High Sierra macOS freezing and stops

Happens to me one time in ten when I launch Diablo 3. Same thing, the music continues but everything else is frozen.

Not consistent in its behaviour.

I am forced to force reboot. After a fresh reboot it will always work fine after.

There seems to be some precursor that triggers it. Putting it to sleep possibly.

Have this exact same issue, on rMBP mind-2014. Have called the customer care, and they have no clue what is going on, they keep telling me the problem is now resolved. But I am too scared to update. 😟

I had to wipe my computer clean, and get back to El Capitan, and then on to Sierra. I am planning to skip the entire OS version if that is what it takes.

You are correct. I ran diagnostics and everything came out squeaky clean. That was before I came to this forum looking for advice. I went through the LaunchAgents and LaunchDaemon folders and there was nothing to remove. So no hope for me. I did file an Apple developer bug report with EtreCheck and TimingSnoop reports. I haven't heard back from Apple yet.

I am waiting to get a TB flash drive so I can backup and restore my boot partition after reformatting to the new file system; time capsule backup brings my system down to its knees. It seems like the dynamically formatted partitions are causing file system slowdowns. Lets see ...

For all who have Apple Developer licenses: you can file bug reports with EtreCheck and TimingSnoop. The latter tool was suggested by Apple. Other tools may be useful too. I haven't spent time analyzing the TimingSnoop but are there people who know what to do with it? Most of the information is cryptic.

My iMac (21.5 Mid 2011) had a catastrophic failure during the upgrade to High Sierra. I lost everything. I formatted my disk and did a clean High Sierra install. I have the same freezing issues, have done the NVRAM/PRAM resets, etc. Nothing helps - can't find any useful information in the logs. This is extremely frustrating.

I am experienced the same problem on a Mac Pro (Late 2013). The computer freezes multiple times a day. Sometimes right after startup. One common scenario is when I have Apple Music playing on iTunes, and then the computer freezes but the music will keep on playing. Cursor some times is still working. I have noticed that when I activate the screen saver with iCloud sharing albums the computer freezes soon after the screen saver comes on. I have been in contact with Apple support and have followed four different protocols, including reinstalling the operating system. After a few hours of normalcy, the computer goes back to freezing. I am kind of giving up on this and hope that Apple will fix this situation. Any other ideas?

Already did that. Does absolutely nothing. I also have very few 3rd party apps running.

Sometimes it crashes when I'm in the middle of Python development in PyCharm. Other times just opening Spotify. Other times just browsing Chrome.

This is more than likely an APFS issue since most users aren't having issues with Sierra.

Apple just posted 10.13.4 beta 5. Installing that now to see if that helps (I'm not holding my breath).

I have about 30 computers here with high sierra and I can't say I have the same issues. Most computers have office, adobe cc and an antivirus. I can't say I have the same problem as you.

Did you try formating clean?

I agree 100%. It is the operating system. In my office, iMac (reboots at least once a week 10.13.x). Mac Pro always reboots twice in a row and is stable for like a week. It was running 10.13 but I would need to reboot with Power button on freeze. Went back 10.12.x and at least it reboots itself on a freeze. It’s only purpose now is reduced to video transcoding since it is so unreliable as it is so unstable. Had both video and audio cards replaced. Sadly the Lenovo laptop (not my choice) is the most stable platform. WT? Really.

I also just upgraded to 10.13.6 and just selected "Reduce motion" and "Reduce transparency", opened the folder that usually exhibits freezing and BAM! The entire UI froze for 50 seconds (mouse movement and wheel froze, and mouse pad froze). I am morose. My Safari tab continued to play audio from CNN.

For what it is worth, I did not reboot after selecting those options and I did not reset my SMC yet. I wanted to see if just fiddling with the UI settings fixed it. I will try rebooting and/or resetting my SMC to see if that makes a difference.

same issue here. MacBook has delays on everything, sometimes freeze and I need force restart. I have MB PRO 2017 2.8ghz intel i7 16gb ram. My mac must go fast like a light speed. but it is not. I have latest update of high sierra. I didn't notice that problems two updates before. I have NOT any special software on the background. Even writing that topic, my writing is slow because MacBook is delaying. And I have everything turned off, every software.

check activity monitor you guys, maybe you can read something more in that

Same problem. I have tried everything: PRAM reset, SMC reset, hardware check, repair permission for graphic card drivers, reinstall, even antivirus check ... nothing helps.

Waking from sleep also seems to be pretty hit or miss, sometimes requiring a hard reset.

Does anyone know if Apple has acknowledged this issue and is working on a fix?
