GPS not working after update to IOS11

Hi,

Since I’ve updated my IOS to version 11 (also to 11.0.3) the GPS is not working in maps and Waze anymore. This is happening both in my iPhone 6 and iPhone 5s.

I understand that this is happening to many users, is there any update that solve that?

Thanks,

Dror

Had the same frustrating issues with all of my GPS applications.

The "Do Not Disturb" setting was set to "When Connected to Car Bluetooth" by default. Changing it to "Manually" fixed the issue for me. Hope it helps!

Happened to me again on Saturday night, I was on the way home from an event in the Uber - the GPS updated for the first 3 - 4 minutes of the ride then stopped. I arrived at home on the Upper West Side in Manhattan (77th street) and the GPS showed that I was still on 26th street and never updated again.

I caught the Subway to work this morning, same thing - from entering the subway station, the GPS did not update until I was at the office, despite walking outside for about 5 minutes after arriving at 14th Street.

Going to be hard to get Apple to swap the phone or even diagnose it, they are not going to hop on the train with you.

I'm having the exact same issue with my iPhone 6 that all started with an upgrade to iOS 11.0.3. I've been in contact with Apple Customer Support over the past few days to try and resolve the issue--but nothing has changed in the slightest. Tonight, with support on the line, I went through a full factory restore of my phone, and did not use a backup (so no third-party apps were on the phone). With a factory restore (running iOS 11.1), I tried to use Maps, but with the same results as before. I then downloaded Waze (my preferred GPS app) and receive the same message as before--"Seeking GPS. Try going outdoors..."

Downloading GPSdiagnostic yields some interesting information. My lat/long coordinates are close--but not as accurate as they should be (+/-200 ft). Of course, as many of you have already noticed--while attempting to use a GPS program, the initial coordinates are somewhat close--however, GPS tracking does not work at all. The GPSdiagnostic app also states that Location Services have been started, enabled, and are functioning normally. HOWEVER, though lat/long coordinates are provided (as described above), the app also indicates that it does not have any communication with any GPS satellites. There is a Satellites vs. Quality bar chart that is completely blank (the x-axis is labeled "1", "2", "3", and ">=4" and y-axis indicates signal strength from 0% to 100%). Also, "No Satellites" is displayed in the chart where the bars should be.

I'm stating this because I think it affirms what we've known all along--this is entirely a software issue. Obviously, GPS data is being received because coordinates are being provided (I don't think the coordinates are based off of cellular data, right?), but there's apparently (buggy) code in the new update which incorrectly tells GPS-enabled apps that no satellites have been found. Ergo, those apps do not function as they should.

These are just my thoughts. I'm absolutely convinced it's a software/update issue (vice a hardware or settings issue), but I'm wondering why this wouldn't affect more people (e.g. other people with a factory fresh iPhone 6 running iOS 11.1).

Do you guys have any more updates on your end?

I am on my final warning with the Apple moderators here and I doubt that even this message will be allowed to stick as apparently I have ignored the rules of posting during all of the comments that i've made during this thread. I will however give it a go as I personally don't like this place at all any more and am more than willing to be banned for making my moderate suggestions, however unhelpful one person has deemed them to be. I have never liked the idea of censorship. Especially when it's taken to such a ridiculous level as it is here.

For the potential benefit of the few, I will say that there is one of a few important connectors inside the iPhone 6 that reside in and around the top of the screen, close by the ear speaker. A few people appear to be starting to realise that their GPS issues may just be a matter of a poor electrical connection and you are another one to add to that list.

I would also note that I suspect due to the age of the iPhone 6, that some people have probably had the battery replaced. If that was done at a proper shop by proper people then the connectors that you have to disconnect in order to remove the screen before replacing the battery (i've done this twice personally) will have been reseated properly and other connectors will not have been inadvertently compromised. Many people replace the batteries themselves which is understandable due to the high cost of having it done at the Apple store (probably an incoming ban for that comment alone). Therefore there maybe a higher chance that the reconnection of the connectors wasn't done properly. If that comment is ringing bells with anyone then you may be a screwdriver away from fixing it yourself.

If not, then according to most, the next release of iOS will fix it for you

Hi All,

My iPhone 6 issue with GPS after 11.2.+ update has been resolved finally.

