Trying to install Firefox HELP PLEASE!!!!!

I downloaded Firefox, but the disk image won't open. It says it cannot mount. Do I need to install Mozilla, too? Why won't it work. I am going crazy. Please help. Thanks

I have tried downloading Firefox 10 times from macupdate, versiontracker and the Firefox site. Each time, the disk image appears after the download. the download is quick and then it shows it "preparing the disk image for a few minutes. then the download box says "mounting failed". When I click on the image to open it, it won't open and an error message comes up that says, "Firefox 2.0.0.1.dmg Device not configured"

I am going out of my mind with this! Then I drag the disk image to the trash, empty the trash, and try again. Same thing. Any ideas?

I don't have Mozilla and I don't know how to re-set Safari or empty the cache. Are there any problems with doing either of these things if you explain to me how to do them?

The first time I tried downloading Firefox, it took a long time, maybe 20 minutes, and all the other times, it only took a minute or so. Are there any parts of the download that aren't being removed from my computer when I put each failed download in the trash?

Ohhhh! this is never going to work. I'm so frustrated.

For Safari, resetting and cache clearing is available in the menu bar, under "Safari". There's no need to install Mozilla.

I think the problem is that you have a slow connection, based on the 20 minutes. Somehow the transfer got messed up, packets got dropped. I would try resetting Safari and clearing the cache first. If that doesn't work, you might need a faster connection. I remember someone on this forum had this problem before, and at the end it was because of the connection.

I have a fast Comcast connection. The first time the download was slow, but it wouldn't open. The next 11 attempts to downloaded it did it fast. Either way it didn't open and when I click on it, it flashes, but won't open. the download box says "mounting failed".

What about "opening with diskmounting default " option? What is that? Is there a problem with clearing the Safari cache? I think I've read that it can be a problem. And what is "re-seting Safari"?And is this the solution anyway? There must be an answer. All my other downloads work great. Is there any other browser beside Firefox you might recommend? I need an alternate browser as Safari won't open some stuff I need.

Sorry I'm so dumb about this. Thanks.

I think there is a problem with the first download, the .dmg file was corrupted. Since it's corrupted it could not be mounted. Most (all?) web browsers keep a cache of what was downloaded, so if the stuff is needed again, it can immediately retrieve from the cache, improving response time. If the corrupted file is still in the cache, then subsequent "downloads" will still mean you're still getting the corrupted file from the cache. Emptying the cache will force the browser to actually attempt the download again.

Camino is the Mac version of Mozilla, but I don't quite like it, I stick to Firefox. Like you, there are some things that Safari could not do for me.

Ethanee. I really appreciate you're help. I emptied the Safari cache and tried downloading again (this time from MacUpdate). Same thing. In the download window, the download happens in a minute, and then it spends about 2 minutes more "preparing the disk", and then tells me "mounting failed". I really need to get this download accomplished. Any more ideas?

When I click on the disk image after download, it flashes, but doesn't open. If I right click on it, I get the option "open with diskimagemounter (default)" What is this, and should I try it? Maybe the download doesn't know what to open in?

Am I sounding dumber and dumber?

That's the correct application to mount the .dmg. By default diskimagemounter is called when you double-click on the file. Do you have problems mounting other .dmg files?

Nope.

Ethanee. I just looked at the Firefox chat to see if there was anything relevant. Here's the answer to that question:

click-hold and Get Info on the dmg (or Cmd/I). You should have DiskImageMounter.app in the "open with" in the box of Get Info.

If not, browse to find it (it will be in Applications>Utilities>Installer.app) and select it, and also click "Use this application to open all documents like this".

That should do it. For some reason your OS/X doesn't have Installer as the default app to open dmg files.

should I try downloading again and then right click the disk image (even though the download says the mounting failed) and try "open with diskimagemounter"? Is this the same thing mentioned above?

Thanks again from this dumb damsel in distress!

I think when you double-click on the file, it is already using diskimagemounter to try and open it. So yeah, it's the same thing if you use right-click, Open With/DiskImageMounter (default).

I would definitely try the steps in the previous post though : )

I shut down my MBP and restarted it about an hour later. Tried the Firefox download again. It still won't open, but it seems to have mounted all right. It asked me to accept terms, and a window opened with the Firefox logo. but it says it has 0 MB in it and it seems to be my Finder window. I took some screen shots, but don't know how to post them.

Even though I got this far, it still won't open.

Also, I don't have enough experience to do what the post above recommended. I don't understand it.

Please, help as I have work to finish tonight and must have another browser, preferably Firefox.

THANKS
