mac apps won't open from dock

Suddenly, the following Mac apps won't open from the dock: finder, app store, calendar, mail, textedit. I've tried re-booting the machine, trashing the preferences for the specific apps, restoring the prefs from an earlier Time Machine back up. No luck.

Any ideas how to fix this gratefully received.

I would do this first:

open the apple menu, select Forcequit, select Finder, then choose "Relaunch Finder" (this also relaunches the Dock).

If that does not solve it, restart the mac while holding the Shift key (Safe Mode), it will be slow, login, see how the Dock behaves in there. Then restart normal.

This is a "bad" list, even more with HighSierra.

a lot of rubbish from the past is still there, and a lot of incompatible items.

There are two ways to go about this:

- format the drive and install MacOs on a clean drive, after that download a compatible version of the software you want to have and install that. OR

- clean the whole thing, update incompatible software and when there is no compatible version yet, uninstall it.

assuming you want to clean up:

1. in the etrecheck list use the "cleanup" buttons.

2. SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems: remove all entries in the list, with the minus sign underneath. (all too old, or not compatible). Then restart.

3. SystemPreferences:

CTL+click Macaroni uninstall/Remove

CTL+click Flip4Mac remove (it is no longer serviced and all codecs are in all modern players integrated).

CTL+click MacFuse (too old, does not work) uninstall/remove.

4. Safari->Preferences->Extensions: uninstall all extensions, you may later install either Adblock or Ublock.

5. MacintoshHD->Library->InternetPlug-ins: delete all, except: Quicktime and the two Flashplayer plugins (the rest is s**t or too old).

6. uninstall copycliphelper, find a new copyclip in the Appstore (e.g. Flycut).

7. uninstall LittleSnitch, Protech.

8. Now restart again. This is not all, but I prefer to have a new etrecheck list after this: then we are doing some more things: unclear if you have a compatible version of Microsoft Office (I doubt it) and we have to correct the hosts file because that is "compromised" heavily.

What happens when you try to open them from the Dock?

Will they open if you double-click them in the Applications folder?

Does this behavior persist in a different user account, e.g., Guest?

Does this behavior persist after starting up in Safe Mode?

Might as well try resetting the System Management Controller and resetting NVRAM and PRAM while you are fooling around with all this.

something weird in your latest etrecheck list: a lot of apps are started hidden in the LoginItems list !!

you don't see them but they are running all the time: no wonder that you can not start them from the Dock: they are already running , and you can just open a new window for Mail from the Dock since it is already running and the same for the other icons!

I wonder what is causing this. Can you do following:

in Finder go to the menu GO, then select Go to Folder, type

/private/etc/hosts

in the goto field, it will show you the hosts file, CTL+click and select copy, copy to the desktop.

Then select the desktop hosts file and open it with textedit, select all in Textedit and copy it. Paste it here in your answer.

So your hosts file is quite suggestive: it looks like there once was hacked Adobe stuff on your mac, or one or more false keys were used (key generators often protect the install by blocking access to Adobe (in this case) to avoid uncovering by Adobe). Alternatively you may have downloaded the software from an unsafe source (some "aggregate" sites), or by torrents.

If you delete everything in the hosts file below the "fe80::1%lo0 localhost" line, the hacked Adobe software is uncovered to Adobe. So you have to make sure that you uninstall everything Adobe on your mac before you correct the hosts file. Installing new software downloaded on the Adobe website with a new key, may come over the old remnants. So I come back to my first post, and I advise a clean install (the first option I mentioned).

So Calculator launches from the Applications folder? Have you tried removing its icon from the dock (quit the application, control-click its icon and select Options>remove from dock) then putting it back in the dock (either drag its icon from the application folder to the dock or launch the application then control-click, Options>keep in dock)?

OK, done all that - thanks. Office version is version 15.39 but there's also a copy of 2011 version on there. Here's the latest Etrecheck file:

My only guess at this point is that something you have installed hosed up your computer - or at least your current user account - fairly well. That bomgar stuff and the cleverfiles stuff are suspects, I suppose. It is possible that this software is not compatible with your operating system (High Sierra).
