ios 11 screen mirroring/airplay trouble

Ever since I downloaded the ios 11, the screen mirroring/airplay on Apple TV will only play/screen for a few minutes on my TV then turn off. Then I have to press screen mirroring again for it to come back on or sometimes have to enter a new code. I used to be able to watch a movie using Airplay from my Amazon Prime video app or my FilmStruck app uninterrupted. Not anymore.

Also, not only does the same thing happen with the WATCH TCM app through Airplay, but when the movie now starts, I can only get the audio, not the video.

I have tried restarting the Apple TV, but nothing works.

I need help.

iPhone 6s, iOS 11.0.3

That indicates a network issue

Make sure no other activity is occurring (other streaming, web use, network backups etc)

If on wifi try ATV on ethernet

To see a current status of the network get a report form istumbler, netstumbler or similar. Look for signal strength, noise, nearby networks

Test on another network

As for the Watch TCM app, receiving only audio means that the developer has either decided to block airplay or there is a glitch that they need to fix.

I had the same problem when mirroring an iPad Air 2 to an Apple TV Gen3. It was solved by resetting the WiFi connection on the iPad (Settings, General, Reset, Reset Network Settings), and power cycling the WiFi router. Not sure which of these was the cure, or if it required both, but I am glad this worked. This was a frustrating problem! Good luck, all.

I have done some tests on this problem and managed to resolve this by turning off Bluetooth on iPad.

The test with the problem:

mirroring from iPad when i am running a movie from the netflix app to Apple TV.
After 2-3 minutes the mirroring just disconect

Do you have the opportunity to do this test to see if it works for you too?

Turn off screen mirroring / airplay and then turn off Bluetooth on iPad and restart iPad, then test.

Apple TV gen3

- connected via Ethernet.

iPad: IOS 11.1.2

This was happening to me with the Amazon Prime video app. My cable provider is Comcast/xfinity, and my current router is theirs, and relatively new. Looking around, I found some advice to quit the app and then restart it, and after doing that, my problem seems to have been cured. Your mileage may vary, of course.

So- I reset my router, and did a hard reset on the iPad. Neither of those made any difference to the mirroring time-out issue, and, like you, everything else connected with my wi-fi functioned flawlessly before and after the iOS update. It was just the mirroring that disconnected after about 2 or 3 minutes. However, after force quitting and then restarting the app on my iPad, the issue seems to have vaporized. Whether that’s what did the trick or not, I can’t say. We’ll see if the problem recurs. If so, I’ll post again.

I also wondered whether it was Comcast, Amazon, or Apple not playing nicely with each other. But that may not be it. At least not until net neutrality is rescinded...

I have found a solution that so far seems to work for me:

I switched OFF bluetooth, then started screen mirroring, and then launched the Amazon APP and it all connected and started playing on my big screen right away with no issues whatsoever. Just as an experiment I switched bluetooth back, on while it was still Airplaying, and this didn't seem to affect it at all.

I will be running a long term test tonight (i.e. watch a few shows) but considering nothing at all would Airplay yesterday, so far this is a positive sign.

I'm using an Apple TV3 and an iPhone 7 running iOS 11.1.2

Welp, I thought I had the issue resolved, but tonight it recurred. Using Amazon Prime Video, streaming, mirroring to Apple TV. The mirroring would shut off after about 3 minutes. I’m trying to get the mirroring back on, I noticed that it appeared to have switched over to another iPad that was in the room.

Therefore, I tried turning off the wi-fi on the other iPad, and it hasn’t happened since.

So- perhaps there is some sort of actual, or unintended, “preference” for mirroring to an iPad, as opposed to an Apple TV? Because it certainly seemed to want to swap devices, spontaneously.

I have the same issue and agree it seems to be the update 11.1.1. My iphone SE was updated recently and since then Apple TV drops out after a couple of minutes or depending what I'm streaming ( Iview, SBS etc) freezes, or won't display picture. My husband's Iphone 6S has not been updated and continues to play Apple TV without a problem. This is so frustrating because Apple don't seem to recognise that it's a problem and therefore are not fixing it!

I have the exact same problem. It worked perfectly the day before I updated. I was able to watch a 2 hr movie with no dropping or reduction in resolution. The very next day after I updated, now screen mirroring will not last more than two mins. The video will not stop or stutter it merely stops playing on the Apple TV and continues on my phone.

This is not a network problem. This is not a hardware problem. Since the only thing that has changed between the working system and the non-working system is the OS, then that would point to this being an iOS 11 problem.

I have not had any issues in the past few years. The problems arrived the day I upgraded to 11.1.

I have gone so far as to create a new isolated network using an Airport Extreme (2016 model with current firmware) and the same issue happens. I have also reset the ATV and redownloaded the latest firmware and rebooted the iPhone 6S. The disconnect happens on 2.4 and 5 bands, I've tried multiple channels, I've tried a total of 3 routers. The problems also arises on an iPhone 7 with current firmware.

This is a wonky software issue brought up in 11.1 and 11.1.1.

The issue might not be widespread, but it is a real issue. Searching Google for airplay/mirror/appletv/disconnect/etc in the past week reveals may other people with similar problems.

Interesting that Vazandrew has responded quite rudely to my last input whereby I have simply noted that an upgrade to IOS 11.1.2 yesterday has so far fixed the problem of Airplay not working since I upgraded to IOS 11 from IOS 10.

I am responding as a reply here because I cannot respond to Vazandrew's reply - perhaps he has blocked me? I am taken aback that he has been arrogant and dismissive of the fact that all my experiences of the system not working would indicate it is not a network problem but one generated by the IOS system. My reasoning - my husband's IOS 10 Iphone continued to operate airplay as normal but mine after the upgrade wouldn't. A network issue would affect his device as well. And how else can it be explained that prior to IOS 11 my Iphone worked perfectly and only after upgrading to 11.1.2 did it resume working again? With respect Vazandrew you cannot correctly diagnose my particular issue without proper examination and testing of my devices and their interaction within the system. Your response in accusing me of a rant is completely inappropriate and given your negative responses to other posts I wonder if you shouldn't be refraining from participating in the discussion. And I shall leave it at that.

I have the same issue, have been sending workout videos (from same website) from my iPad to my tv via my Apple TV using mirroring. I have been doing this up to 5 times/week for at least a month. I updated my iPad to iOS 11.2 today and it kept Crashing. Finally I used my phone and it still worked. Def related to the iOS update, nothing else has changed.

I have the same issue as Mariah. After updating my ipad mini, airplay drops connection to my AppleTV every 3 minutes. Sometimes I get a connection error, other times I get a poor wifi signal error. Worked flawlessly before the update. Everything on AppleTV (Netflix streaming, etc ) continues to work fine

over wifi, it is just the connection between the ipad mini and AppleTV. I have restarted both to no avail. My AppleTV

is gen3.

AppleTV A1469 -- Software 7.2.2 (8015) and current.

As a side note, I used to get this type of 3 minute drop if mirroring was turned on AND the streaming app had built in airplay capability. But I can't see where both of these would be turned on.
