concerns re downloading Gimp to OS X

I wish to use a free photo manipulation program and want to know if Gimp is compatible with my OS X Serra(10.12.6). I have heard that I need to have XQuartz for it to work properly. What is that and is this true. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Simone Karin Lehmann has been building and providing enhanced Mac GIMP downloads from her lisanet site for years. She is somewhat behind (2.8.18 .vs. 2.8.22) the primary GIMP site, but her builds are safe and stable.

You are getting that warning from Safari because you very likely have the Safari Preferences : General : Open "Safe" files after downloading selected. Uncheck that, and your download warnings will go away.

Thanks again but I use Chrome and looking at their preferences do not see what might correlate. Under downloads it says 'ask where to save each file before downloading'. Don't think that is it. I did try several times to download a free app recommended by someone on the site called something like echeck but it didn't open. It seems that Gimp is perfectly safe but until I get rid of that message I hesitate to go further.

you cant after 10.11, Apple removed it entirely so you can allow it on a per-incident basis only.

FWIW I do a lot of 3D work and use software that is developed by people who don't have any compulsion to register with Apple and do what they are told but provide amazingly great and free software because they are just totally cool people. GIMP is one of the products out on the internet that falls into this category - and I commonly see it suggested to game developers and amateurs who do not want to blow $$$$ on Adobe products which I support professionally and which have possibly the worst support staff in the world despite the tens of thousands of dollars we (the parent company I work with) pay them every year.

Gypsies had no home, the Doors had no bass player, GIMP developers do not have a developer license by papal decree from Pope of Apple. Do not let this frighten you, it should liberate you...

...Just download it from its souce page and nowhere else.