I subscribed for developer edition and applied the beta version available for public. Now my iOS version is 11.2.5 and with this build its working now 😎.

I have been to the service center and in contact with support team, but this beta version helped me resolving the issue.

You can buy happiness by applying this update ✅

Thanks

So you paid the $99 yearly developer fee to update your device with beta software?

You don't have to pay for trying beta version which is available for public. You might need to follow two to three simple steps before unlocking the beta version. You have to enroll your device to avail the update 🙂.

Please go though the below given linksℹ.

This becomes more and more interesting (or frustrating).

I have an iPhone 6. Google Maps, Apple Maps and Waze was working perfectly while it's on IOS 9.0.3. A week ago, I was told by IT department to upgrade to IOS 11.

After the upgrade, I noticed Google Maps does not have the "Start" (navigation) button anymore. Location service was turned off for Google Maps. This is weird, because it never happened before in any of the IOS upgrades. No big deal, I just manually turned it back on.

Then I start noticing Google Maps got huge delay on updating my location. My location showing on the App was half a mile off.

Many people claimed to fix the problem by replacing the flex cable. I'm going to try that since the cable is just a couple dollars. So far, I haven't seen anyone NOT fixing the problem by replacing the cable. But I'm curious - if it was the cable problem, why the problem only surfaces after IOS 11 upgrade?

Was it because IOS 11 is less forgivable on defective cables?

thanks, very useful reading. In particular: "Location Services uses GPS, Bluetooth, crowd-sourced Wi-Fi hotspot, and cellular towers to determine the location of your device. Your Apple Watch might use the location of your paired iPhone if it's nearby. If Location Services is on, your iPhone will periodically send Apple the geo-tagged locations of nearby Wi-Fi hotspots and cellular towers in an anonymous and encrypted form". This however confirms that concern that if my iPhone is the only thing with a wireless connection in the surroundings, it will get lost again. not reassuring but what can I do.. apart from changing phone, I mean.

yes, turning aeroplane mode does not itself save the battery BUT in the meantime it makes a few dozen of apps stopping from refreshing, sending notifications, continuously searching for a connection, asking to connect to a feeble wifi and then saying that the signal is lost, downloading tons of emails, messages, updates.. and it's quicker than stopping each of them.

thanks, it is off, the problem is that it still connects automatically to known NW and the one in the office changes password every 6 hours (it's meant for guests rather than employees). So it keeps popping up. I use it every now and then, but otherwise I keep wifi off in the office and often also aeroplane mode on so none bothers me. For the email I have the computer anyway. And not using the phone really saves the battery 🙂

I just checked all my cycling tracks in the Activity app. The first track that has dotted lines (no GPS) was for March 14, 2018. Prior to that I had no difficulty getting a GPS signal.

On February 26 I did a long wilderness hike in the jungle here in Thailand. Gaia GPS has no trouble getting and keeping a good GPS signal.

I installed 11.2.6 in mid February.

Now my 6s won’t get a GPS signal at all.

Mar 27, 2018 12:43 AM in response to Buadhai

Hi Buadhi,

I did not bother to buy that, to be honest. I'm pretty sure I'm getting a GPS signal, as both Google Maps and Waze knows my location and the dot moves when I move. It's just that the GPS signal is weak to get the exact location.

Let's say the iPhone's GPS is precise enough to get a ~3m radius location. I'm at about 15 m now and it's not precise enough for Waze to start navigation.

Thanks Das_Kind, this document is useful.

I think I'm just gonna wait for the soon-to-be-released iOS 11.3, do a clean install again and see if it fixes anything. If not, than I'll try to get the GPS HW replaced. I've just found a store where they do it for about 20$. I don't think I'd do it myself, I don't have the patience anymore 🙂

Most apps seem to navigate just fine without GPS level accuracy. For me Google Maps works fine with just Bluetooth/WiFi/Cellular. Strava (the cycling app) won’t work at all without GPS. MotionX GPS will track, but not navigate without GPS. I’m not a Waze user, but when I tried it, it showed my position but would not navigate without GPS.

Bottom line: unless you have an app that tells you, you can’t really know if you have a GPS connection.
