panic UPSB: thunderbolt power on failed

Every time my macbook hibernates and/or sleeps a significant amount of time it crashes when waking. I'm getting the same kernel panic every time. This began after applying the 10.13.1 update and happens 1-3 times a day. Anyone have any ideas?

HEY, I called Customer Care and they gave a good solution for this problem. This may work for you guys, as it SOLVED my problem 🙂

1. Turn off your MacBook Pro computer.

2. Once turn off, Press and Hold at the same time: Shift + Control + Option + Power Button, for like 10 seconds. Nothing will happen on your screen, but it does all the cool stuff on the inside. For what the Apple customer care guy told me, it just like resets the energy flow on the circuits on the main board, or something like that.

3. Release the 4 buttons at the same time.

4. Turn on your computer, log in, and try to connect something on the Thunderbolt port. It should work now...

My problem has just gotten a lot weirder. I ran diagnostics which passed. I booted in to safe mode and did not experience the problem. But now that I'm back in normal mode, Thunderbolt no longer works at all. In the System dialog it just says "Thunderbolt: No drivers are loaded" . Since Thunderbolt ceased working I am not having the crashes but I can't use any of my Thunderbolt peripherals.

My concern is that this may be unique to MacBook pros, iMacs, etc that have upgraded RAM. I've noticed a pattern that users with this issue all seem to have 16gb RAM, which is an upgrade on a 13 inch MacBook Pro and many others. I have the same issue and I upgraded my ram through Apple.com when I ordered my new 2017 MacBook Pro just 2 weeks ago. Most likely this is an issue with High Sierra 10.13.1, but the upgraded RAM can't just be a coincidence.

I am experiencing exactly the same issue. This Kernel panic error regarding thunderbolt was shown once (when I opened my laptop after long sleep time), and then one of the Thunderbolt ports ceased working AT ALL... No more errors, but now thunderbold doesnt work... Oh, and mentioned that this started happening after upgrading to the useless High Sierra OS...

My computer reboots several times a day when it goes to sleep due to this issue. Seems like every time I try to use my iMac now I have to wait for it to load everything due to this issue. Not fun Apple!!! For the money you devices cost I expect better.

Over the past few months I have sent dozens of reports to apple and no response. This issue should have been corrected long ago. As an IT guy, I always used Windows PC's and only recently switched to an Mac for my home PC. Used to brag to my peers at work about how stable my Mac was. Not anymore. My Window PC never had issues like this. Was looking to get an Apple TV. Not anymore. Not buying anything else from apple right now. If this isn't resolved my next PC purchase will be a Microsoft computer.

Dec 22, 2017 2:32 AM in response to JoMiya

Thanks for your report. I could write the same words. Coming from the MS Windows world, where I can't remember when the last crash happened, I'm disappointed to see my brand new MacBook Pro crashing several time a day when sleeping. And not a single reaction from Apple support after dozens crash reports sent. Could be a simple "known issue, we are working on it".

Dec 29, 2017 5:06 AM in response to Witchbutter

I was having the same problem after updating my 2017 13" no Touch Bar pro. I reinstalled macOS command + option + R at startup (hold until globe appears and log on to your wifi) for online recovery - disk utility - erase drive - reinstall macOS from scratch and it worked I've gone days since without any kernel panics when I was getting maybe 5 a day lol

In my MBA early 2015 this issue is still persisting. its been END of Jan 2018 and i am running 10.13.2. I visited the Apple Service Center and they told me my motherboard got to change if i need permanent solution for this problem. Also, my thunderbolt hardware don't detect under Software Report > Thunderbolt. Sad 😟. motherboard cost is almost similar to a new MBA

In my case, the "Shift + Control + Option + Power Button", which the Apple customer recommended, did not work. I took the Mac to the Genius Bar and showed them screenshots of the problem. Per the staff there, High Sierra had a different format than all previous versions of OS. This has been causing a higher frequency of similar issues. Following a diagnostic test (which didn't find any issues), they performed a complete uninstall and reinstall of High Sierra. Now, the computer works like it should. Per the Genius Bar staff, the cause for this error is abstract - it could be anything from the WiFi not able to connect after hibernation to any other automatic process that did not kick back on as it should. The whole process (sans back-up) took about 15 mins. FYI, my computer was a week or so past the warranty and Apple did not charge me anything.
