mac apps won't open from dock

Suddenly, the following Mac apps won't open from the dock: finder, app store, calendar, mail, textedit. I've tried re-booting the machine, trashing the preferences for the specific apps, restoring the prefs from an earlier Time Machine back up. No luck.

Any ideas how to fix this gratefully received.

I would do this first:

open the apple menu, select Forcequit, select Finder, then choose "Relaunch Finder" (this also relaunches the Dock).

If that does not solve it, restart the mac while holding the Shift key (Safe Mode), it will be slow, login, see how the Dock behaves in there. Then restart normal.

Am looking at Activity Monitor but not sure what I'm looking out for..? After a series of re-boots all the Mac apps + Finder window appear to be launching ok from the dock - though I'm not confident that will be the case the next time I boot up!

Thanks for all your help. If you have any further suggestions as to how I can clean the machine up I'll certainly give them a try 🙂

The amoeba thing is in /Library/LaunchDaemons (this library is at the top level of your disk's directory). You can paste this path into the "Go to folder..." dialog in the Finder Go menu. The quark thing is in /System/Library/Extensions. You might be able to manage that one via System Preferences, Extensions.

Sorry, I may not have been clear: the apps have been running, since I have them listed as starting but hidden on startup. I just haven't been able to open a window from them using the dock. Anyway, it all seems to be working ok now.

Here's the hostfile stuff you wanted:

about this: "can't see com.quark.driver.Tether64 in system/library/extensions".

You should not mess around in the /System/Library at all: the files in there that you see, are having an other name in the etrecheck list, and deleting the wrong one can crash your system completely. Stay away from this Library.

The amoebe thing is a leftover from about 5 years ago, it was a troll that does not exist anymore, and the line in the LaunchDaemons is harmless (and thus can be deleted without penalty).

Waiting for the hosts text...
