iTunes 12.7.2 CD Burning Issues

On my Windows 10 PC that hosts my primary iTunes music collection (70000+ songs) just completed the upgrade to the latest iTunes release (shows 12.7.2.58 as the version) via the Apple Software Update process.

After completing the upgrade I attempted to burn the playlists for 4 new classical albums (all MP3 downloads) to CD-R media. The CD burning process for all 4 albums failed with the following error message: "The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred. (0x80004005)".

In each instance the albums played without issue when listening to them via iTunes (and my computer speakers).

Thinking that this may be an issue with iTunes 12.7.2 I logged on to another computer with an iTunes instance that had not been upgraded (the iTunes version on the other PC is 12.7.1.14). I copied the MP3 files for all 4 albums to that iTunes instance and then created playlists for each album. Was able to burn the playlists for all 4 albums to CD media with NO errors.

I will also note that with iTunes 12.7.2.58 I was able to burn one playlist to CD successfully but the burning process was painfully slow (4-5 times slower than normal).

Based on these results it appears to me that iTunes 12.7.2 has some significant bugs/issues relating to burning playlists to CD media.

Rolling back to iTunes 12.7.1.14 may be easier than transferring your playlists into Windows Media Player.

Uninstall iTunes then download and install one of the following as appropriate:

An alternative suggestion is to limit the burn speed to something slower than you would normally use.

Reports suggest Apple are aware of the issue but there is no ETA for a new build.

I also had this issue today when I tried to burn a copy of a playlist. I installed the latest iTunes update yesterday(12-12-17). It copied first song and then stopped, ejected disk, siting error 0X80004005. I tried several disks thinking it was problem with my disks. After a Google search for this error I came across reports that others are having the same problem after installing the latest update. I did a system restore on my Dell laptop to 12-11-17. This eliminated the recent update and iTunes now works correctly and I am able to burn disks again.

There's no iTunes function/feature that allows you to revert to a previous version of the software, but previous versions can be found online. Here are a couple sources:

https://filehippo.com/download_itunes/history/

http://www.oldversion.com/windows/itunes/

You'll have to completely uninstall iTunes and re-install with your version of choice. Admittedly, I don't fully comprehend the implications of doing this, (i.e. there may be associated risks or problems that I'm not aware of), so back up your library and proceed with caution.

Edit: I'm having the same problem with burning. I think my CD body count is up to 11 after trying everything I could to fix or work around the problem myself. I also called tech support and got nowhere with them. If I can't figure out a convenient way to burn with WMP, I will probably be downgrading to a previous version of iTunes.

Go to your control panel and uninstall your version of itunes (which is the 12.7.2 version). Once it is uninstalled, shut down your computer and re-boot it. Go to this site https://filehippo.com/download_itunes/history/ and click on the download version you want. It gives you many choices of previous itunes versions. I selected version 12.7.1 (the previous version that worked for me). Just click on the download, open it when prompted, and let it install. My computer told me the download was safe (good news!). It concluded the installation, was fast and easy, and I opened itunes with all my folders and music intact. I have burned a disk with no error message. The disk was totally fine, and the playlist length issue was also not a problem. CHEERS AND GOOD LUCK! 🙂

Pfft...I came here with the same issue and as I am reading all of the posts, I get an update message asking to install 12.7.2.

I am currently running 12.7.2.58. Has anyone updated to the 'new' 12.7.2?

Judging from other posts the issue isn't fixed in 12.7.2.60. Try reinstalling iTunes 12.7.1.14. See the iTunes installers section of Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for download links and roll back instructions for reverting your database if needed.

I got the error after upgrading from ver 12.4.3.1 to 12.7.2.x (on 12/15/17) and could no longer successfully burn a CD from iTunes.

The exact error I saw is: The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error has occurred. (0x80004005)

My system is Windows 7 Ultimate SP1.

The burn would get about 1/4 through when I got the error and the cd tray would slide out.

When I re-inserted the CD, I saw the complete list of tracks that I had wanted to burn, but only a few of them would actually play.

If you don't want to read this entire post, I'll summarize:

You need to un-install iTunes 12.7.2.x, clean your Windows registry of all iTunes entries (use Regedit or a 3rd party editor such as Registrar Registry Manager - available free for home users.

Then you need to remove your iTunes library files from the <username>\My Music\iTunes folder. I recommend moving it rather than deleting it.

Older versions of iTunes will not be able to load a library once it has been updated to a newer version of iTunes.

Once you do all of that, you can install the older version of iTunes. But be prepared to re-build your music library.

It appears that some of the song info is saved somewhere other than in the iTunes Library.itl file, but some of it will be lost.

Also, when you re-install the older version of iTunes, un-check the box to automatically download new versions. That way, you won't get the constant reminder that a newer version of iTunes is available.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------

My first thought was that my CD burner was toast. It has been acting up sometimes, but had never refused to burn a CD.

Then I Googled and found this thread. So I realized I would need to roll-back my latest iTunes upgrade.

That isn't as easy as it may seem, even though previous versions of iTunes are readily available for download.

