iPhone X Lock Screen features disappear

This issue still persists on my iPhone X, but I may have narrowed it down to an issue with the raise to wake feature. If raise to wake is disabled, and I either press the side button, or tap the screen to unlock, this issue seems to be resolved. When I re-enable raise to wake, the issue returns a few times a day. For those on this thread still facing this issue often enough to notice if it indeed no longer happens, disable raise to wake (settings > display and brightness > raise to wake) and see if the issue is resolved. I am curious to see if we can narrow it down to this one errant feature. If so, I will submit a bug report against the raise to wake feature in particular, and hopefully Apple will more quickly resolve this annoying issue.

The only way for me to get the icons back to the home screen was to go to Settings>General>Reset>reset all settings

I tried disabling “raise to wake”, restarting, hard setting, and updating the iOS... none of those worked

Thanks for everyone's responses. I've had the issue too since getting the phone at launch. It went away for a while but seems to have popped back up since updating to iOS 11.2.5. Just got off a support chat and was told that "we are actually actively investigating this issue." and "it seems to be software related. Engineering is currently investigating to see what could be causing it, on that model.".

At least Apple is aware. As for a fix, I was told that going into settings > display and brightness > sliding it to large text can fix it. I haven't seen this fix posted yet so I thought I'd add it to the mix.

I went to apple store three days ago, and they told me to restore the device. I did the restore and the problem is not there anymore.

But I am very disappointed from apple. iPhone X has too many bugs...

So the release notes for 11.3 states “Resolves an issue that could cause time and notifications to disappear from the Lock Screen”. So hopefully they fixed the software issue. So far I haven’t had to restart my phone so my fingers are crossed. If anyone still experiences freezing/locked screen please reply here, thanks.

This has just begun to happen to me as well - it started yesterday, on December 16.

I have had the phone since November 3 - and no problems until yesterday.

I don't know why this software glitch suddenly has begun to exhibit. I'm on the latest iOS version 11.2.1.

The phone controls, date, camera icon, and (if playing) music control display all disappear from the lock screen (where they would ordinarily display on tap to wake or raise to wake.

Strangely, if I tap in the central area of the screen where the music player displays the Play/Pause button, the feature still works! So it would seem that the nature of the problem is that while the functionality is still there, something is causing the display items not to display (on the lock screen).

Annoying. And as others have said, the only fix seems to be to reboot the phone. After which it will work for a while - before the problem recurs.

Note: Also, I have reported this bug to Apple (today).

I´ve had the same issue since purchasing my iPhone X. The issue happens randomly. When the phone is locked and I raise it to unlock it, everything on the screen disappears (clock, date, flashlight button, camera button, etc) and the only thing that remains is the wall paper picture. However, I can unlock the phone by swiping up. I think Face ID still works but the "lock / unlock" image is not shown.

It even happened to me yesterday when the alarm clock on my iPhone went off at 6 a.m. When I raised the phone to turn the alarm off, there was nothing on the screen, only the wall paper photo, and I wasn't even able to turn off the alarm. I had to shut down the phone and turn it on again. I turned off the "raise to wake" feature and APPARENTLY this solves the problem. On another post someone stated that the issue doesn't happen if the wallpaper is selected to the picture that appears on the Iphone´s package box. I am also trying that fix with "wake to raise" on.

I have this issue too and went on live chat with Apple. They said the following: "We can narrow it down to hardware or software more definitively if you back up your phone, then erase it and set it up as new. If the lock screen items still disappear, we know that’s hardware" and they sent me instructions on what to do next. They also said they would "add me to the list". Must be pretty wide spread if they have a list going... Will try it later tonight and see what happens. Certainly a very annoying issue that I thought apple would have fixed long ago!!!!!

The newest update 11.3 states in the details that it should resolve the problem I updated and haven’t had the problem so far let’s hope it stays that way.

by no means am i saying this is a sure fix but it appears that i was able to fix it on my end. i essentially did everything that was suggested on this thread:

1. Disabled raise to wake (settings > display and brightness > raise to wake)

2. Changed my lock screen wallpaper to a standard Apple image

3. I also thought I found a pattern where the display issue would happen after receiving app notifications. Not sure if this was true or if it was a specific app but I decided to temporarily turn off all notifications.

4. Restarted phone

I turned notifications back on but kept raise to wake = disabled and the standard apple wallpaper image. Haven't had issues for 4 days.

I just got off the phone with Apple Support. I'm getting a replacement phone. The phone technician said I either had to do that or take it in to a Genius. I'm assuming Apple is aware of the problem due to the technician's response. He stated that reloading the software wasn't a potential fix. Interesting.

Just to add to the chain of info... restarting or shutting down didn’t change anything for me (like I mentioned before it was only upon resetting all settings to factory did it then work)

Same problem here. I’ve had the iPhone X for a about a week now and it’s surprising if I manage to get through a whole day without it happening. There’s been one occasion where swiping down the Notification Center has fixed it, but otherwise I have to restart my phone. Really hope this gets fixed soon.

I have the exact same issue with mine, i even had this same issue with my iphone 7 plus. must be an ios 11 glitch. happens atleast once a day, needs a reboot to get the icons and access controls back.

That's what I thought - just wanted to be sure this wasn't a NEW development! 🙂

Yeah, restarting the phone is the only thing that works (temporarily - until the next recurrence). Shut down the phone. Wait a minute or two (I do, maybe it's not necessary), then restart the phone.
