Apple Carplay stopped working Accord 2018

Looking for assistance:

I have a 2018 honda accord. I have been driving it for a mere 2 weeks. Apple carplay was working wonderfully for 2 weeks until yesterday. No changes to the phone, just stopped working. Now I cannot get it working. I have tried the following:

Change Cable

Change USB port

Update OS (now 11.1.1)

Reset Network settings

Disabled all restrictions

iCloud backup performed

Phone model is 7 Plus. The car recognizes the phone, works in USB mode as well as bluetooth mode. In the smartphone settings on the car itself, it has the phone as enabled. I click connect and it just says cannot connect, no smartphone device detected.

I'm really at a loss here. This should be plug and play but it is most definitely not.

I took my 2018 Honda Accord Sport 2.0T to the service center so they can look at the Apple CarPlay issues and on pickup, they mentioned that there were a bunch of people on different Honda car models having the exact same issue with CarPlay. Apparently Honda is aware of the issue as it is widely known and they are currently working on a software update. Honda is instructing their techs to do a master reset on the car. Which is what they did to mine and it fixed the issues temporarily. The Honda rep told me the issue has something to do with the iPhone's inbuilt security mechanisms as it is limiting functionality with CarPlay. I was also told NOT to connect the iPhone cable directly to the infotainment's USB port UNLESS you were going to use Apple CarPlay immediately after it pops up, otherwise the application would sit there waiting for it to be activated and if it doesn't it would eventually crash and a master reset would be required. Apparently it's also helpful if you don't leave the cable connected unless you're using it. I took the car to the service center for the CarPlay issues on a Monday, got the car back on Tuesday afternoon and followed all the instructions to the T, CarPlay only worked for 1 week before it crashed again. Now it is not working at all. Very frustration issue and I doubt anything will change unless more and more people report this to Apple.

I see some users were able to fix the issue by changing the background colors on their system which would result in a unit reset. Does anyone know if the Honda Accord also has this option? I could not find it.

FWIW, I have used my Apple CarPlay very nearly daily for four months now (and most days, at least twice a day) and never had the issue of CarPlay not starting up until yesterday.

I've also "crashed" the unit a few times month by using the iPhone (instead of the CarPlay console) so I'm sure there are bugs but overall, I'm very happy with the performance.

As far changing the background on the unit for 2018 Honda Accord Sport, Google came up with several possibilities (Google for: change background 2018 Honda Accord Sport)

I bought a 2018 CRV this week and had the same issue, the screen kept stating no device was connected although it was. I tried switching out the lightning cable and using different ports, restarted my phone. Tried with car on and in accessory mode. I have a iphone SE with ios 11.0. Randomly saw online somewhere on a forum to go under "Settings"

->"Restrictions" and after typing in passcode, realized the toggle for CarPlay was not highlighted to allow it to run on my iphone. After I switched the toggle to allow CarPlay to run, I immediately got instructions on the iphone to set up CarPlay, and on the display screen in the CRV, the CarPlay logo appeared on the home screen. Fortunately, it was an easy fix and I am hoping no other problems arise. Maybe try this on your phone to see if it works?

Hi, I just got my car this last Friday and my carplay isnt working on my 2018 Honda Accord. Honda dealership said its an update issue. Your post is from January and the dealership said they are working on this issue with carplay. They make it seem its getting fixed soon. Has your carplay kept working after the hard reset? Any suggestions for me? Also have you gotten any update or changes to your car from apple or honda? Thanks for your time

I first encountered the problem perhaps a month ago, called into Honda InCar tech support, was told that they were aware of the problem and they suggested that a car Data Reset might help, which it did. Soon there after I did the Apple iOS iPhone 8+ update to iOS 11.2.6 and it has seemed "better" since then. Until yesterday I could restore CarPlay function by some combination of power cycling the car, the phone or doing a Power Reset on the phone, but today I had to Data Reset the phone to restore operation. Today I did an Audio System Software Update check on the car and was told there was no update. From the discussion here it seems that Honda has not released any kind of fix (although intuitively that seems likely to be necessary).

Hi Annie!

I recently updated my iPhone X to the newest software and haven’t had any issues since. Also when I get into the car I immediately plug my phone in and then start the car.... but there have been instances where I start the car and then plug in and no problems. This is working so far whether iTunes, Amazon Music, or Spotify are the apps in use for music at the time the CarPlay begins. Hope this helps!

It happened to me too with my 2018 Honda Accord. Within 2 weeks of using CarPlay, it disconnected and stated that it is unable to connect to CarPlay. I tried everything on my phone end. Even tried restarting as new and issue persists. I honestly don’t think it’s Apple. I also tried resetting the infotainment to factory settings and it worked for about 2 more weeks and literally just now it happened again and I found this thread to see if anybody else is having this issue. Very disappointing.

Apple is clearly aware a problem exists. As a system engineer and one who worked at Apple (albeit many years ago) intuitively I think the fix will require a software update from Honda. CarPlay is a pretty sophisticated, real-time, multi-computer application, with two applications (phone and car audio) doing things that are quite different from their initial design (e.g., the original iPhone was very much a single tasking system). I'm quite sure Apple understands this complexity and has the test-rigs and instrumentation to test the combined system. I'm less confident that Honda does but there is enough evidence (keep contacting your Honda dealer and Honda phone Tech Support when you have problems) to make it clear they have to find and fix it.

Apparently my 2017 Civic was late to this party, although I switched from Android to Apple recently.

My iPhone connection failed after restarting the car while the phone was connected and previously working fine.

The infortainment reset allowed me to reconnect my phone successfully. I was surprised that other settings such as FM radio presets were retained. The process is a bit scary because after the car reports that the reset has completed, it takes a couple minutes for anything to display. I restarted the car during that interval. I don't know if that was helpful, harmful or pointless.

The Honda infortainment system reset is accompished with the following menu sequence:

1. Home

2. Settings

3. System

4. Scroll right to tab "Others" and scroll down or scroll down repeatedly from tab "All".

5. Factory Data Reset

6. Approve several times

7. Get the "all done" message.

8. Wait

Note that my old Android phone continued to work with it's old cable when two iPhones failed with multiiple cables. That pointed very clearly to a software problem, although there may be some hardware distinctions between the way the car supports Android and Apple. Previously, I often had intermittant failures of the Android phone to connect. Restarting the phone and/or car resolved them.

I have iPhone & and I'm running 11.1.2. I'm driving 2017 Honda Civic.

I did something pretty minor. I reset the Honda infotainment. That didn't fix it.

Then I went to my phone and turned off all restrictions (Settings>General>Restrictions>Disable Restrictions). Worked like a charm!!! I will have the restrictions turned off ONLY while I'm driving the car, until they come out with a better solution.

I did the same and I’m back to the CarPlay not connecting. I’ve tried everything from resetting my phone to turning off my car first before disconnecting my phone from my car. Nothing works! It’s all been temporary for me. I did a reset on my car and phone and car play only lasted two weeks :( I have a Honda Accord 2018 anyone found any solutions that are not temporary.
