I hope when they say new they really mean new and not refurbished. I will have mine checked at Apple Store.
I know this is an older thread, but in case you’re still having trouble:
I dealt with this for a year!!!! Super annoying and couldn’t wait until it was time for a new phone. My daughter had the same issue. She took her screen protector off (one of the harder ones, not just a film that goes over), problem solved! So, I tried it, thinking there was no way that was it...problem solved! My phone hasn’t done this in 4 days! I was having trouble all day everyday. The phone would even call other people while I was on a call. I hated it! Anyway, apparently the screen protector was causing issues with the screen sensitivity. Hope this helps!
Hi
They don't give you a replacement iPhone in a retail box because you already have the charger / headphones.
Cheers

Corretc, this is the explanation given to me and it makes sense
TOTALLY feel the same .
Consider trying the following options:
1) Go to Settings>General>Accessibility>Touch Accommodations, and adjust the settings to how you like.
2) Press and hold the power button and the home button at the same time. After about ten seconds, your phone will turn off. Make sure to continue holding both buttons until the Apple logo appears. Then release the buttons.
Let me know if this helped. Good luck!
I had the same issue with my 2 week old iPhone X and the only solution was taking it to apple and having the screen replaced, since it was still under warranty I paid nothing. (Just a whole Sunday without my phone while the repairs finished)
-pro tip, don’t set an appointment with apple a local store, just be one of the first ones to be outside the store when it opens and your issue should be resolved that day. Good luck!!
Me too; It’s horrible. It dials 911, and all various contacts without contacts being open or touching screen at all. Apps open without my intent, it has even dialed FB messenger video calls with my friends while carrying it lightly in my hand or pocket and not touching the screen. Have toggled all the switches and set 3D touch to firmest.
Same issue on my iPhone X as well (i.e. erratic touch screen behavior). I believe I have remedied the problem and the "fix" is going to sound a bit hokey, but here it goes...
[1] remove your phone cover
[2] reboot phone
[3] test phone (i.e. use multiple apps, switch between apps, scroll up and down, etc.)
[4] if it works, then replace your phone cover
[5] test phone again
If this works for others, then I would speculate that the edge of cases that wrap around to the front of the phone were causing the phone to interpret erratic touching around the perimeter of the screen. Since this behavior is recent, it would imply that Apple made changes to touch screen settings in one of their recent iOS updates.
Iphone X touchscreen is extremely sensitive.
