iPhone X Lock Screen features disappear

Ever so often when I tap on the screen to wake, all of the lock screen features will disappear. Its random. I will tap on the screen, it wakes, but there is no Face ID lock in the top center, no home bar at the bottom, no quick access controls, no time, no widgets. Just a blank overlay with my Lock Screen wallpaper showing. However, the strange thing is, with no features showing I can still raise the phone to my face and unlock it. This is clearly a software glitch. Is anyone else have this problem?

I had no idea that Hal is still stirring up trouble. I figured he is still floating around in space, but if he’s hatching some evil plan with SIRI we should get any help we can. If MurderBot (and I will have to look into this) can help SIRI follow Isimov’s three rules of robotics or simply end her forever, I think we should. SIRI is simply the most frustrating woman in my life.

Beginning last week I was experiencing the same issue with a blank lock screen on my iPhone X where I couldn't see anything and the phone was freezing periodically multiple times a day. I had my phone from release day and didn't have this issue then. The only temporary fix I thought of at the time was to do a force reset by press the volume up, volume down, and holding down the side power button until the phone restarted. I got fed up so I took my phone to the Apple Store and they told me it was a hardware issue so they gave me another iPhone X and I transferred everything from my iCloud Backup. The next day, the issues with the blank screen returned. I tried following the suggestion of turning off the "Raise to Wake" feature in my phone's settings, but that did not solve the issue. It only reduced the number of times I would see the blank lock screen. Other family members of mine have this phone and they haven't experienced this issue, just me. So I've narrowed this down to being a software issue and I hope Apple fixes this issue ASAP on the next software update!

Wait -- so Apple told you this was a Hardware issue?

--And they replaced the phone?

That would be really upsetting if it is the case! I really don't want to have to replace the phone and go through the setup process all over again with logins and apps. What a drag. But it didn't solve your problem! So...is this just a software problem - or is there BOTH a software and hardware problem?

Can anyone else chime in on this -- has anyone else gone to the Apple Store with an iPhone X exhibiting this problem -- and if so, what was the AS's response?

Wait -- so Apple told you this was a Hardware issue? - Yes. The employee helping me took the phone to the back to show someone and came back and told me that it was a hardware issue. I asked if she had seen this problem before with other customers and she said No, but the guy in the back said he had seen a few of these blank lock screens. She said that what helped solve the issue with those previous customers was to change the entire screen of the phone. But she said in order to save time and not go through that process she offered me another phone.

--And they replaced the phone? - Yes

The fact that the issue carried over to my new phone according to other Apple employees I spoke with means its a software issue. They think I have corrupt files that carries over with each backup, which I don't believe is the case. They also suggested I set up my phone as new, which I'm not willing to do. This is definitely an iOS bug. I sent Apple.com/feedback a message to make them aware of this issue if they aren't already aware.

Hi SmartGuyB --

Thanks for the response. I agree it does sound like a software problem. I highly doubt it is the screen! If it were then the display would be going blank on occasions in other apps and on the 'desktop' (or whatever it's called). I'm also not willing to setup my phone from new. I went through a lot of trouble to move my text messages/history from my old phone to my new phone.

Well, I did bite the bullet and purchase AppleCare for the phone -- the prospect of a broken screen or back and the outrageous cost to fix either made the purchase necessary insurance. And I guess, if there is any kind of manufacturing defect with this phone that doesn't show up until after the standard warranty is finished, I'm covered for that as well.

But I really don't want the solution to be replacing the phone -- unless that REALLY is the problem (it does seem doubtful).

Happy New Year!

I might have found a work around. It worked for me and takes 10 seconds, so worth a shot!

Since day one I had a still or perspective wallpaper for lock screen. I changed that to the "Live" with the default red/blue wallpaper advertised on iPhone's packaging and ads. I haven't seen the "disappear" issue prop up for more than 4 days now.

Hopefully this works for everyone!

I´ve had the same issue since purchasing my iPhone X. The issue happens randomly. When the phone is locked and I raise it to unlock it, everything on the screen disappears (clock, date, flashlight button, camera button, etc) and the only thing that remains is the wall paper picture. However, I can unlock the phone by swiping up. I think Face ID still works but the "lock / unlock" image is not shown.

It even happened to me yesterday when the alarm clock on my iPhone went off at 6 a.m. When I raised the phone to turn the alarm off, there was nothing on the screen, only the wall paper photo, and I wasn't even able to turn off the alarm. I had to shut down the phone and turn it on again. I turned off the "raise to wake" feature and APPARENTLY this solves the problem. On another post someone stated that the issue doesn't happen if the wallpaper is selected to the picture that appears on the Iphone´s package box. I am also trying that fix with "wake to raise" on.

Curious to hear what your outcome is.

In the meantime, I realized that my problem is different ... and maybe not really much of a problem. The reason why my torch and camera icons on the lock screen were disappearing is because I disabled “3D touch”. .. for some reason it made sense to Apple to subsequently then remove those icons (why can’t they just be regular swipe buttons). When I “reset all settings”, that resets 3D Touch to “on” and hence the buttons show back up. Anyway, maybe someone reading this will realize that that is their issue.

by no means am i saying this is a sure fix but it appears that i was able to fix it on my end. i essentially did everything that was suggested on this thread:

1. Disabled raise to wake (settings > display and brightness > raise to wake)

2. Changed my lock screen wallpaper to a standard Apple image

3. I also thought I found a pattern where the display issue would happen after receiving app notifications. Not sure if this was true or if it was a specific app but I decided to temporarily turn off all notifications.

4. Restarted phone

I turned notifications back on but kept raise to wake = disabled and the standard apple wallpaper image. Haven't had issues for 4 days.
