Bluetooth not available on Mac

Hi All,

After the upgrade to High Sierra a couple of weeks ago I started seeing an issue with Bluetooth availability. When the system is rebooted, Bluetooth comes up without any issues and everything is functional. After some time though, the bluetooth function on the Mac reports 'Not Available'. This happens at random (better said, I can't see a patern.. ), when actively working with the bluetooth trackpad. One second it works, the next it doesn't.

When that happens I need to connect a wired mouse to check details, but the only 'fix' is rebooting the system. Tried removing the plist for bluetooth and SMC reset as well, but so far the issue keeps coming back. Sometimes within hours after a reboot, other times a few day or even weeks before it re-appears.

I have not observed this issue when running on Sierra. This started after the upgrade to High Sierra.

This is happening on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015). I have other macs on the same release not showing this issue.

Any suggestions how to fix this, as this is annoying, esp. when working toward a deadline and having to reboot the machine to get the functionality of the trackpad back..

The following workaround is working for me:

System Preference -> General -> Deselect "Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud services".

Then restart compute.

This worked for me! Thank you for your response!

For anyone else experiencing this problem as of this posting-try the following-it worked for me.

http://osxdaily.com/2010/03/24/when-and-how-to-reset-your-mac-system-management- controller-smc/

SMC Reset (Systems Management Controller)

http://osxdaily.com/2010/03/24/when-and-how-to-reset-your-mac-system-management- controller-smc/

On the MacBook / Pro's keyboard, hold down the Shift+Control+Option keys and the Power button at the same time. Release all keys and the power button at the same time – the little light on the MagSafe adapter may change colors briefly to indicate the SMChas reset. Boot your Mac as usual.

its always something my bluetooth says not available all of a sudden i did a SMC reset, did a diagnostic nothing shows wrong hardware wise. so i think it is software related anyone have any other suggestions how to fix this i been on this for 2 hours now and just noticed it out of the blue when trying to copy and paste it did not even show the files that was mentioned in this reply in the library/preference for the bluetooth profiles to delete. the bluetooth options are totally gone i can't even see them in my system preference as if the computer is not bluetooth capable for me to use. it just shows a zig zag line like its not even recognizing the hardware.

All of those workarounds and justifications are BS.

Bluetooth problem disappears as soon as the system is rebooted SO:

- No interference can be the cause.

- No hardware issue.

AGAIN, bluetooth works great after a system restart. It's only then going to sleep then resume when it fails to reactivate.

It's a SOFTWARE issue at the end and none at Apple CARES about this.

I have had this problem with varying degrees of frequency for over six months now. A support session with Apple in March was fruitless as they failed to acknowledge that it was a known problem and would only troubleshoot if I uninstalled essential apps and upgrade to High Sierra, neither that I wanted to do.

The problem almost always occurs on wake from sleep, but does not occur every time I wake from sleep.

Restarting the computer [iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015)] is not an acceptable option.

The following command line solution seems to work for me. I know that not everyone is comfortable using the command line and it still requires that you can start a terminal window and type into that window, but here it is.

What we are doing is killing the bluetooth daemon which is then automatically restarted by the system.

To get bluetooth running again:

sudo pgrep blued

gives the process number of the bluetooth daemon (this step is not required but confirms that blued is running)

sudo pkill blued

kills the bluetooth daemon

after killing the daemon go to bluetooth setup and all should be good.

Note: this works for Sierra, but for High Sierra the daemon is renamed to bluetoothd

This is embarrassing. It makes it pointless to use the apple bluetooth keyboard and trackpad. So I'd better throw them in the bing right now with this issue unless Apple does something to it.

It should be as simple as fixing a feature present everywhere... like bluetooth is. And the others work... why the latest OSX doesn't? and why doesn't Apple say a word about it?!

So far what I do is go to the Activity Monitor, look for the bluetoothd process, select it and click Force Quit. That works 80% of the time. The other 20% requires a full restart, which is embarrassing.

So I ended pluging in my bluetooth keyboard to the iMac using the lighting cable. That seems to make both keyboard and Magic Mouse responsive again and while I leave the keyboard connected by cable the bluetooth issue doesn't occur again (neither on the bluetooth mouse).

I guess the issue has to do with two peripherals fighting for the bluetooth connection somehow.

Just an update for everyone.

For months I had been thinking it's MPB 13" (early-2015)'s bluetooth module that causes the problem. But lately I got another brand new MBP 13" (early-2015) (purchased around the same time as the former one but kept in the company's storage) which also had the similar problem. So I knew right away that the issue isn't specific to my laptop.

After reading this thread, I filed a bug report to Apple. After a week, I got a response from Apple's engineer that my bug report (44391800) is considered duplicate with another bug report (39795253) hence they decided to close mine.

Since I'm not the owner of the bug report (39795253), I can't see either the status nor what they have been doing so far with it. But at least it means they do know this bug does exist.

Keep our finger crossed that Mojave has already getting rid of this bug.

I have been running Mojave for the last week and this issue is still there. Incredibly annoying. This should be one of the easiest things to fix... ah... and it is not hardware. If i want to make sure the bluetooth works, all i have to do is make sure the mac doesn't go to sleep... so i get an album in iTunes in loop and lower the volume to the minimum.

That clearly states that is something to do with software, and the status the bluetooth is left when the system goes to sleep.

Frustrating!

Same here that I have replaced everything earlier but the issue is still there. I brought it to Apple Store for service again telling them the issue is still there and after a few days of service, or simply observation I guess, they told me that there wasn't such issue and refuse to carry on for further investigation and threaten me that they will trash my computer if I don't take it back in 30 days. Actually the support guy who called me on this was having a very terrible tone and I was so ******.

I am still in conversation with the hotline support engineer who is way more professional in certain sense. However, it seems to me that he couldn't do much but suggested me to upgrade to Mojave and see if the bug is still there. Eventually I upgraded the OS and the bluetooth issue happens much frequently. This morning alone I need to restart the machines 3 times until I can gain the bluetooth connectivity. And it keeps disconnecting so frequent that that now I need to use 2 cables for connecting my devices or I am not able to use the computer at all. Even restarting the computer won't help as it can disconnect anytime.

I will be in conversation with the backend support again in the next few days and see what else can be done then.
