iPhone 8/ 8 plus home button cracked

I have been using my iPhone 8 for a little over 6 weeks. Last night I plugged in my phone to charge and walked away for about an hour. When I came back the phone had turned off and I observed a hairline crack running across the home button. The phone was not dropped or even touched during this time. It honestly just spontaneously cracked. I know that the iPhone 7 had a similar issue but I was not able to find anyone that had experiences a similar issue with the iPhone 8.

I called Apple care and they advised that it would be anywhere from 99-600 dollars to have the home button replaced. Has anyone had a similar issue with their iPhone 8 or 8 plus? Thank you.

Here you go, I have changed some details but you get the jist. Also I cant share the email address as it pertains to my particular Apple case ID and mine has been closed. You will need to reply to the email you receive from the Apple rep.I hope this helps your case and I hope this gets more traction to get the wider issue looked at.

Hi,
Firstly, thank you for your great customer service and support yesterday and making an
exception to fix my iPhone 8 + screen due to the home button cracking itself.
However, this is not the end of the issue and I will list them below;

  • I went to Oobe in Wellington NZ yesterday and the guy advised based on the notes that Apple will fix the screen (home button included) free of charge however any other damage resulting from this issue they will not cover.
  • He asked me to wipe my phone but back it up first at home – I tried to update it then back it up but the phone, either hardware or software, has corrupted terribly and now it has been restored to factory with several issues to me personally.
    1. I lost ALL my data as it would not update and self-restored to factory settings – I had a lot of baby photos from January (we had a newborn on Jan 3rd) and I hadn’t backed up my phone as we moved into my in-laws house while we
build our house so my computer is in storage making it difficult to do my once a month back up to my PC. I also had some personal notes not backed up anywhere which is also painful. I never thought my 7 month old phone would break so quickly.
    2. The phone after restoring still will not boot up to the hello screen or anything else so I used an existing back up to restore to the phone and that did not work so it keeps looping through apple logo, bar loading and then black screen which suggest it could be something more than just the screen itself, it could be a hardware or software issue that you advised would not be covered as only
the screen replacement is covered by Apple.
  • I have logged a claim with my insurance company as I think this will not be resolved as easily as I think and this will cost me $200 excess as well as a penalty on my non-claims bonus. This is pending and I haven’t undertaken this course of action yet but the claim is lodged.
  • I did some further research on this issue and found many threads that replicate exactly what happened to me and my device. Reading the comments reiterated to me that I did not drop or bang my phone but this happened on its own via some faulty hardware or just pure bad design. Below are the threads I have looked at and most come from the Apple community forums on the Apple website. I will
restate; I did not drop the phone, I did not bump it against anything, I did not handle it roughly prior to the damage and I never have. I had used it with no issues, then 5 mins later charged it, then not long after I pulled out the lightning cable and placed into my pocket but had not checked the phone so it could have been damaged by then. I went to the bathroom and kitchen and after 5 mins I went to my desk pulled it out of my pocket and saw the damage. It sits in a Otterbox symmetry case with a screen protector on it – it is cared for as if it is one of my children and cost me $1449 NZD which I still have not fully paid for yet.
  • Here are the threads I mentioned and they all have a common theme – they were charging it and came back to see damage. Could it be that the charging is causing this issue:
    1. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8153835 - my phone looks exactly as the picture in this thread
    2. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8269914
    3. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8308437
    4. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8250804 - this is exactly my issue
    5. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8069340 - subject line refers to iPhone 7 but some comments mention iPhone 8
    6. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7742979 - also iphone 7 related but they use the same/similar hardware for the home
      button
    7. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8093709
    8. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8046417
There are many more of these re iPhone 7 on Apple’s website and from other websites but I think you get the point.
Im very frustrated that I can easily see a common theme here but Apple doesn’t – I have wasted time, energy and money on this issue and Apple hasn’t accepted liability they have only just made an “exception” for me where I see a bigger issue.
I am tempted to go to my commerce commission, Fair Go (NZ TV show that deals with consumers being ripped off) and our media outlets to vent my frustration and make this known to the wider community.
My main concern is that this may happen to other people and they go through the same process as me and get frustrated and potentially lose all their data (like I did which is causing me a massive headache and my new-borns pictures from his birth cannot be recovered ).
This shouldn’t happen and the response from Apple’s reps is unacceptable.
I will await your response before proceeding with what action I will take.
Please reply as quickly as you can as I need to make a decision soon.
Thanks.

You realise you need to pay for storage above 5gb right (or 10gb I forget). And my photos/video alone is 30gb. I know what youre saying and I admitted my fault but your comment doesnt help the main issue that some of their device's are faulty. This isn't my first day at the ball, Ive been using Apple products for 10+ years but I think you've totally missed the point - the home button broke itself.....let's talk about that not my inability to back up my device. Also, backing up every day is silly unless youve made major changes in the data itself. I can pick holes in your answer as well but this thread is about the home button and Apple not coming to the party for thise affected.

I had an still have an old 5s - best iphone Ive had. Only damage is from me not the device itself. Screen is small and battery ***** but the phone itself is very durable.

I did some more research and below are the Apple threads relating to this issue. There are not thousands of people reporting this but it looks like more than 20 and normally you'd assume that it would be about 10% people reporting on Apple forums so the actual number is probably much larger.

I've emailed Apple customer care this morning - let's see what they respond with.

