iOS11 notifications disappearing from lock screen

Hi,

I’m using an iPhone 8 running iOS 11.0.2 and I’m finding that text message notifications are disappearing from my lock screen. For example, I received a message at 4.45pm and it appears on my lock screen, however if I don’t open it and leave it to deal with later, it has disappeared from my lock screen (phone has not been unlocked since). It is also not showing in my notification centre. Has anyone else found this or does anyone know a fix for it?

Thanks

There are two types of notifications: Temporary and Persistent.

You can select which ones you want in Settings > Notifications.

If still an issue, perform a Restart.

Ironically, this just happened to me again now. I received a text message from a friend for whom I normally have no problems with notifications disappearing (at least, not that I can recall). At 11:26 local time, he sent me a text message - heard my phone buzz, but no notification message appeared on the lock screen. At 11:40, I unlocked the phone to check what happened. Messages badge app showed 1 new unread message. No notification message in my Notification History either. Also did a quick check of my MacBook Air and my iPad Pro, but neither device appeared to show receipt of the message yet. Just wanted to rule out the possibility that it somehow registered on one of those two devices. Both were locked at the time I received the message.

Anything else?

And obviously my idea regarding the audio messages expiration time made no difference - so I set that back to After 2 Minutes.

Same here. This all started with iOS 11. I lose the notifications and the messages they represented. I’ve never been able to retrieve any of them. It only happens if I shut my phone off. Conversely, I can never get rid of the missed call notification. That hangs on for days and the only way to remove it is to shut there phone off. Such irony and aggravation!

Temporary/Persistent settings refer to banner notifications, not lock screen notifications.

Apple should *not* recommend this as a solution. I'm also experiencing the same behavior on my iPhone X, iOS 11.2.6. I get the badge notifications, but notifications inconsistently disappear from the lock screen or are simply not displayed.

- DND is turned off

- DND is not scheduled to turn on

- DND while driving is turned off

- Notifications > Show Previews is set to Always

- Notifications > *application* > Show on Lock Screen is turned on

- Notifications > *application* > Show Previews is set to When Unlocked

This has happened to me frequently enough to believe there is definitely an issue with notifications not appearing on the lock screen when they should. It's not something I've been able to consistently reproduce.

Then I guess the last thing to try (if you haven't done so already) is to backup and restore the phone and then set it up as a new device and see if the problem persists (can always restore from the backup if that doesn't help). I know it's a bit of a hassle, but just to isolate if it's something with Apple's service side of things or if it's something on your device.

Or maybe people here have tried it already?

That makes it sound like it's a backend problem somewhere but what do I know… I haven't seen the problem and I use Messages (and other text services) with one iPhone, one iPad and two Macs. Wonder why it's only happening for some.

@JordanBones

I guess you should be able to do something like that once Messages are stored in iCloud. The recently released iOS 11.4 beta seems to suggest it's coming when iOS 11.4 is done being in beta and released to the public.

One more insight on this from my experience. About a half hour ago, I received two text messages from my wife that didn’t show notifications on the lock screen. I replied to her text and got another reply from her a few minutes later that DID show the notification message on the lock screen. I‘ve been wondering if this issue was related to specific people, but this clearly shows that’s not the case. The problem happened - and didn’t happen - for texts received from the same person within 30-45 minutes.

This did not fix it.I am still having the issues after updates, 2 hours in the Apple Store & 4 calls at home this week & a complete restore to factory setting. For me, it is mostly texts from Android & if the phone has been turned off. Once I turn it on I may get a notification & once unlocked I can see that there are 1 or more messages but even that disappears in a second. I open up messages & nothing is there. Every time I get a call from Apple support they are like this is the first time they have heard of it!

Just spent 52 minutes on the phone & the rep is going to get back to me on Friday. He was very patient & seemed to be trying his best as I had been in the store this week for 2 hours & on the phone w/ them 3 other times. We have tried a number of things & I already did a restore & he did say we may have to do it again but maybe don't follow that up w/ a back up from iCloud...I will keep folks posted. I might add that more folks should sched a time w/ support ( they are very good about calling right on time ..maybe just a few minutes after sched time) & then they will be more aware of the issue...( I sched on line thru Apple.com)
