mac apps won't open from dock

Suddenly, the following Mac apps won't open from the dock: finder, app store, calendar, mail, textedit. I've tried re-booting the machine, trashing the preferences for the specific apps, restoring the prefs from an earlier Time Machine back up. No luck.

Any ideas how to fix this gratefully received.

I would do this first:

open the apple menu, select Forcequit, select Finder, then choose "Relaunch Finder" (this also relaunches the Dock).

If that does not solve it, restart the mac while holding the Shift key (Safe Mode), it will be slow, login, see how the Dock behaves in there. Then restart normal.

Yes, I think it is the Tether64Kext.

Lexiepex has a good idea - you do have an abnormal number of hosts.

What happens when you try to open them from the Dock?

Nothing. I can open a Mail window by keeping the dock icon pressed and selecting 'new viewer window'

Will they open if you double-click them in the Applications folder?

Nothing.

Does this behavior persist in a different user account, e.g., Guest?

Will test and report back

Does this behavior persist after starting up in Safe Mode?

will test and report back

Might as well try resetting the System Management Controller and resetting NVRAM and PRAM while you are fooling around with all this.

Have trashed the Bomgar and Cleverfiles launch prefs mentioned in the Etrecheck - and Calculator's back. Mail, though, refuses to launch a window from dock without holding down and selecting 'new viewer window'. Could be worse, I suppose!

Not all apps seem to have installers. Latest, after several re-starts: Mail now opens from Dock. Keychain Access opens from dock after I quit and relaunch it. Same with App Store. Calendar now won't open from dock or applications folder. Clearly something's awry...
