Apple Carplay stopped working Accord 2018

Looking for assistance:

I have a 2018 honda accord. I have been driving it for a mere 2 weeks. Apple carplay was working wonderfully for 2 weeks until yesterday. No changes to the phone, just stopped working. Now I cannot get it working. I have tried the following:

Change Cable

Change USB port

Update OS (now 11.1.1)

Reset Network settings

Disabled all restrictions

iCloud backup performed

Phone model is 7 Plus. The car recognizes the phone, works in USB mode as well as bluetooth mode. In the smartphone settings on the car itself, it has the phone as enabled. I click connect and it just says cannot connect, no smartphone device detected.

I'm really at a loss here. This should be plug and play but it is most definitely not.

You shouldn't need a Code to unlock your head unit unless you replaced it. When you power it on after the reset it will ask you to hold the power button to activate the radio (Uses car ECU) for the code. The only thing I can think of is Honda Replaced your head unit and didn't update the ECU (if possible). here is the site to retrieve your radio code https://radio-navicode.honda.com/

I have not yet received a software update for my 2018 accord and the problems still occur but at a diminished level. From time to time the audio headset has rebooted (dark screen for a minute). From time to time the iPhone connection is lost but reestablishes after disconnection and reconnection of the USB cable. I have not had to do a system reset after the first two (now some time ago). I think that the most recent iPhone system updates have probably helped somewhat (my intuition). It is also useful not to have a million apps running on the iPhone when used with CarPlay (although I don't explicitly kill apps before driving).

Great info. Thanks so much. Your description of current CarPlay behavior in your Accord is exactly what I'm experiencing in my CRV. I think you may be right about the latest iOS update being helpful. I updated my 7+ last week and connectivity issues are not as frequent now. Thanks for the tip on the apps. I try to keep those to a minimum. I added Audible app to CarPlay and noticed that it doesn't reliably run like my main 3 apps of Spotify, AppleMusic and Messaging. I'll delete the Audible, as I was just "test driving" it and am not a paid subscriber. Thanks again for your prompt reply. Guess I'll just live with CarPlay issue until Apple and/or auto mfr's come up with resolution.

I'm pleased you found it useful. Years ago I was a systems guy and even worked for Apple for a while (during the bad old days, unfortunately). CarPlay is a complex system and demands that both phone and car do un-natural things (the iPhone was designed at the beginning to do one thing at one time only; multi-tasking was a much later edition). CarPlay is a distributed computer system and all of those are intrinsically complex. I have confidence that Apple understands the issues and has the ability test the implementations. Without denigrating Honda in any way, I'm willing to bet that their software teams aren't as strong as Apple's, and perhaps more importantly, something like CarPlay is very foreign as a car technology and the business and engineering management level (all of which has to work in the field for 10 years so has an entirely different development and change cadence). I do think that CarPlay is important to Honda and that they will make their part better over time. I await with some eagerness an audio headend software update.

After reading your latest reply, I can now rest easy. Sharing your past experience and knowledge of this type of technology clarifies the entire issue for me. I really appreciate that. I'm 69 and have been a tech nerd since I was a kid in the 50's and tore apart our old Western Electric rotary phone, just to figure out how it worked. I was spanked and yelled at for doing that, but it was worth it. The Bell repairman gave me a lesson in telephone technology when he came out to repair the phone. lol.

Fast forward to 2018 and I'm just blown away by today's technology. Believe me, I can appreciate the intensive R&D that goes into these devices and the software that runs them. You can probably share some really interesting stories about those early days at Apple. Sounds like you were there to experience growing pains. As for Honda, I still view them and Toyota as having set the benchmark for automotive quality. Apple is unique. They're just "up there" when it comes to brainpower. Their products are well thought out with such attention to even the minutest detail. Very innovative folks.

I wasn't surprised to see one guy posting on a YouTube vid regarding CarPlay, emphasizing that he wasn't going to "put up with this bs". He says that he's already contacted Honda Corporate about returning his Honda and demanding a full refund for the car since CarPlay doesn't work. That's interesting. While I was doing car research, I stumbled onto people who said they wouldn't buy a car if it didn't have CarPlay. I would never base my decision to buy a $30k car on whether or not it was equipped with the proper head unit. Let me stop, as I'm getting off topic.

