High Sierra macOS freezing and stops

Similar problem here -- MacBook Pro 10,1 (mid-2012), i7, 16Gb -- but happens with no media of any kind playing. The mouse cursor usually remains responsive in the sense that I can move it around, but there's no response to mouse clicks or keyboard input. Never saw this problem prior to the High Sierra upgrade.

I've also tried to log in from a remote machine via ssh to initiate a restart. I'm usually able to connect, but my session invariably hangs after the first command is issued (including `shutdown -r now`). Eventually had to do a hard restart.

I'm noticing an awful lot of graphical glitches, particularly in Chrome, which I've never encountered before. Perhaps it's related to the switching between discrete and integrated graphics? It's a bit of a nightmare to use in work as I'm having to save documents every time I write a sentence or two to avoid losing them!

Same thing here. It can happen several times an hour. Most times, it recovers after part of a minute, but sometimes it never comes out of it and the only option is to force a shutdown. I have my Mac's clock displaying the seconds count, and even that freezes.

Like others here, I've tried many troubleshooting techniques, i.e. Safe Boot to clear caches, zapping PRAM, running Disk Utility, using 3rd party maintenance and malware-scanning apps (Onyx, MalwareBytes) - no joy.

Was hoping the Supplemental Update would bring relief, but no such luck.

since I've installed macOS 10.13 my macbook freezes at least one per day. It usually (but not only) happens when on heavy load situations like a lot of web-based apps opened (slack, spotify, etc) or when I do video conferencing (slack, skype etc).

Mine does the same probably 10 or more times a day. Cannot see any trend in when it happens. Music keeps playing and when using Skype I was able to continue my conversation till finished but could not click on the hang up button. Every now and then I get a kernel panic screen too. Only solution is to do a hard reset. Sometimes after the restart the location of the some of app windows is forgotten (I work with 8 Desktops all specifically configured for different collections of apps and all in specific positions) so this wastes a lot of time to redo only to have to do it all again too afterwards.

Started happening to me right after I upgraded from Sierra.

Then I reinstalled macOS from a clean drive and it's happening again.

I suspect it is related to the nvidia GPU, it seems to happen to me most when I am plugged into an external monitor.

This issue is driving me nuts!

I have 2 variations: one is crazy flickering in any web browser (and I turned off video card switching) which sometimes can be fixed via closing the lid of the laptop; and freeze when everything stops (but music continues to play). Freeze unfroze one time, but usually it requires a shutdown.

I did a clean install from USB, by the way, wiped the disk and installed from scratch. Recent update didn't help.

I have MBP 15" early 2013.

I also have Macbook Air 13" (2011) with High Sierra and it's not affected at all.

I have a similar problem on Macbook Pro 10,1 ( 15 inch Retina, 16GB RAM, 2.6 GHz, Upgraded HDD 1TB). It hangs while I swipe from left to right between screens. Mostly system crashes when I left it unused (usually at nights). When I open in morning, all my open work is lost as I have to reboot. The screen appears to report the issue to Apple but it ain't got any messages.

I tried defrag, first aid, uninstalling unused apps, killing background processes etc. Nothing helped me.

Hope they will fix it soon.

I second that Andrew. I am primarily a Chrome user. I don't like the controls in Safari much and it just feels too limited. So I use Chrome. But for me when the computer starts to act weird it's when I'm using Chrome or a Chrome extension. I have been rebooting when it starts, before it gets too far gone. The thing that's killing me is that it can't save my itunes password in the accounts system so I have to re-enter it every time I reboot. Irritating as ****.

Thx! I suspect it is somehow effecting specific models of machines from 2012-2013. I can see is the discussion that it is not only about MBP but also iMac (but not MBA).

Well, saying it's DEFINITELY NOT something is not entirely a factual statement. It IS the case for me. What's also the case for me is that I also freeze a lot when using Photoshop (or any graphic-intensive Adobe program). It just now happened after already unplugging from my external monitor.

So this leads me to believe its to do with certain Graphics Cards and the handling of too many processes.

How High Sierra changed all that is a mystery. But **** if I'm not frustrated beyond all reason.

In another thread I posted that on slim evidence I decided not to run Safari at all, moving all my currently open pages to Chrome. It's now 30 hours without a crash (was having once or twice a day). Will post any change or progress here too.

I think we should concentrate on the similarities. That's the only way to deduce the cause of the problem, aside from obviously only affecting High Sierra.

Not everyone uses Adobe products, or has peripherals, or uses external displays, or even uses Chrome frequently, so we can pretty safely remove those from consideration as the cause. We can also pretty safely remove the cause as being an upgrade to High Sierra, as several people have said they've done clean installs.

So, similarities... Does everyone have Macs with NVidia graphics cards?

No Nvidia GPU here. My MBP/r has a Radeon GPU.

I'm having the pausing issue several times a day, and I also get the occasional screen freeze, with continued background processes, i.e. streaming music or Finder copies, requiring a forced shutdown / startup cycle to recover.

Hello guys.

I've been following this problem since the day after High Sierra became public: my iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012) crashes a couple times every day. Screen is frozen, audio works and same goes for the cursor. One time I was on a skype call, and it still worked! Even the video (from the caller side, mine was stuck of course)!

Also, I'm experiencing graphical glitches on Chrome, Discord, and Whatsapp.

I cannot see a common behaviour from my side when I get the freeze: sometimes I'm opening a video, some other i'm just chatting, maybe writing something.

I've installed a few hours ago the 10.13.1: so far no freeze, but I still have graphical glitches.
