Apple,

My 2012 MBPR (16GB RAM, 1TB flash, quad core) with just 1 video app is running at > 218 degrees F (103 degrees Celsius). I have stopped using Adobe Lightroom. I have stopped using Apple's own Photos application. I do some minor editing on the iPhone but my Nikon D700 DSLR photo processing is impossible.

I would hate to move to windows but I have a virtual machine running Windows (legit license) which runs faster on a Linux box using $200 in parts.

In case it helps anyone:

10.13.6 came and I excitedly installed it. The lags and stutters went away for a few hours and then came back just after a few hours of use. No particularly new application was in use when it came back - just the usual apps I generally use(d): browser, Outlook, PDF viewer Skim, etc.

As the UI stutters came back clearly I was frustrated again and tried the two following items: SMC Reset, which seemed to help somewhat but not fully/significantly. Thereafter I found and tried the solution I didn't think would help at all but actually did: Going to Accessibility within Settings and clicked to enable "Reduce Motion" and "Reduce transparency". I have been using the 3.1 GHz, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD 13" 2017 Macbook Pro for 5 days now, almost completely without the UI stutter and freeze problems. No other tweaks except these were made to help the situation.

These options are actually supposed to improve Accessibility for folks with some forms of physical disabilities - and these were necessary to actually make this high powered machine usable to me due to the machine's disability. There are quite a few reports of this helping other people, but I didn't think AAPL would do this poor a job with their OS engineering such that enabling these options might actually help. Yet, it did. The data speaks for itself.
