Bluetooth not available on Mac

Hi All,

After the upgrade to High Sierra a couple of weeks ago I started seeing an issue with Bluetooth availability. When the system is rebooted, Bluetooth comes up without any issues and everything is functional. After some time though, the bluetooth function on the Mac reports 'Not Available'. This happens at random (better said, I can't see a patern.. ), when actively working with the bluetooth trackpad. One second it works, the next it doesn't.

When that happens I need to connect a wired mouse to check details, but the only 'fix' is rebooting the system. Tried removing the plist for bluetooth and SMC reset as well, but so far the issue keeps coming back. Sometimes within hours after a reboot, other times a few day or even weeks before it re-appears.

I have not observed this issue when running on Sierra. This started after the upgrade to High Sierra.

This is happening on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015). I have other macs on the same release not showing this issue.

Any suggestions how to fix this, as this is annoying, esp. when working toward a deadline and having to reboot the machine to get the functionality of the trackpad back..

The following workaround is working for me:

System Preference -> General -> Deselect "Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud services".

Then restart compute.

This worked for me! Thank you for your response!

Hi all,

I did say the problem still persists in Mojave. However, in my case, for about a month now, turning off the 'Handoff' feature can get rid of may be 90% of the problem in Mojave. Out of ten there may be once the bluetooth is disabled completely that I need to restart the machine. But so far it's pretty good workaround I can find now.

Thanks hail to the thief and I tried your suggestion but no luck. The bluetooth disappeared completely a few times a day (even now) that some times I need to restart 3 or 4 times until getting my bluetooth module back on my task bar. And the connectivity drops a few times a day that I need to have 2 thunder cables standby rather than spending huge amount of time on this tiny task to gain my control back. I will be in touch with the Apple technical guy again tomorrow and will forward him the bug report as you suggested. So stay tuned!

Just want to share with you guys that I think I'm almost reaching a solution for MacBook Pro early-2015 users as well. The thing is, I had decided to clean format my hard drive, and reinstalled macOS Mojave. Only with the second wake-up from the sleep, without ANY THIRD PARTY SOFTWARES installed yet at the time, the Bluetooth module just crashed as usual.

So, I reformatted the drive again but this time, I didn't sign-in my iCloud account and immediately disable the 'Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices'. Guess what, my bluetooh module has worked flawlessly for about a week now!!! I've managed to install all the third-party applications I needed and so far everything is FINE!

I'll keep using my Mac without signing-in my iCloud account for a few more days to make sure the bluetooth bug is gone. And I'll update you guys if the problem comes back after I enable the iCloud feature in the System Preference.

I have the same problems with a completely new iMac 27 with Mojave. I have even sent it back to the store because I needed to rebeoot the iMac at least twice in order to see the bluetooth device (the internal one). And apart from this, the keyboard, nouse and trackpad disconnects sometimes only for seconds... and other times for longer ime until I co nnect trackpad with a cable and restart the bluetooth device. And, as I said, I even had to rebootr the iMac twice becuase it did not recognize its internal bluetooth device..... At this momento I am waiting for an answer from the store but.... Should I understand that this is going to keep on happening even with a new iMac if the store change it for a new one ?
