High Sierra macOS freezing and stops

Regarding password restoration: Actually, the issue may have been the fact that I restored to a different machine (permission issue). I'm not interested in talking about passwords anymore. As stated this is a closed issue with me. Apple was unable to fix this problem and told me iCloud needed to be used to restore passwords.

My problem is a little different but I had no problems until after this recent update to my MacBook Pro 2012. After upload of High Sierra and restart of computer, the upgrade starts to download and gets about 75% complete then stops and freezes and the same thing happens after ever restart. What the heck is going on with Apple?

My 2012 MBPR (16GB RAM, 1TB flash, quad core) with just 1 video app is running at > 218 degrees F (103 degrees Celsius). I have stopped using Adobe Lightroom. I have stopped using Apple's own Photos application. I do some minor editing on the iPhone but my Nikon D700 DSLR photo processing is impossible.

I would hate to move to windows but I have a virtual machine running Windows (legit license) which runs faster on a Linux box using $200 in parts.

I completely earaesd and reinstalled using APFS and my mid 2012 MBP is simply useless. It has major response time for almost anything from log-in to switching apps to simply scrolling a web page. The fans are working as if I am rendering a Pixar movie. So yes, I am going to the 'Geniuses' at Apple tomorrow and request a workable machine.

I had enough with these issues and went to the Genius Bar for help, something I barley ever do. Short story, even the 'Genius' at Apple couldn't figure out what's going on and on top of it all the hardware testing software that tests the video drivers (VTS I think) was not even High Sierra compatible! So Apple recommended erasing my Mac and install Sierra just for running hardware tests! My Mid 2012 MBP run without a glitch for 5 hard long years and now pretty much useless.

Thanks for the swift reply. Reformat to what? Can I reformat to the new AFPS format or just keep Extended Journaled (whatever that means). Just not sure if Disk Utility can reformat to the new system (AFPS) when choosing 'Option' during startup.

Can you please give us a step by step set of instructions, please? It will be extremely helpful. I would hate to spend several more hours experimenting with this system. I know I am being overly cautious.

Oh dear, High Sierra is acting up a lot more this morning. It's the equivalent of Windows Vista for macOS. I really wish Apple had provided some reasonable (easy for me) means of going back to the previous operating system. As it stands, I'll probably have to hire someone to roll it back for me since I'm really just too busy. BTW - are a lot of folks running Mavericks? I got into Apple computers at the end of 2015 (and was blown away at how well OS X El Capitan ran compared to a struggling Windows 7).

Not sure if anyone has had this occur - but just this morning I was unable to click on files. The files were photos that I had resized a few a few seconds earlier - but then I could not click on the resized photos in Finder. A few other files seem afflicted with this problem as well. As I persistently clicked on the un-clickable files for about 1 to 2 minutes - the files suddenly became clickable again - after more than a full minute. Actually, it was much longer than a full minute. I recorded the event on video and the video was over 1 minute long - but I also had time to retrieve my cell phone to make a video. So High Sierra was stuck (again), for quite some time (they're catching up with Microsoft Windows level of sludge). Anyway, this was quite different from the normal cursor freezing several times a day and I'm wondering if anyone had this issue - not able to click on files in Finder.

Same here, a very miserable upgrade experience! Moose over hover does not work, I have to hold down right button to open anything that would normally be in a list for hover over. A LOT of freezing, etc. BIG FAILURE Apple!!! Late 2013 iMac 32GB ram, (fully loaded late '13 iMac).

Apologies for any non-techie lingo, but I got a MacBook Pro several years ago so I didn't have to know or care anything about the innards like I always had to do with my awful Windows laptop. Appalled to think I might have to wade into these things with the latest upgrade but I too am having awful problems with freezing and its impacting my ability to make money in my business!

Anyway, to the point: I'm astonished that older Apple's-own SSDs might not work with their own upgraded file system. Is there a list somewhere of what SSDs will and won't work? I've just Googled the compatibility issue but couldn't find anything.

I'm running a MacBook Pro 15-inch Retina late 2013 model, with APPLE SSD SM1024F installed.

Many thanks for any help you can give I just don't have any time, energy or desire to spend delving into my Mac...I just need it to work seamlessly like it has since I bought it! :-)

As well as kl_king who has also replied, I don't want to get into changing hardware. We just purchased this Mac Pro last year, although it is a Late 2013 model. I'm having several similar issues, but mostly locking up when using the finder, or anything that accesses files on the desktop or our server, such as attaching/downloading files to/from email.

So are you saying that High Sierra is rewriting the drives to be 'APFS' format, and that they were not originally? That I need a different, physical drive? I cannot just reformat this one?

I have exactly the same issue. Everything freeze and after a minute or so it recovers. Sometimes I force shutdown the system and when I turn it on again there is no option to report the crash. This issue starts to happen after the second update of High Sierra.

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! Issue not only didn't get better, it is actually a little worse! At this point, Apple is failing BIG time! I have a $4000 Mac that is not as good as a cheap windows machine at this point, it's just sad! I hope somebody at Apple comes up with a REAL fix soon.

It's been the Smoothest HighSierra install for me so far.

The only major issues I'm seeing have been that whether switching users or

logging in with only one user, it seem to take about 2 minutes to settle in before all my apps run smoothly.
