Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities, derekfromcoleraine.
If I understand your post correctly, you have to manually press the Sleep/Wake button to lock your iPhone as it is not automatically locking. I'd like to help.
Let's take a look at the setting that can affect this feature. Tap Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock and see which amount of time it is currently set to Auto-Lock after. If you have Low Power Mode enabled, Auto-Lock will be automatically set for 30 seconds. For more information about Low Power Mode, see this article:
Use Low Power Mode to extend battery life on your iPhone
Let us know if that resolves this issue for you.
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Take care.

Agreed I gave my 6 to my wife when I got my 8. The 6 had been the perfect phone for me which is why for the first time since the 3G I had not upgraded after 2 years of owning. I nearly bought another 6 but thought the faster internals must be better.

Now I have to not forget to push the power button before ending my session every time most annoying.

I wish I could have bought the iphone 6 again. This issue is tedious and makes the battery go within a couple hours. I reset it and that worked for a week and a bit, but now the issue is the same. Resetting is a pain in the neck - I have to reenter all the wifi info, and repersonalize the phone.

Please fix this in your next update.

I totally agree - never had this problem with my iphone 6. I just spoke with support today and they wanted me to reset to factory settings. That puts all the onus on the customer - I lose photos every time that for some reason don't get backed up properly - complete hassle. They need to fix this on their end instead of expecting customers to do all the work to restore their phones in the hope it will fix the software problem. Really disappointed in all this.

Can confirm this does not resolve the issue. I’ve also tried resetting to factory and powering on off (other recommended solutions). Still doesn’t go to sleep. Results of Apple using garbage components for greater profit and trash software to match. Thx guyz. Edit: I am up to date on software release, something I normally avoid because all these updates do is bog down my phone further. But I have updated to try to resolve.