Thanks again. Enjoy your Accord!

I'm with you. Wouldn't buy a car without CarPlay (smarter place for nav and personal entertainment than any car system). And I agree that Honda does an excellent job integrating a lot of complex technology into a very usable car system. Not surprisingly I think Apple is better and human-usable system design but that said I think Honda does well compared to other companies who also aren't Apple.

BTW, we're more or less peers -- the only difference is that I've been in computer-based businesses for all my life having started un-naturally early.

LOL....I won't ask your age, but I'm "massively" impressed by anyone in computer/computer-based profession. I had to chuckle when I read your comment regarding your profession. When I was in the military back in 1968, one of my fellow Marines had a background in computers. That had nothing to do with his military occupation, but our superiors knew that he was proficient in computer work. Consequently, he voluntarily worked every Saturday morning, helping with programming, I believe. Get this. The computer was so large, that it was housed inside of an aircraft hangar. I tagged along one Saturday, just to see what these "computers" were all about. All I recall, is that the machine was huge and I had no clue what he was doing, but the computer people were very happy with him. My friend had a degree in business, but opined that computer technology would evolve over the years and that we might even see one in our personal lives. He had an interest in computers, so I have no doubt that he pursued a career in that field after leaving the service. Little did I know at the time, that I'd be communicating with someone 50 yrs later and casually discussing "CarPlay" and Honda. LOL.

Btw, I took delivery of my CRV this past November. I've been using CarPlay since day one. This morning, I decided to spend some time in the car learning the standard built-in bluetooth, wi-fi, etc. as an alternative to CarPlay just in case. After learning and using the system for about an hour, I now realize just how great CarPlay is. Didn't realize how spoiled I am with CarPlay. I'll tolerate its quirkiness until a resolution is found.

I have a new Honda 2018 CR-V. Apple car ply does not work. Blue tooth connection works fine. When apple car play is selected from settings, “No Apple CarPlay device is connected” message shows up. The smart phone labeled port is working and phone is charging.

Tried Hard reset on the car. Powered off and on iphone. Disconnecred apple watch. Nothing works. One of my reason to get this CRV model is apple carplay. Now what? Any help appreciated.

I'm not sure what you mean by a Hard Reset. What seems to work for others is the Factory Data reset that can be done through the audio-head. Other helpful items seem to be being up to date on iPhone IOS updates, and not having an excessive number of programs running on the iPhone. I have an iPhone 8 -- probably 7 or better would help with performance. Aside from that, I'm not I've heard of anyone here who can't get it going again. In my case the resets hav become less frequent although I'm still expecting a software update from Honda to really clear it up. Good luck.

THERE IS FINALLY A SOFTWARE UPDATE FOR THE ACCORD 2018 AUDIO SYSTEM.

You can get to it from the home page of the Audio system (select "System Updates" from the full set of apps). You need to either connect your car to a local Wi-Fi service or do the update via USB memory (which seems cumbersome). I used my iPhone's HotSpot capabilities. The update is 35MB (small by iPhone app update standards).

I've been unable to find anything written by Honda about what the Update addresses but I'm guessing CarPlay is part of it. I did the update very recently and so far think CarPlay operation is better (quicker) and I haven't had any problems yet (fingers crossed). I would also recommend everyone to bring their iPhone up to current IOS revision level (do any available System Update from iPhone settings).

Thanks for info on the Honda software update. Updated my 2018 Honda Accord last night and it looked promising but Honda screen frozen after 2 songs using Itunes through Apple CarPlay. Very frustrating. I’m using a new iPhone 8 with lastest IOS 11.3.1. Bought the car less than 2 months ago and Apple CarPlay has rarely worked correctly. It froze up on day one. I have reset the Apple CarPlay so many times that I’ve lost track. Bringing car back to the dealer again (had it there less than 2 weeks ago for the same problem) to see if they can figure this out. Of course like others, Apple CarPlay was a big deciding factor in buying this new car. Unbelievable. Please keep any new suggestions coming. I’ve tried all the ones listed already to no avail.
