iOS11 notifications disappearing from lock screen

Hi,

I’m using an iPhone 8 running iOS 11.0.2 and I’m finding that text message notifications are disappearing from my lock screen. For example, I received a message at 4.45pm and it appears on my lock screen, however if I don’t open it and leave it to deal with later, it has disappeared from my lock screen (phone has not been unlocked since). It is also not showing in my notification centre. Has anyone else found this or does anyone know a fix for it?

Thanks

I don't believe this is the case here. Originally this was my thought as well, and I went through several troubleshooting steps to determine the issues. I have almost all notifications turned off, except for messages, and mail (the ones I notice the issue on). I don't use live wallpapers, I have all motions turned off, and I don't use night shift or anything else that affects the lock screen. I even tried turning off my apple watch completely, as well as control centre access from the lock screen. Finally, I did a complete factory reset of my phone, did NOT restore from back-up, and it was still happening with only default apple apps installed. None of these steps solved the issue.

The ONLY thing that has fixed it for me is turning off "show in history". This leads me to believe there is a bug with notifications being stored in history which causes them to disappear from the lock screen after a period of time.

I'm having this issue as well. Has nothing to do with Temporary or Persistent notifications. And I haven't found any permanent or temporary fixes for this. I don't think it happens with all apps, but mainly my Messages app... So any text that I get only stays on the lock screen for probably 10 seconds or less and then disappears. And I don't mean, disappears as in the screen goes dark, I mean literally goes away and I've noticed I've missed a lot more texts lately because if I'm not near my phone, I would typically look at the lock screen later on to see if I missed any messages... but now I have to open it all the way up and check from the app... Really inconvenient... I'm surprised they didn't have this fixed with the new patch that came out like two days ago...

Yes, I guess I could have been more clear (busy times…) – of course that's expected behavior that when I read the messages on my computer (i.e. clicked the conversation in the Messages app on my Mac) they would dissapear from the lock-screen on my iPhone.

But they sure did stay on the lock-screen for about 10 minutes before I went to my Mac and read the messages there. I do have have everything checked in Settings > Notifications > Messages so for me it doesn't seem to matter that "Show in History” is off. May I ask how your ”Options” (at the bottom of the Messages Notification settings) are set? I have ”Show Previews: Always (Default)” and ”Repeat Alerts: Once”.

How long does it take for the messages on the lock-screen on your phone to disappear?

I have the same options - show previews always, and repeat alerts once.

I don't know how long it takes for them to disappear - during the day it's not so much of a problem, because I tend to check my phone as alerts come in. It's only at night, or when I've been away from my phone for a while, that I notice the problem. My lock screen will show nothing, and then later I will unlock my phone for some other reason and notice all of these missed notifications.

So unfortunately I've never "caught it in the act".

For me it happens only when text messages are received while my phone is shut off. When I turn my phone back on the red notification dot shows how many messages were received while it was shut off. Before I even have a chance to touch the message icon the red dot vanishes and any new messages go with it. I’ve experimented with both iPhone users and android users and it’s always the same. I have to leave my phone on 24/7 if I don’t want to miss messages. I’d like to shut it off and be device free sometimes.

Same here. This all started with iOS 11. I lose the notifications and the messages they represented. I’ve never been able to retrieve any of them. It only happens if I shut my phone off. Conversely, I can never get rid of the missed call notification. That hangs on for days and the only way to remove it is to shut there phone off. Such irony and aggravation!

One more insight on this from my experience. About a half hour ago, I received two text messages from my wife that didn’t show notifications on the lock screen. I replied to her text and got another reply from her a few minutes later that DID show the notification message on the lock screen. I‘ve been wondering if this issue was related to specific people, but this clearly shows that’s not the case. The problem happened - and didn’t happen - for texts received from the same person within 30-45 minutes.

I’ve had this problem since October, 2017 and have spoken to Apple support numerous times. I’ve had varied responses from them including a promise that it will be fixed with the next iOS upgrade and at the other end of the spectrum they tell me it’s a very rare issue. Neither of these is true as anyone in this discussion group will tell you. We all hope for resolution soon but now Apple doesn’t seem to want to even acknowledge the problem exists. As much as I love Apple products, my next upgrade will likely be an Android unless Apple miraculously fixes this problem in the near future. I wish you success and If you are able to find a fix for this please let us know.

Our problem is not addressed in this update "

"Messages in iCloud, which again showed up during the 11.3 beta phase, is also included in 11.4. Now, messages will be completely synced across all devices tied to an iCloud account. Previously, when a new device was set up, no history would be included (unless restoring from a backup) and deleted messages were only deleted on a single device.

Now, any action will apply to all iPhones, iPads, or Macs. It is beneficial for legacy conversations and keeping everything in check.

I recently upgraded to OS 12, and thought I was seeing this behavior. Now it appears to have been ‘pilot error’. Under OS 10, using my iPhone 5, I would pick up the phone, and activate the screen with the home button. With OS 12 on an SE, I have ScreenAvtivate with Motion. If I go ahead and push home out of habit, the lock screen comes up, flushing notifications. If I do nothing, the screen activates and all notes are there for review. When/if I push home, they are dismissed, and the lock screen shows up.
