Character Accent Menu not working in High Sierra?

The character accent menu worked for me throughout the developer beta of High Sierra but has stopped working in the released version.

I've seen other reports about this around the net, but no solutions that worked for me.

Anyone? I do a lot of work with classical music and the ability to type diacritics quickly is important to me.

Thanks in advance,

Stu

I've spent some time on this trying all the suggested ways: add French or Spanish input keyboard, setting keyRepeat to OFF, etc etc.

what did it for me(I fixed this on my machine, and a co worker that brought this to my attention) was "defaults write NSGlobalDomain ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool true" followed by a power cycle(I didn't try restart, I went the safer route and tried shut down instead).

My key repeat is set to one tick before "Fast" and my delay until repeat is set to 3 ticks after "Long"(I believe these our default) and only have US as my input source keyboard (not US -International).

Again, it was only after setting the flag in terminal for NSGlobalDomain ApplePressAndHoldEnabled followed by a power cycle did this get fixed consistently.

hopefully this helps others

Thanks, leroydouglas.

OS version version is High Sierra 17A365

Sure enough, the character accent menu works with the guest account, so it is something about my environment.

The repeat slider is off.

I tried removing all my login items as well as everything in ~/Library/LaunchAgents and ~/Library/LaunchDaemons. I know that this worked until sometime recently, so I also tried deleting any programs I could recall adding in the last couple of weeks. Rebooted after each change. No joy.

I tried multiple accounts and don't have anti virus.

Couldn't attempt safe mode because I was working remotely and we have FileVault and firmware passwords set and if I reboot remotely, I lose wifi until an authorized user logs in.

On a side note, about 4 hours later, I got an email saying it was now working. Hadn't touched it since I sent the message but it suddenly started working.

I have several accounts, and sometimes after a restart I inadvertently log on with my non-Admin account. The disappearing accent menu sometimes happens even if I've been in my Admin account for more than a day or two. My fix has been to log out (even if it's my Admin account), then when the log on screen appears click on the icon for the Admin account. If all else fails, a restart or even cold reboot (in my Admin account) always works for me.
