hbpix virus removal? (hbpix.dms file)

There is some kind of virus called hbpix that loads all kinds of popup adds in the background and frequently downloads numerous copies a file called hbpix.dms which has just 43 bytes. Some have reported that it's a single gray pixel in gif format.

This virus is widespread, effects both Mac and PC including the latest version of Safari and macOS. It's been around for months. Most the "solutions" you can find on Google are just websites shilling for MacKeeper (ironically MacKeeper is one of the most popular ads shown by this virus).

Can anyone post a real fix that doesn't require unwanted third party software? Why hasn't Apple addressed this? Even users in this forum are shilling for third party software instead of offering a real solution. This is outrageous that there is no official response on what to do about a widespread virus that's been going around for months.

I have the same issue... but nothing pops up. I don't have any extensions i don't use JavaScript and i don't know too much 'bout computer stuff i know too little. Please explain to me how does this stuff work :c i can't notice when this thing downloads... but i thought that i was crazy, 'cause i've never downloaded anything and suddenly something starts downloading. In my case, i didn't download anything for a while now, so i don't know where does it come from. I didn't agree to anything i only use the pages i use all the time. The last thing i downloaded was a game from the App Store so i don't think it was that. Besides the downloads are from a time ago now. I just saw some stuff sometimes downloading but, my bad, i thought that it was something from the software update or that i was crazy. 'cause i had the stickies in the desktop with a lot of important things and when i updated the super software update they were gone and i had connected my iPod by Wifi Sync and it was no longer connected... so i thought the issue was related... and now i was looking for something in my downloads when i saw this thing that "i downloaded yesterday" and my face was like "what?! No, i didn't" and well i came here right away. HELP ME! D:
