iOS 11 Dock Floating Problems On iPad Air 2

I upgraded my iPad Air 2 and now my dock seems to float from side to side or up or down depending if I’m in landscape or portrait, see below. Is there a fix for this or is it a known problem that is going to be addressed in a version upgrade? I have not been able to find any documentation on this issue & I can’t believe I’m the only one having this problem.

Thanks,

Jim...

You are not alone. I hope they fix this. I can’t access the apps on the left of the dock when this happens, so I am forced to restart. I expected them to catch the bug and correct it in the last update, but no luck yet.

As you can see, not only is it floating in both orientations, it disappears altogether on one side.

Thanks so much for posting this! Yes ever since I upgrade I have the issue too and I now have to search for my mail icon, search for chrome and so on because I have no bar. Those idiots that say restarting the machine FIXES the issue evidently have no clue what the word Fix means. Yes sure restarting temporarily makes the bar show up for a few minutes but, as soon as you go into an app or map or whatever and then come back to the homepage the bar is gone again or floating somewhere off the screen...that’s not a fix...heck it isn’t even a workaround, I’m not going to restart my iPad every time I use something on my tablet. A workaround is to go to search and type in what you need and the app will popup or you can ask Siri and she’ll brink it up too.

I went to Best Buy and tried the same action on a 12.5” pro and it does the exact same thing; the bar is an issue. However the bar works fine on my iPhone 8. So it appears it is a bug for iPads in general.

When people say "reset" an iPad I hope you are not doing the two button "force restart." This is holding down power button and home button simultaneously until the iPad restarts. This is not the preferred way to "restart" an iPad - it is intended for when the iPad is frozen or locked up. It is somewhat more risky as it is akin to just pulling out the power plug on a desktop computer - it potentially can cause problems to the OS or apps. The best way to "restart" an iPad is to just power it off by holding down the power button until you get the "Slide to power off" message. This method correctly shuts down running apps and the OS before turning off the machine. With my wife's iPad Pro this works just fine at getting the dock to stop misbehaving - for a while. Repeatedly doing a force restart by holding down the two buttons is increasing your chances of something going wrong - along with the dock issue. Note that these steps vary among the different iPhones, but seem to be the same on all iPads.

Hi, I just finished to read the 6 pages of this thread an to send a message using the link above.

I experiment the same problem as you concerning the « floating » dock and agree with popping ads in the games theory. I think that whatever the game, the ads eventually changing the screen resolution are the key of our problem, whatever the country (I live in France) and whatever the iPad running iOS 11_11.2.2. If someone has tried iOS 11.2.5, just tell us if it solves the problem, I am afraid to update to worse on my iPad 10.5.

Thanks to all who wrote in there, you proved me I was not alone with this issue and that unfortunately we cannot do anything by ourselves.

So come on Apple. Maybe we should write to the support service with the same title. I put « Dock floating » ...

Hi, I think I’ve found something to avoid the reboot when the bug occurs. Avoid to change the display when an add comes in a game or an app. When you are in portrait mode do not change to landscape if the add requires it. And also try to launch an app in the format you know it needs from the main screen.

Here it is, hope it’s helpful.

That actually sounds like something that happened. I'm not a big gamer. The only thing I play is Angry Birds Friends, and Monopoly Bingo. There are times when an ad is playing that I might put the iPad down or something, and it causes the rotation to re-orient. I don't recall if the rebel dock happened after that, but it's a strong possibility. I'll know today at some point. I'll do my best to post an update either way in the next day or two. Thanks for the heads up. It seems like something Apple could fix, but for now, we have a temporary solution.

Again, running iOS 11.2.2 on an iPad Air 2, model MGKL2LL/A. I went to test the “game ad” theroy on my device. I went into Crossy Road (wide orientation), watched an ad then exited the game to return to the home screen. My dock was gone. My device demonstrated the same exact behavior as shown in my previous post when I rotated my device in 90 degree increments. Resetting the device cleared the problem.

Hey there ! Another track to follow, the bug went again’ even changing the view

before using the app. But when you are in landscape display, if the dock disappear, you can

see it again if you rotate the display to 360* . That’s what works for me if I don’t want to reboot

immediately. The goal for me is to try to avoid the bug to come. So let’s see ...

I was having this problem and I think I just got it fixed. I read where the support people kept suggesting to turn off the iPad and turn it back on. I'd done that to no avail. I tried a hard reset (hold home button and off button at the same time until it turns off). I believe that the hard reset fixed my problem. Hopefully, it's will help you and others, too.