First, the older iTunes installer will balk and quit the install if you already have a newer version installed. Not surprising.

So I un-installed iTunes through Windows 7 Programs and Features. The install of iTunes ver 12.4.3.1 started, but after it got maybe halfway through, it suddenly "rolled-back" the install and quit, leaving me with no iTunes.

I suspected that I needed to remove all the registry entries for iTunes, so that is what I did, using "Registrar Registry Manager", which I have been using for many years and find it to be completely reliable if you know what you are doing in the Windows registry.

After clearing out all the iTunes registry entries, I was able to install iTunes 12.4.3.1. But alas! when I tried to run iTunes, I got a pop-up error message telling me that it could not read the iTunes library file "iTunes Library.itl", which is located in your <username>\My Music\iTunes folder.

I was finally able to install and run iTunes ver 12.4.3.1 by re-locating (not deleting) my iTunes library from the aformentioned location, leaving nothing there for iTunes to see when it loaded.

The problem with that is you need to re-build your iTunes library. Mine is not located in the default location, so I needed to browse to the folder where I have it.

Then I needed to add in all my previously downloaded tracks, else I would have needed to re-download all of them from the cloud - which isn't such a bad thing if you don't have too many downloads.

Finally, there is the issue of losing your track info. Info like rating, volume level, and I use the comments box to enter the status of the tracks I am burning to CD. That way I can create a smart playlist to include only the tracks I want to burn, and after they have been burned, I change that comment to something other than the text used in the criteria for the smart playlist.

Interesting thing is that, while I found that many of the tracks I had tagged (using the comments field) for burning to CD were no longer in the smart playlist (which I needed to re-create of course), but some were there.

Investigating I found that while the song listing did not show the text "burn" which I used to tag a track for burning to CD; if I opened song info, the word "burn" was there in the comments. Simply saving the song info again caused the comments to show up in the song list, and appear in the smart playlist.

Unfortunately, I needed to do this for each and every song one at a time. When I tried highlighting a selection of songs, the process did not work. So it was time consuming, but easier than going through all of my burned CD's and finding the songs I purchased on iTunes. I do have a secondary database that helps me in this respect, but I suspect that many iTunes users do not keep a separate music database.

So I will be waiting along with the rest of you for a fix. But I wouldn't be too quick to upgrade again - unless you are absolutely certain that the bug has been fixed.

I did a complete uninstall of itunes and all its components then rebooted and then clean installed not an very older version but just the previous version of Itunes 12.7.1.14 that I knew worked and I am able to burn again and dont have any other apparent issues. I wonder if your issues are a result of not cleaning out ALL itunes folders and /or loading a much older version.

Dont hold your breath waiting for apple to respond, it may take them a while. I had the same burning issue as y'all on my win 7 pc. The latest itunes update appears to be the issue. I did a complete uninstall of the recently updated Itunes after backing it up. Made sure I had cleaned out all residual files then reinstalled Itunes 12.7.1.14 and presto problem solved. Happily burning again with no problem. One lady I saw posted here that instead of uninstalling itunes she used recovery to roll her pc back to a state before the offending itunes update and achieved the same results.

No, you uninstall the current version of the application and other Apple software components, then reinstall the older version of iTunes. You leave the library alone and the older version, in this particular case, will be happy to read the library. If you were to revert to an even older version of iTunes you might need to restore a backup copy of the database from the Previous iTunes Libraries folder, but that isn't necessary with 12.7.2. > 12.7.1.

Uninstall iTunes. Download and install one of the following as appropriate:

Thanks to Ridley1555 we know it isn't necessary to uninstall the other components in this instance, nor do you need to roll back your database.

I've been having exactly the same problem. I completely rebuilt my PC with a clean install of Windows 10. Having downloaded and installed the latest version 12.7.2.60 of iTunes and then having downloaded from the cloud the playlist I wanted to burn to CD, when I started the burn it began burning the first track and then gave me this "unknown error" message and ejected my CD. As other users have discovered, the CD-R then had to be binned because it was no longer blank and could not be reused.

Having repeated this several times on all 3 of my DVD drives with the same annoying result, I downloaded and installed the Switch Sound File Converter and the Express Burn Disc Burning utility programs from NCH Software (these utilities are free for personal home use). Using the NCH Switch utility I converted my selected .m4a files to .wav format. I then used the NCH Express Burn utility to create my audio CD. This worked perfectly, proving that my hardware and Windows driver software is all functioning correctly. I believe this proves that the problem lies with the new iTunes version 12.7.2.60 from Apple.

Dec 21, 2017 3:22 PM in response to mclardyd

latest update to the above:

I uninstalled iTunes version 12.7.2.60 and installed iTunes version 12.6.2.20 for which I had luckily kept an old download. This completely solved the CD burning problem.

Note, however, that to make this work I first had to delete the iTunes folder from Music on my hard drive because the older version of iTunes was incompatible with the newer iTunes Library.itl file. So yes I've now lost the local copy of my library contents and playlists but I'm pleased to say I can re-download everything I need from the cloud whenever I want to create a new playlist and/or burn to audio CD.