I have had the same thing happen. My phone is 32 days old and the home button cracked. No other portion of the screen is cracked at all. It is stuck and is re-booting over and over again. (Every 3 min to be exact.) I can't access any material on it. I contacted apple. They said it is not covered under manufacturer warranty. First, they quoted me the whole price of the phone to fix it. I asked to speak with a supervisor. Second, they quoted me $399 and wanted the cost up front. I declined. Stuck with a non-working phone until I pay half of its original cost to fix it or wait 2 years in my phone contract. 😢

Hi All,

This just happend to me too. I just bought the iPhone 8plus 12 days ago and this morning I just found the home button cracked, the authorised reseller I bought the Phone from because in My country we do not have an official Apple store (MALTA) told me that this have a point of impact , which I am 100% sure that this is not true as my phone is always protected with a cover.

I am now seeing this community and will be speaking to them again as his looks like a common problem to the iPhone and I do not see it fair that I should pay for this cost.

How did you all proceed, did they change your phone or maybe arranged it for you?

Please Help 😟 😟

This just happened to me as well! I had been trying to figure out what could have possibly happened to my brand new phone opened just a few days ago, because as far as I knew, it had just been sitting on the counter a few feet away from me as I prepared a dish in the kitchen. I only noticed something out of the ordinary because I looked over and the apple logo was on the phone. I figured it was doing an update but it never changed. My phone was in a brand new Lifeproof case, which is not damaged at all. From reading the other comments here, it sounds like this is a manufacturer defect. Will be taking it to the Apple store to see what can be done. I did also notice that the home button was very warm to the touch when it was stuck on the boot screen. I hope Apple can quickly resolve this Issue.

Hello from Guam. Same situation happening to my wife's iPhone 8 plus. Phone was never dropped and there are no signs of physical damages on the outer parts of the phone. it is so sad the no one wants to help out with this situation because they say it's physical damage. Another sad this is that the personnel at our carrier said someone could have just got a chopstick and poked the home button. Another said that we could have stacked stuff on it. Realistically speaking who would do that to their new phone purchased on November 2017.

I have had my phone since November. I had my phone placed face up on the desk and came back to the screen white. It stated this way for several hours. I took it to Att after trying all the resets and while there noticed my home button cracked. They said I needed to contact apple for a warranty replacement. Contacted apple, and since it is "my fault" the home button cracked it's not covered under warranty and they could not give me a definite or even round about idea of cost to replace. After reading reviews, this seems like a common issue with the 8 and apple is not acknowledging a design flaw. I've had an iPhone since the 3G and they keep getting worse over time.

This has just happened to my iPhone 8 Plus too. I had been using it fine then put on the table for 10 minutes. Came back to check messages and the home button was cracked and continuously trying to reboot. It’s only 4 weeks old. Ever dropped or anything. Took it into Apple store this morning and they said they’ve never heard of this issue. I showed them this forum and pointed out that if this many people had same experience surely it’s an Apple problem. Saw the manager, asked how could this possibly happen. They replied it could have had a hair line crack and then if you pressed it it’s been made worse. They basically called me a liar. I’m so mad. They won’t do anything without me paying £169 for them to fix it. Surely something must be done about this issue.User uploaded file

I live in Central Asia (Uzbekistan), My friend recently brought me an iPhone 8 plus from NY, that’s my 4th apple device, and never experienced those kind of problems.

After an hour of charge noticed the same, we have power stabilization here installed through power system, so cant be overcharged :(

So now i have to fly all over so US $1000 and pay 300 plus bucks (if not eligible for Apple care, but still under warranty) to fix that? That’s does sound like

Same issue. The iphone 8 plus is only 3 months old, kept in a very protective case. I would like to add that mine is the white version with silver ring. The phone was not dropped, the case is perfect, the screen is perfect, as is the glass screen protector. It is only the home button that is cracked out of no apparent reason.

I will take it into the Apple Store, expecting that this issue is still too new to to be acknowledge as a design defect. However, I think it is. Whatever I pay to have it fixed for now, will surely be refunded one way or another once they acknowledge the issue.

Same thing happened to my brand new iphone 8. I bought it 7 days ago and did not hit it anywhere. It was on my car seat and I realized the apple logo on my phone and a crack on the home button. I live in a town 3 hours away from the nearest apple store. I called them and they did not believe me as I expected. They told, "PEOPLE CAN WRITE ANYTHING ON INTERNET" which I believe it absolutely rude and nonsense reply. After 30 min explaining the fact that excessive amount of pressure can not cause crack, "solid mechanics 101", he said that I have to send mt phone for them and they will check it. They are going to send a box for my claim which takes 15 days for them to receive my phone and assess it which is an absolute hassle for over 20 next days. I am not sure what they will say.User uploaded file

Guys!!! I have some really good news. So I’ve been following this thread since it happened to me April 20. Since then, I’ve gone to Apple twice, been turned away blaming me for physical damage, shed a few years and contemplated throwing this phone at a brick wall a few times lmao. But yesterday, I gave it one last shot before I attempted to have to pay a bulls**t amount of $250 to replace the screen on my 8 plus (3 months old at that). I decided to chat with an Apple advisor. I explained the whole situation, sent this thread, sent her pics of the home button and everything. Now her exact words after chatting and asking me questions like “was the phone warm when you found it in that condition” ect, she said after doing some digging apparently this issue is “apparent and recognized”. So yes this issue is recognized by Apple so guys do not give up. Be persistent. Chat with an advisor and explain the situation, she set me up with a repair, I now have a case created with all of her evidence toward my case. I’m going into Apple tomorrow to get this fixed, for FREE, once and for all! She said if they give me trouble to refer to my case number and ask for a manager. I will let you guys know what happens tomorrow!!! Keep being persistent and do not pay these people to fix this phone when it’s their fault. Good luck guys
