High Sierra macOS freezing and stops

I upgrated to high Sierra and have a big problem since then. About 3-4 times a day in my worktime my MacBook Pro (i7, 256 SSD, 16 GB RAM), is lagging and freezing. I even can't move the mouse on the screen, only music is playing. I don't know what is the problem because i cant even make a report on that. This is a real problem, because I am working and this still happens. Maybe anyone have this problem too? What can I do, because untill upgrade everything worked perfectly fine.

Help please !!

I posted earlier, for reference i have a MacBook late 2013 retina 13 inch, only intel iris no nvidia. As stated previously this issue was around during the beta. With High sierra I had tried everything including clean installs via usb installer. Whenever I went back to sierra all was well again.

Today, after a time machine backup I formatted the drive back to hfs and did a internet recovery back to the stock os (mavericks) i then did a full download of high sierra and did an upgrade but used a terminal command to bypass the conversion to the apfs file system. I have been running now for approx 14hours and have not had any crashes. before i was having a crash probably every hour so this is a massive improvement 🙂

I am obviously missing out of the performance increases from using apfs (which I have never noticed) but at least i now appear to have a stable system and photos is working as intended with my iOS 11 devices

The update hasn't fixed my freezing problem either. In fact, if I leave a window open with a folder that has a large amount of media files in it when shut down my iMac the Finder will be guaranteed to have the spinning beach ball after restarting [I need to do a force restart through Activity Monitor each time to stop this.]

I'm convinced it's something to do with the fact High Sierra was introduced with the full knowledge of Apple knowing the aapl factor did not work [yet] with Fusion drives. A very amateur approach IMO. I will say again that this update should not have been made public until this pretty essential aspect worked with fusion drive iMacs.

Am very disappointed Apple.

Hi DJRobX,

Good to know, might try that eventually. The freezes during usage seems to appear more often for me on 10.13.1.

Regarding the freeze after waking or sleeping, the «good thing» is that it unfreeze after I unplug my secondary display (it immediatly freeze back if I plug back the screen) but at least I can save my work and reboot in a proper manner.

Still a productivity killer, but now I'm only loosing time, I'm not loosing progress on projects I was working on.

Cant speak for everyone else but feedback has been provided via the bug reporter. I also provided feedback via the built in feature during the public beta

with regards to holding back updating, I would normally agree. But apple sells themselves as an ecosystem with all devices being a coherent part. With updated api's and apps and features failure to update leaves the devices out of sync. Being unable to edit a full res photo taken on an iOS device using photos on 10.12 is one such example. Unfortunately we cannot roll back the iOS update to make all devices work together as before

Equally apple are pretty aggressive with there approach to getting people to upgrade. Constant nags, large banners front and centre of the App Store page. I don't think its unrealistic to assume that the OS would be fine to install

IMHO, all users need to be running the latest version of their installed macOS that has security updates. Currently, that's High Sierra, Sierra and El Capitan. Users running older versions of macOS like Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, Lion, Snow Leopard and older seriously need to upgrade their Macs.

However upgrading to the latest version depends on your software needs and your abilities to troubleshoot issues. Unless you are a more advanced user that can deal with issues, personally I would not advise users to install a .0 version.

Lastly, NEVER upgrade without both a Time Machine and Clone backup. If anything goes wrong, you need to be able to revert to the previous version.

We're all still discussing 2 DIFFERENT problems as if they were the same.

Problem 1) Lagging, freezing, only solved by rebooting.

Problem 2) Display pausing for 5 or 10 seconds, then resolving itself. NO REBOOT NECESSARY.

Since the problems are different, the solutions are also different. I'll start a new thread for those of us with Problem 2, since that seems to be less prevalent, and less invasive.

Hi,

I have a 2012 MacBook Air. Since I installed High Sierra, it freeze 3 to 6 times a day. First, I tried to reinstall high sierra. no changes. Then I've totaly erased the SSD, make a clean install and use my Time Capsule to put my docs back to my Mac. The problem has disappeared for 2 weeks (and I felt very happy) but today my MacBook had, once again, freezed !!!

I've called a friend, who's a genius in an AppleStore and said to me that he never has this problème before. I don't know what to do. If anyone has an idea...

I have a Mac Pro (early 2013 and a Apple cinema HD display ) and I had the same problem. I have contacted Apple and they were unable to solve the problem (PRAM and other manipulations). I have followed your advice and since then, 2 days, the problem has disappeared, but why ? . Apple will call me back on Monday and I am waiting to see if they have an explanation and/or another solution. For the moment I thank you...

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm a bit fearful of all the effort of a clean wipe all over again, but thinking if your method is successful, possibly those of us with issues are resulting from the upgrade to High Sierra, or install before 10.13.1. My reinstall was a bit before this update... but tempted considering I've had my system lock up numerous times over the past few weeks now. Please keep us updated if it continues to work for you.

This is the latest Web driver that I could find on nVidia website (it will update itself after installing).

From the release notes:

This driver update is for Mac Pro 5,1 (2010), Mac Pro 4,1 (2009) and Mac Pro 3,1 (2008) users.

BETA support is for iMac 14,2 / 14,3 (2013), iMac 13,1 / 13,2 (2012) and MacBook Pro 11,3 (2013), MacBook Pro 10,1 (2012), and MacBook Pro 9,1 (2012) users.

2014 Mac Book Pro, 15 in 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7 2.5 Ghz

I know I am still connected to the internet and it constantly shows me as such but mail and Safari lock up constantly since upgrading to HS 10.13.1 a couple of days ago. I am now restarting many many times a day and it does briefly come back every time. Even turning wifi off and then back on will do it sometimes.... not all the time but sometimes. No message, no error code. The diagnostics tells me there are no issues. All my other PC's work fine and my wifi signal is very strong and was never a problem before this upgrade. I am just a 65 year old layman and completely wiping clean my hard drive and re-installing as suggested is just a tad overwhelming to me. What are we to do?

Hi Guys,

Quite frustrated this morning this morning as after I installed the security fix for the root password (or lack thereof), the NVIDIA driver informed me that it reverted to OS X's default driver as my OS version was not supported!

What the **** ?

I had a perfect week without freezes of any kind. And now I just fear things are going to get mad again.

I'm really really upset (trying to stay polite).

This is getting very frustrating.
