Yes, this is support forum for technical issues and all of us are just users, none of whom are privy to anything Apple decides to do. I imagine a great deal of time and thought went into the swipe to open home page. My guess and mind you it's a guess is this is a battery saving issue. If you look at your phone and don't swipe up, it won't open, which will save battery life. But again, it's just a guess.

That's likely true. And they are laughing at this thread if they are. Case in point.

Yes, agreed. A very annoying extra step and my least favorite feature of the iphone X. Face recognition was promoted as such a big feature on the X and now an added step? UGH! Hopefully Apple will have enough complaints about this to upgrade to avoid the swipe up.

To set up Face ID:

1. Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode. If asked, enter your passcode.
2. Tap Set Up Face ID, then position your face in front of your device and tap Get Started.
3. Look straight into your iPhone and place your face inside the frame.
4. Gently move your head to complete the circle. If you're unable to move your head, tap Accessibility Options.
5. When you finish the first Face ID scan, tap Continue.
6. Gently move your head to complete the circle for a second time.
7. When Face ID setup is complete, tap Done.

If you didn’t set a passcode, you’ll be asked to create one to use as an alternate way to verify your identity.

To choose features that you want to use Face ID with or reset Face ID, go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode.

I agree that the swipe is an unnecessary additional step. Very cumbersome.

If you try the Android equivalent it is much cleaner: look at phone, and bang, you're in...

Why would I want to unlock my phone just to stare at a black screen?

Glad I am not the only one who found it annoying. I was googling about this and happened to find this thread. I was hoping this thread would have a solutions or way to turn it off, but to my surprise, there is actually no settings to turn this off. :(

Apple needs to add an option to allow users to open straight to Home Screen with Face ID... I definitely agree with the original post that it is frustrating that this is not an option and it does create an extra step. For those of us who don't use notifications very often, this is a stupid setup that goes backwards in usability.

Continuous Improvement.... why not take it down to one step.

Yes Allan and it makes 1000% sense from a practical perspective. Why these people moan and whine about the smallest details, ones actually providing a useful benefit is beyond me, tbh.

I wonder if these people contact their car manufacturer and complain about how things work in their cars. I'm betting they don't. For whatever reason people here think they should be able to customize the user experience on their phone to be exactly how they want it. Customization to that level simply isn't reasonable and won't ever fly in the Apple Universe.
