iPhone X with Apple Leather Folio Mic Issues

I have a repeatable problem affecting two iPhone Xs with the new Apple Leather Folio cover; when the cover is folded behind the phone in order to take a call, the microphone is muffled.

This appears to be caused by the folio's magnet interfering with the phone's microphone.

If, during the call, the cover is opened wide so it is not folded behind the phone, the call quality is immediately improved.

I'm guessing that this is going to be a problem for everyone as it is happening to both my and my wife's phones in the exactly the same manner.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

Hi,

I had the same problem and returned the leather folio case. The problem is not issued by magnets, it is because the folded cover overlaps the little microphone between the two camera lenses (little hole), which should reduce the background noises. Using this folio with cover folded it also rups over the microphone and it is almost impossible to make phone calls. I almost returned my iPhone, cause I thought it might be the phone, that is not working. I talked to the people from Telekom, went 2 times in an Apple Store, but nobody could help me and nobody knew anything about the problem.

It is an constructional defect of the leather folio case.

Just bought the Otterbox Strada and everything works fine. The iPhone X ist a great mobile phone, the best I ever had, but the leather folio is disaster.

I'm having the same problem with the letterbox strada leather folding case. Everyone says my voice is muffled when I make calls.

Interesting didn't know about this issue until I read it in this post. I have been using my black folio and didn't experience any issue. In fact, I really like it. I will again further do some testing to see if there really is an issue and will report back.

Its sad if this is the case. And even more sad that Apple doesn't recognize the problem. I was afraid of this, but I did have a small amount of hope when the support rep was convinced it was a problem for this case, some sort of manufacturing malfunction… Well, Ill have to wait and see…

The folio case is great, I really love it…

I really like having a folio case, gives me somewhere to keep my credit cards etc. It's a real pain in the *** actually. Almost enough to make to change for another phone manufacturer if I'm honest. Was a very close run thing, I just couldn't find the energy to go back to the store AGAIN to try and sort it (about 7 trips to the phone shop EE and a visit to the Apple store). Nearly cost me as much in fuel as the phone!!!!

Well, I have a brand new Pixel 2, and man, Android *****. iOS is far ahead in user exprience, so changing my daily driver from iOS to Android is not an option. But swapping the iPhone X to iPhone 8 could be an option.

Im not going back to carrying a wallet again, folio case for the win 😉

I can only go on my experience and the tests that I have carried out. i thought that those involved with this discussion, would be interested, in my findings. They are a layman’s view and I look forward to reading the definitive explanation. Perhaps, you have it and I have missed it.

Oh dear.....bit of an own goal there Apple. Not entirely satisfactory if you ask me (which they won't). Why sell a case that isn't fit for purpose?

I have exactly the same issue discovered on calls in an intermittent basis. I will try without the case but i heavily depend upon the magnetized base, i don't get it.

Yes, I experience the same thing this evening or a phone call and wondered why? It made me wonder where the microphones are actually located?

Yeh gave the 8 a lot of thought but love the camera on the X. Face recognition is bloody temperamental though :-/

I also have been experiencing the same muffled sound issue with a Zover sleep/wake folio case.
