Apple TV 4K Random HDMI Signal Loss

Anyone have a similar issue they have solved? I originally had the issue of flicker that was solved on my LG C7 by changing motion to User set at 0, but an issue I am having is the signal from my ATV to the TV drops out randomly. Usually I can make it through a show, but a movie it will drop at least once. Audio seams to reset here and there too, but it comes right back with the little Dolby Vision logo on the TV flashing. To get the picture back I have to put the ATV to sleep and then turn it back on. If it wasn’t for the free 4K iTunes upgrades I think I would just be done with this thing. I have tried brand new cables too by the way.

I’m having the same issue as well. I have an LG 65” SJ8500 with Dolby Vision connected to the Apple TV 4K. I’ve tried turning the SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) settings off and on on both the Apple TV and LG and still have the same issue. Glad to find other people having this issue because I almost returned my TV thinking it was defective.

I bought the ultra high speed belki cable sold in the apple stores. It has made better but still some brief flicker. No loss of image but sound briefly brakes. Then the dolby vision logo comes and all continues. With other cables, I would have even complete loss of signal; no video, no sound. With the current cable the worse is brief flicker in signal or the inferior portion of the image disappears for a second and then comes back

This is a problem with AppleTV and needs to be solved. How could Roku, Amazon fire TV stick??!!

I have an LG 55” SK8000PUA and have the same problems described throughout this thread. I just update my tv to 4.10.6. I’m Not sure if this will fix the problem but I’m hopeful. I plan to call Apple tomorrow to diagnose more. I’ve tried new cables. Checked different frame rates and hrz. The problem lies with the actual tv and the Apple TV fighting for the proper video format. When working in tandem I think them confuse each other. My two cents.

You're in good company here. If you manage to get that perfect combination of TV to go with your ATV it just won't work. The only success I was able to achieve was using SDR and dropping the resolution. Even then I still had to reboot the ATV every time I wanted to use it. What good is that I ask you? I've temporarily gone back to my old ATV and am using 1080p until I can find time to contact Apple. I will update this thread once this happens. Faulty product if you ask me.

Hi all, I keep checking this thread periodically hoping that someone will announce an official fix. After almost a year, no luck. Fortunately for me, my workaround has been quite solid: my programmable remote reboots my ATV at the beginning of each viewing session. Takes a little longer to start up, but I never see the issue any more. This + good 4K cables . Horrible workaround, but it works for me.

Hello, I wish I was as lucky as you!

Using the Belkin Ultra High-Speed 4K HDMI Cable (2m) on Apple TV 4K running tvOS 12 with LG OLED 55C8 has not solved the issue for me.

I have a case number with AppleCare too and am awaiting a response from Engineering.

Both workarounds work:

- Turning off Dolby Vision and using HDR10

- Using 4K Dolby Vision at 30Hz

But these totally defeat the purpose of owning these products.

I have the same issue with my Apple TV 4K and LG C7.

I had the issue with a cheapo HDMI cable from the start, so I bought a new, 3 foot "4K" rated cable, and the issue was solved.

I decided to run my cables in-wall and mount the TV. So I bought the 10 foot version of the same 4K cable.

Now, I'm back to intermittent issues.

Turning off Dolby Vision, lowering the refresh rate, etc aren't really viable fixes, otherwise I might as well go back to my 1080p plasma.

I'm on tvOS 12 now, but was on 11. No change.

My ATV 4K now refuses to output anything at all. Even my old standby of connecting it to my Sony HD TV has failed me. I finally cracked and called Apple. They methodically went through everything I'd already tried whilst I gritted my teeth. I nearly lost it when he told me to connect the ATV to my Mac via its service port GRRR. Then he tried Ethernet ***. When that didn't work duh I was told I'd need an HDMI to Ethernet cable. Just nip down to your local shop he says. Should only cost you $30. I said No. So now I have to waste an afternoon going to the local Apple store. Hay, the ATV 4K is a pos.

Like everyone else… I had the problem for nearly a year where my Apple TV 4K would loose connection with my LG C7 Oled 65 inch and then I need to restart my Apple TV 4k. I tried a number of things like everyone else and had no luck although the problem has seemingly gotten worse since I switched to TVOS 12. I use to experience the problem every 2 to 3 days but since I switched to tvOS 12 I experience the issue about once a day. I had tested my old Amazon HDMI high speed cable using the test provided in the settings menu and it always indicated it was working fine on tvOS 11. However, on tvOS 12 it does indicate connectivity issues. Not sure if they tweaked the test in tvOS 12. So, I finally decided to go bite the bullet and try the recommended Belkin cable ( in the 2 meter version) . It has only been a few days but so far so good. I also noticed that this cable passes the HDMI cable test in tvOS 12 where my old cable did not. Moral of the story… It seems to have solved the problem. We shall see. Sidenote, make sure to run the HDMI cable test. Don’t just switch back-and-forth between 4K HDR and 4K Dolby Vision to see if the cable shows a problem. I think there is some test result caching going on which seems to be resolved when you run the official HDMI cable test. Good luck

So previously I had high speed certified Qualgear QG-PCBL-HD20 cables, and was having this problem. I gave up and purchased QED performance certified cables. No problems since. This seems really fussy or there are loads of rubbish cables out there. If this is a cable issue I have lost all faith the the HDMI certification programme.

Over on AVSForum there are about 20 users of ATV4k and sony projectors who all get random blackouts on HDR titles since ‘upgrading’ to tvos12. Both Sony and Apple resort to the tired old ‘blame it on the cable’, even though all twenty of these systems (and cables!) worked great before the ‘upgrade’.

Bad titles include Ocean’s 8 (iTunes Store) and First They Killed My Fater (Netflix).

For the record my 4K Oppo BluRay player has gone Through several firmware updates without ever having trouble playing a title, through the same cable on the same projector.

Apple should open up the iTunes Store to competent third party hardware vendors.

Hi, I posted earlier re. this issue. For me the blackouts just got worse and worse. There was a stage where I could plug the device into an old HD TV and could get the device to start operating again. But that soon stopped working too. So my ATV 4K became inoperable. I talked to Apple and had the device tested by them. It was finally replaced under warranty. The new device is working great even after upgrade to TVOS 12. I reckon there maybe a batch of ATV with a hardware fault. If you can, get yours replaced.
