Apple Watch - workout app freezes

I also have this problem! I have tried all the things suggested in this thread. Nothing works 😟

It has started happening since watchOS 4.0 on my Watch Series 2.

I loved my watch now it is really annoying to use as I mainly need the workout app and it almost always is frozen for a long time at first.

after the latest update 4.2.2 the situation is a little better and i went from ~30 sec to a more acceptable but still not good enough ~10 sec

i hope this will improve soon

it's ridiculous on such a crucial app like the workout which is the main purpose of the watch.

other app are doing fine

If I change the dock to Favorites and add Workout App as the only app and also disable auto-detect gym equipment in the watch menu (settings>general>workout>detect gym equipment) the app stops freezing.

To my surprise it now actually works better on my watch since I turned ON "detect gym equipment". The byline says that it will try to detect equipment all the time instead of just when you launch the workout app. So now it looks for it all the time instead of just when I open the workout app, which is what I think is a big part of the long freezes... It still hangs for a second or so, but before it was like 10 seconds or more.

Well, we shouldn't have to be jumping through hoops to get stuff to work. Apple should fix these issues. Instead they focus on... well... hoarding cash, instead of spending it on releasing stuff that's not in beta stage.

I’ve also been having this issue. Also been working with apple support trying various restarts and suffered they setting up as a new watch, incase it was an issue with my backup. Nothing working for me either. It’s so frustrating, Im glad it’s not just me tho as apple seem to know nothing about it happening!! Today they suggested I book an appointment to take it in and have the hardware looked at but it’s more effort than it’s worth for me as shop is too far away! Intrested to hear their take on ur diagnostics if they get back to you.

I wouldn't bother wasting time and money to go into an Apple store. From everything that has transpired, it is a software bug. And not a "life-threatening" one, so there will be no mainstream backlash, which is the only thing that makes Apple do something about an issue. They will take their sweet time fixing it, or it will fix itself with the next main OS.

Yeah it’s typical it works when ur trying to show the issue. I guess at least they know something is not right, but like adan said they will take their time as it’s not critical to them. Be another new one out before they fix it lmao!

whenever they do this no one ever gets back to you. it's like the new tech that reads it doesn't want to deal with it anymore. I have the same issue with my watch. can't find any solution then to open it up a minute early. the quality control at Apple has gone down the drain in the last year.

I also have this issue. It seems to be getting worse and it's super frustrating when trying to start a workout. It also does it consistently every time I use the workout app. Might try taking it in to the Apple Store

I seem to have solved this, at least for me. I believe the real culprit is the music app, which gets loaded with the workout app to allow music controls during a workout.

I had a theory that it was taking a long time loading the "tiles" representing all of the albums and playlists stored on my watch, since I had the "Heavy Rotation" option turned on in settings. This was syncing around 15 separate items to the music app.

Anyway, I unchecked Heavy Rotation so that only the standard 3 personalised Apple Music playlists were synced, and this has solved the problem for me.
