iOS11 notifications disappearing from lock screen

Hi,

I’m using an iPhone 8 running iOS 11.0.2 and I’m finding that text message notifications are disappearing from my lock screen. For example, I received a message at 4.45pm and it appears on my lock screen, however if I don’t open it and leave it to deal with later, it has disappeared from my lock screen (phone has not been unlocked since). It is also not showing in my notification centre. Has anyone else found this or does anyone know a fix for it?

Thanks

I don't believe this is the case here. Originally this was my thought as well, and I went through several troubleshooting steps to determine the issues. I have almost all notifications turned off, except for messages, and mail (the ones I notice the issue on). I don't use live wallpapers, I have all motions turned off, and I don't use night shift or anything else that affects the lock screen. I even tried turning off my apple watch completely, as well as control centre access from the lock screen. Finally, I did a complete factory reset of my phone, did NOT restore from back-up, and it was still happening with only default apple apps installed. None of these steps solved the issue.

The ONLY thing that has fixed it for me is turning off "show in history". This leads me to believe there is a bug with notifications being stored in history which causes them to disappear from the lock screen after a period of time.

I’ve had this issue too for months!!! Got a replacement phone and talked for many many hours with support over this. I thought I was crazy.

Anyone else have these issues too?

1) Phone calls don’t always come through? It rings on their end but you don’t always get them? I’ll get the voicemail but that’s it. No idea how often this happens. I figured it was a notification related problem.

2) Sometimes app notifications just disappear immediately on the lock screen even if I’m not plugged in.

So far I’ve found nothing works. Whatever I do, after having the phone off, when I turn it back on, if messages have arrived while it was off they appear on the lock screen but when I enter my code and go to messages I can watch the red dot notification vanish right before my eyes and the messages vanish too. I’ve tried several factory resets and every variation of settings combinations I can think of and nothing works. I’ve spoken to Apple techs several times and they just say the same thing; back up the phone in iTunes and reset it. It does nothing except waste my time and exacerbate my level of frustration. I had hoped the iOS upgrade of 11.2.5 would contain a fix but it doesn’t.

Have been experiencing this identical problem and thought I was crazy. I’m even finding app badge notifications disappearing from apps like Kik. They’re there one day and completely gone the next. Both of these issues just happened to me again within the last 24 hours. I probably experiencing them 2-3 times per week at a minimum. I’ve also felt my phone buzz notifying me of a text message arrival. When I look at the lock screen, no notification. When I unlock the phone and look at my Measages app, there’s the new message. So frustrating. Thanks for reporting this! Obviously, a lot of other people are also experiencing it.

Having the same issue

Messages will disappear in a matter of seconds to a few minutes

Worse yet, voicemail notifications from earlier will keep reappearing at random on the lock screen even after having gone into the phone and opened apps

When I’m at work I can’t listen to the voicemails, I have to listen to them on break or after work

But when these notifications keep reappearing, it’s vdry annoying

I optimistically downloaded the most recent iOS 11.2.6 in the hopes that Apple might have corrected this issue. Sadly it remains. Turned my phone off last night, back on this morning and after unlocking noted the 4 in the red notification dot for messages and within two seconds the red dot vanished as did the 4 new messages, unread and unidentified. It’s so annoying. I have no iidea who had messaged me during the night. I’m due for an upgrade and now I have to seriously consider other phones. I’ve been an Apple user for a long time but sadly Apple does not appear to appreciate loyalty. I’ve lost count of how many hours I’ve spent on the phone with Apple support since last October (2017) all to no avail. I will keep checking here to see if anyone finds resolution to this issue.

This apple recommended answer appears to be wrong. First, Changing temporary to persistent is not a complete solution (if it worked) because people don't want the notifications to be persistent when the phone is unlocked. Second, notifications never worked this way before as far as I'm aware, so pointing out the two types of notifications is irrelevant if Apple changed their meaning. Finally, people have reported that this doesn't even solve the problem.

I agree. I had intended to upgrade to an iPhone 8 Plus or even an iPhone X but I’m very reluctant to put any more money into a company that places so little value in its clients that this type of problem continue to negatively impact so many. The customer service and support from Apple has been non existent. After the first few attempts by their technicians to “walk me through” various time wasting fixes which I had already tried on my own, they just gave up and kept feeding me the party line that the permanent “fix” was in the next iOS update, then the next and the next ad nauseum. It never happened. I thought I’d found a fix by turning off Wifi before shutting down my phone and it seemed to work on two occasions then it was back to normal and has never worked again. I’m so discouraged. I love my iPhone 6 and my iPad Pro but if Apple doesn’t fix this issue, come uograde time, I will be shopping elsewhere. If anyone comes up with a fix for this please, please share. Cheers everyone.

I feel you. A friend and I were just discussing this at coffee this week. We both feel like something has fundamentally changed in the past few years with Apple. Poor product decisions that don’t feel well thought out, fewer compelling reasons for iterative upgrades, scary security “discoveries” after OS/iOS updates, strange issues that suddenly crop up immediately after new product releases, poor attention to needed fixes, support that doesn’t feel genuine - the list goes on. For the first time ever, my friend and I are both seriously weighing our options in this next upgrade cycle. There used to be so much to love about Apple, their products and their support. We agreed that instead, we’re sadly just feeling more and more “meh.”

Interesting how this issue manifests itself in different ways. My messages all come through fine and remain in phone waiting to be read as long as I never turn my phone off. After it’s been shut off at night and I turn it on in the morning I might have several notifications showing and I can even read parts of them on the lock screen but as soon as I unlock the screen I can watch the red notification dot vanish before my eyes and of course the messages vanish too. I have to hope that whoever sent them will either send them again or at least ask why I didn’t acknowledge or reply to them. But before I realized the problem I had missed some pretty important messages which created some difficulties. I’m eligible for an upgrade with my service provider and keep hoping this will get fixed before I decide to take the plunge and try another type of phone.

Isn't that expected behavior – that the notification goes away from the lock-screen if you shut down and turn on the phone? I mean one has to enter the pass code (i.e. log in) to the phone after starting it up after a shut down and unlocking takes away items on the lock-screen. Or am I wrong?

I just tried and that's what happened to me. What I didn't expect was that the message (after the restarting the phone) would also be gone from the history (”Earlier Today”) seen when swiping from the middle of the screen and up when the phone is awake, but locked. It should be there until it has been read somewhere since I have ”Show in History” checked in Message Notification settings, right?

Normally after my phone has been shut off and then switched on the red notification dot is there indicating the number of messages I’ve received and sometimes I can even see part of the message on the lock screen. When I unlock the screen the red dot goes away before I touch it and before I see any messages and then when I do touch the message icon the new messages are completely gone. It is extremely frustrating to know that people may have sent me messages during the night or while my phone was shut off for whatever reason and I’ll never know what they said or who they were from even.
