High Sierra macOS freezing and stops

I just bought a brand new MacBook pro 13-inch 2017 and it was running 10.13.3 and worked perfectly. I then installed 10.13.4 Beta, and now have this same problem. Have tried everything here with no luck and cannot get into a genius bar for a week!!

Hopefully there is a real fix coming soon.

I have the same issue, without having found the root cause. It seems a bit better with the latest update, but completly hung up again after starting Safari.

Problem description:

MacOS can quickly gets very slow after startup. Seems a bit better after latest update, but PC often hangs up and I need to restart. Happened again just now after starting Safari.

...as my 2012 Mac has a 3TB fusion drive

Currently, there is no option to convert a fusion drive to APFS.

I removed fusion (unlinked drives) and now use the SSD drive to install High Sierra as APFS but keep Documents, Downloads, Movies, Music, Pictures on my 1TB HHD drive. I removed the default folders from the sidebar and replaced with the folders on the HHD.

The only data on the SSD is Applications, Desktop and my User's Library. I keep very little data on my Desktop.

I thought I was replying to the OP.

Reading through this thread, it's clearly several different problems that are occurring for different reasons. E.g., I don't have a fusion drive, so the optimization issues you suspect wouldn't apply to my situation.

I just put it hear because this thread seems to get a lot of traffic, so I thought my particular specifics might help someone reason about the problem.

My case is a head scratcher, since I'm already on a fresh install on a reformatted drive with almost no extra software installed. It's basically macOS and nothing more, so a problem as bad as what I'm experiencing seems like it would have been discovered before the release of macOS 10.13, and especially now that we're at the third major update I can't believe it's still happening.

I just opened the Disk Utility on my late 21013 MacBook Pro 13" Retina, with SSD- it says at the top APFS Volume

So- perhaps it isn't the file system that causing the freeze? Mine has been doing it too, just not sure if it was 10.13.1 or 2.

Same issue for me. Spinning beach ball of death several times a day. Slow awakening from sleep. Eventually rights itself but very annoying. Often when I switch between apps. Office 2016 apps also very slow/fails load and hangs, even after recent Microsoft Autoupdates and Apple Store OS X update.

iMac mid-2011 21.5". No peripherals except Apple mouse and keyboard. WiFi.

Happened right after High Sierra update from El Capitan. Worked find before. Hardware diagnostic fine.

Well in the meantime experience showed that the issue is really not an WD issue. At least not only. Sorry for that. Debugging such issues is not easy. It is effectively more generally when seval applications a running in parallel such as mail and safari, or lightrooom and the time machine, etc. Today I had to reboot alread 10 times And I really do have enough cpu, memory (32 GB), disk, network bandwidth available. Its a really massive pain.

So yes APPLE. Could you give us at least some indication indicating that your are acknowledging the issue and searching for a solution, even if you don‘t have it yet? I understand this might not be an easy one to solve.

yup, i'm having this issue/problem as well. 2012 MBP Retina, I7 4.2ghz, 16Gb Ram, 768SSD, apfs encrypted ... prior to high sierra, absolutely NO FREEZING issues ... under 10.13.3 (or .x), it'll freeze at least 1 time per day ... mouse/pad does wake the display on movement, but keyboard is unresponsive, trying to click on anything is unresponsive, and trying to remote desktop into it (to shut it down) its unresponsive ... hard cycle down is the only resolution.

chkdisk/nvram/usual suspects all performed. still, occasional freezes happening.

I'm new to reading the forum, and I agree that Apple needs to acknowledge the problem(s). But- is there no one at Apple monitoring this so they can take action, or is this a disconnected bubble?

I updated to 10.13.3 yesterday- so I'll see what happens. Mine only froze once every few days- but very annoying.

The download was very strange- it said it was updating for hours- if I hit f3, the screens would show in the background.
I finally said 'here goes...' and did a hard shut down. It came back up running as normal and does have the .3 v

Now if I can just figure out where the disable file sharing is- not in Preferences as it says online. New topic.

Submitted bug report and still having freeze issue on Macbook Pro 2017 (i7, 16GB RAM). No response on bug report, but I've uploaded a few sysdiagnose files to the same report and I'm wondering if I should just back up all my crucial stuff and start from scratch now that update is due. I will mention that I didn't start with a fresh install. I opted to use migration tool since it's a work laptop and I wanted to keep my files was lazy. I thought that could have been the issue, but now realizing that it may not make much of a difference. I am unable to force close apps because my escape key is on the taskbar, and the taskbar is unresponsive. Though I'm not sure that it would make a difference. I'm ready to go back to my old 2015 Mac, as having a laptop freeze during a Webex is becoming an issue that's disrupting my team. I usually have a bunch of windows open, but I did on my 2015 Macbook, too, and didn't have these persistent hanging/freezing issues. Hope this gets fixed. It's frustrating as all get up.

Well, spoke too soon- last night during shut down, Safari would not close- had to do a forced one using the menu to get Safari closed- at least it worked- other times there was no response at all.

Apple- please get on this issue- it could kill sales- as a user of your products and as an investor, this is Serious-

Same here (iMac 21.5in late 2012, 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5, 16 Gb Ram, 1 Tb Fusion Drive, High Sierra 10.13.3). It always seems to freeze for a few minutes just before Time Machine starts a backup... Very annoying when I am working on a project. Any feedback from Apple about the cause and an ETA on the fix?

I'm sorry, I was mistaken, the problem is still present in 10.13.4 beta 4. Currently, the frequency has just considerably decreased from a crash every hour to one every 4-8h. The computer does wake reliably after sleep, though (tested about 30x so far).

After considerable testing, I cannot in any way link applications and crashes or even computer usage and crashes. It can happen during light terminal work or heavy lifting with lots of disk and cpu activity in Ableton Live or during a lengthy compile run using gcc.
