Problems adding a new contact since upgrading to high Sierra?

Now when I go to add a new contact in the "contact" app on my Mac (High Sierra os), while I am typing in the information it will all of a sudden refresh with the contact information that is next in line. Very odd. I use gmail to store my contacts (via the Apple Contacts App). Has anyone else seen this issue? Any resolution? Or a software bug?

MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2011), macOS Sierra (10.12)

I spoke with a senior advisor at Apple about this bug yesterday who told me that it's a known issue and they are working on a fix to be rolled out in a future update but who knows when that will be so here are a couple workarounds I came up with in the meantime:

Workaround #1 (use the Google web interface when adding new Contacts)

Workaround #2 (using the Contacts App):

  1. Start a new Contact but don’t enter anything besides the first name and then wait a few seconds until the undesirable buggy behavior happens (the card goes blank and a new “no name” card appears at the bottom of your list of Contacts).
  2. Locate the new “no name” contact and enter the info you started entering in step 1. Fill out the card entirely and it should stick and sync.

Hope this helps someone else for now…

Thanks Jeremy. Sorry, it took me a while to complete all steps. The issue is exactly as you describe it. With one added piece of information. When the "refresh" happens and the next contact in the list shows up in the editing window, if I hit "done" and go to the bottom there is a "no name" contact there.

Problem happened after reboot.

Problem happened in safe mode.

Problem happened in a test user account (that I then connected to Google for my contacts).

Any other ideas?

We appreciate your coming back to us with your questions, amg1957. We'll be glad to answer them.

Whenever you're installing or reinstalling any device's operating system, it's always a good idea to back up your information. If you don't have any problems, reinstalling the macOS shouldn't delete our personal information.

Once you've reinstalled macOS High Sierra, you should see how the Contacts application responds before proceeding.

Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac -- If you find that you need to restore your Time Machine backup because your personal information was lost, these are the steps. Be sure to review the entire article before proceeding.

Let us know if we can be of further help.

Cheers!

Reinstalled macOS from the recovery screen. Same issue with the contacts. Since the issue wasn't there with Sierra and is only there now with High Sierra, I have to think it is something in High Sierra, but I am surprised a ton of folks aren't complaining about it.

Any other ideas? Apple was terrible on the case and I never got a call back. I guess I can try them again.

Same issue with me. It's already been the second month since the problem was announced. No sign of anybody's care. Clear bug in sync algorithm with Google service which showed up right after High Sierra UPD. It seems like the app tries to solve the conflict between local and cloud data during the entering a new contact and terminates the session because of code error. I suspect the renewed security policy where the process probably can't get enough rights to overwrite a cloud data and resets.

Apple, please don't ignore it! Bad coding is a sign of limited time, bad responce is a sign of no future.

I have the same problem.

Used to have it on my 13" Retina MBP running High Sierra. Last month I bought a 12" MacBook, set it up as a clean, new Mac (no import or anything of the sort), and the issue reappeared as soon as I upgraded it to High Sierra.

I too am using Google as my contacts provider. Installing the latest updates didn't work either.

Quite frankly this kind of bug is really surprising coming from Apple...

Apple feuds with Google the way they do with Microsoft. There have long been silly and annoying incompatbilities like this one. Apple will say the problem does not exist, or that it is the other company’s fault. Eventually, they fix the bug, quietly.

In fairness, the way G Suite (and regular Google) handles contacts is really lame, or I would just bypass Apple Contacts altogether.

Don’t bother doing the clean install. To trouble shoot this originally Apple had me do a separate instance of MacOS on my hard drive as well reinstall MacOS and the problem still persisted. It was after all that trouble shooting that they sent it to the “Apple Engineers”. And it has been with them for over a month with no answer. With so many folks having the issue since High Sierra, I am assuming it is a bug introduced with High Sierra that they are hopefully working on.

Yes, but like I said I have so many, I rarely do it... I just rather DOWNLOAD & EDIT in google, and use that download as my new contacts... Both suck, no one has a nice working contacts manager but that's working for me... I have emailed myself a copy for backup and delete old ones as they come along leaving about 8 in the waits just in case theres an issue.

Yes, it will, BUT IT is S_L_O_W as watching grass grow for all my contacts.

I have seen it very quick when I have had to build my contacts lists up by hand because of a bad OS update that corrupted below the system level files... now I have a backup of the last GOOD working copy of my drive... and if I'm starting to get problems once and awhile - I do the off then reboot then back on jaz with iCloud and google if required. It works better going from Google to my phone - loads in a very short time, quicker than the laptop.

Also, I was having a lot of troubles long time ago when they first came out with PINNED Tabs - I unpinned them and it works better since then... now I'm very careful what I pin.

Update: on my other machine (Mac Mini, also running 10.13.2) I *do* see that "Default Account" preferences item. The Apple Help says "If you use multiple accounts in Contacts, choose the one where you want to add new contacts by default." The Mac Mini has four different accounts, although only one is "active." I think the Macbook Air might have only one account, which is why that item does not appear.
