I guess a lot of people are hitting their screen instead of the side button. 😁
It means double-click the side button rather than "double-tap" the screen. This allows Face ID for installation. This is very awkward wording for the iPhone X interface because the distinction between clicking and tapping is subtle. It should say "double-click button" just to avoid confusion by thousands of users who have obviously searched for the answer.
You had me laughing at your comment only because when I first saw the message to double-click on my phone I had no Idea it was the side button, so I was double tapping on the screen and after a few days, I was so frustrated I clicked on my apple support app and started relating what was happening and of course, when the support person directed me to the button on the side of the phone I felt like a complete idiot. Just my ordeal with the double click button and I thought I share so you can have a laugh. 😁
I agree, and find this is an inconvenient step. I assume they wanted to add an extra confirmation so face ID doesn't automatically approve, but am hopeful they can change the double click to something else. An on screen button would be better in my opinion.
If this can help you, you were not the only one 😉
I don't own an iPX (I have an iP7), so when I found the solution (Googling in Internet) I was very surprised and, to test it, I called a friend of mine (fresh iPX owner) and asked him to test it for me.
The first answer was: there's NO side button... and I was a little bit confused 😕.
But after a few moments we got it.
Have a nice day.

Why is this extra step necessary? Very clunky and annoying.
It was not clear to me that the physical button (as opposed to a tap) was required.
yes it freaked me out too ... proustgiulio is correct absolutely .. you have to double click the power button on the righthand side and then it continues to install
I agree with you, Joe.
On iOS 11 manual (available on line) some gestures related to iPX are not described in detail.
I've found also the following support article, but there's no explanation about this thread's argument.
Use gestures to navigate your iPhone X - Apple Support
I'll ask Apple support dept. to implement the manual.

As you certainly know, you're not addressing Apple here. This is a user-to-user forum, we are just users like yourself.
When you have comments/suggestions, the most useful and incisive thing to do is to submit your feedback directly to Apple at: Product Feedback - Apple
Thanks and best regards.

This is totally non-intuitive! If it said "Double click the side button..." or something like that one would know what to do without searching or contacting support. C'mon Apple, you know how to do better than this.
The double click the button to install is the worst feature ever. It is completely the worst interface I can imagine on a phone. You remove the home button on your flag ship model to only have me click another button.
WOW! works perfectly. Everyone is so programed to touch the "get" buttom vs. what the iPhone is asking for; double click the button. I guess we all need to follow the instruction....Thanks a million (I feel stupid 😝)
Well, if you are using face id in the appstore and by mistake you click to install a 10$ app, it will quickly scan your face before you cancel it and it will charge the $10, but thanks to that extra step, that’s not going to happen
I’m at a loss as to understand why the double click is even necessary, if my face is secure enough to unlock my device without any other interaction, why not a simple AppStore purchase?
Makes no sense...
That is exactly right. You would double click the side button on the iPhone X to install the app.
App Store double click to install... nothing happening
