Apple We've Got a Problem - High Sierra Shut Down Issue.....

All,

I am noticing an increasing amount of threads related to the High Sierra random shut down issue. Here is a quick synopsis of my experience so far. Given ALL of the troubleshooting below, I think this is a software issue with High Sierra and we may have to wait for future updates in the hopes that the issue is fixed. I hope this helps for those who are having this issue:

Here is what I have done so far:

1) Performed multiple SMC/PMU resets

2) Restarted my Mac in safe mode and then restarted again in normal mode

3) Restarted Mac in "recovery mode" and performed a First Aid within Disk Utility (no issues)

4) Performed two Apple diagnostic tests by restarting in diagnostic mode (no issues)

5) Installed Apple Supplemental Update and 10.13.1

6) Reinstalled High Sierra over itself with the latest installer

After doing all this, I still had the shut down issue, so I contacted Apple Support and took my Mac to the Apple Store. The Genius also ran their own hardware/diagnostic tests and did other troubleshooting. The Genius determined there were no hardware or other issues. After doing all this, Apple helped me perform an erase and install of the entire operating system and we performed a fresh install of High Sierra. I was careful to restore necessary apps from a backup without restoring all setting.......AND......STILL HAVING THE SAME ISSUE!!

Bottom line is that I think we have a software issue with the new High Sierra. There are no hardware issues with my Mac and there were absolutely no issues before the High Sierra upgrade. After performing all of the above troubleshooting, I am thinking that we might have to wait for future software updates to see if this issue is resolved. I am hoping that Apple is looking at this because there were also a few other folks at the Genius Bar with me who had similar issues on High Sierra.

I am glad to try and provide some logs or other diagnostics for Apple if this would help, but this is getting increasingly frustrating and I hope we can find a fix soon.

I have the same problem too, and I am getting crazy. I spent money to buy another battery...indeed the technician did not know what else to do and he bought for me a battery and replaced it. Actually I was not in agreement with him, and, in fact, waste my money: the problem is still persistent. I cannot work without my mac and I am really upset.

Dear jayymacc YOU SOLVED MY PROBLEM!

That's incredible. I spent 200 dollars to change the battery, it was completely useless.

Thanks to your suggestion to disable the ethernet, I worked perfectly during all this night, and succeeded on doing the backup (before I always was on mode "Preparing backup", completely frozen also after having removed the BackupInProgress file).

NOW I DON'T HAVE THE ETHERNET WORKING (actually I never use it), but can move back to work!!!

Please Apple, solve this bug and give me back my ethernet.

----->>> Anybody needs a used but perfectly working battery with 200 cycles? ;-) #$@$!#$@$%@!!!!

One update: I worked with no problem with the mac for many days. Then I tried to install again the ethernet/thunderbolt NHI driver.

And booom: the device started switching off again.

This happened severl times.

Then I removed again the driver and the unit started working properly again.

So, I can say that this is repeatable.

I tried installing the latest sw release (last week) hoping that it would have helped, giving me back my ethernet working. But it didn't.

Hi jayymacc. I tried your fix - are we still supposed to be able to see the AppleThunderboltNHI.kext file in /Extensions? I still see it there even though Terminal said it was renamed to .kext.BAK. And my laptop is still freezing and shutting down. Did I not do it right? Or is this fix just not working for me... Thanks for any thoughts.

Hello Lyy17, if I make an "ls", this is what I get:

ls /System/Library/Extensions/AppleThunderbolt*

/System/Library/Extensions/AppleThunderboltDPAdapters.kext:

Contents

/System/Library/Extensions/AppleThunderboltEDMService.kext:

Contents

/System/Library/Extensions/AppleThunderboltIP.kext:

Contents

/System/Library/Extensions/AppleThunderboltNHI.kext.BAK:

Contents

/System/Library/Extensions/AppleThunderboltPCIAdapters.kext:

Contents

/System/Library/Extensions/AppleThunderboltUTDM.kext:

Contents

So, I think you should find the file/folder only with the .BAK extension.

Otherwise, probably, you did not disable it correctly.

ciao

Same problem with me for both 10.13.2 and the new 10.13.3 updates. Forces me to restore back to my last good 10.13.1 backup and at that point, EVERYTHING works perfectly. I'm not able to upgrade at all at this point. I also took iMac to Genius bar. Hmmmmm... Recommendation was to reinstall new OS and reload all of my APPS from day 1 manually. Yeah, right. Everything has always run perfectly even including 10.13.1 yet now "I" have a problem and also there as so many with posts on these forums having problems. We need HELP, not excuses... Really hacked at this point.

Yes, A very similar finding with my MacBook Pro. I held off on the upgrade. But its Feb 2018 now and how long has Apple had High Sierra out on the market.. For the first time running numerous Macs on all Mac software versions in my Agency ( well since our 1st SE in 1987 ) Having Random shutdowns and shutdowns while in sleep mode is quite a major flaw. Is there any way to get a Time Machine backup to go back to an earlier software installation. I'm expecting Apple to have made this a one way trip too.

If its any help I had the same problem with my mac mini since 2011. I bought some software - caffeine - which resolved the issue. Just upgraded to an Imac and I'm having the same issue even with the caffeine app running.

I wouldn't hold your hopes for apple to do anything since to my knowledge this problem has for me existed since 2011 ***

High Sierra bugs are still present even with the new 10.13.3 update. I accidentally upgraded to High Sierra last month and it's been nothing but problems. Previously was on El Capitan with no issues.

Main Issues:

• Sometimes iMac will not wake up from sleep/power saving mode. I have to pull the power cord and restart manually. I'm forced to either power down constantly or leave iMac running with screen saver on. Otherwise it's 50/50 I have to pull the cord to restart it.

• Occasionally freezes, lags and/or shuts down iMac all together while running Adobe programs (Photoshop esp.)

• Terminal won't recognize my password thus I can't make a USB boot drive to downgrade (smh)

I've tried everything from attempting to downgrade back to El Capitan (can't, see above on terminal), re-installing Adobe software, re-installing High Sierra, reset PRAM, safe mode, fixing permission errors, and creating new user/admin acct, etc. I even spoke to an Apple rep via phone and he basically suggested everything I already did. Nothing works. This update is ruining my editing bay. No happy Apple. Was going to upgrade to a new iMac but now I'm hesitant if the "latest and greatest" OS is so flawed.
