iTunes 12.7.2 CD Burning Issues

On my Windows 10 PC that hosts my primary iTunes music collection (70000+ songs) just completed the upgrade to the latest iTunes release (shows 12.7.2.58 as the version) via the Apple Software Update process.

After completing the upgrade I attempted to burn the playlists for 4 new classical albums (all MP3 downloads) to CD-R media. The CD burning process for all 4 albums failed with the following error message: "The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred. (0x80004005)".

In each instance the albums played without issue when listening to them via iTunes (and my computer speakers).

Thinking that this may be an issue with iTunes 12.7.2 I logged on to another computer with an iTunes instance that had not been upgraded (the iTunes version on the other PC is 12.7.1.14). I copied the MP3 files for all 4 albums to that iTunes instance and then created playlists for each album. Was able to burn the playlists for all 4 albums to CD media with NO errors.

I will also note that with iTunes 12.7.2.58 I was able to burn one playlist to CD successfully but the burning process was painfully slow (4-5 times slower than normal).

Based on these results it appears to me that iTunes 12.7.2 has some significant bugs/issues relating to burning playlists to CD media.

Rolling back to iTunes 12.7.1.14 may be easier than transferring your playlists into Windows Media Player.

Uninstall iTunes then download and install one of the following as appropriate:

An alternative suggestion is to limit the burn speed to something slower than you would normally use.

Reports suggest Apple are aware of the issue but there is no ETA for a new build.

Thank you for posting this. I upgraded to the new version of iTunes and have experienced the same problems myself this morning, whilst trying to put togther a festive album for a family party.

Disc burning starts fine but then gradually starts to slow down before rejecting the disc and the message " the attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occured ( 0x80004005) "

See alot of people are venting frustration here. You have to remember Apple does not monitor this site. So instead of going off, call support line. Have a conversation with anyone who is there to help. If they tell you they are unfamiliar with problem they probably are. Be intelligent. Reference RogerBats original bug report, the lead comment on this board. Have details. Operating system, iTunes version, when downloaded, error message etc. If you act ***** you'll be forgotten in a hurry. People answering phones are no different than you. If you don't like this message don't respond.

12/12 2 pm. I am on musical hold with Apple right now. Built a playlist this weekend and burned 4 copies. Today, I was listening to the playlist via iTunes at work. Was surprised when the track labeled B.B. King, Please Come Home for Christmas, was actually some rap song I never heard before. I deleted the bad song, re-downloaded B.B. When I attempted to burn the new playlist I got the same error message everyone else here has mentioned (0x80004005). Wasted about 6 disks before I looked and found this info online. Being transferred from one guy at Apple to another. Been on hold through all this typing . . .

12/13 Talked with Apple yesterday. Went back to my computer and rebooted and confirmed that all songs were downloaded. Had the same issue (among others, more to follow). Today I attempted to burn the same playlist from my work computer. All songs were downloaded locally. Burn stopped and same error message popped up about 60% of the way through. I also had similar experiences to those mentioned in other posts:

  • Received the message several time that there was too much content to fit on the disk, although the total was 78 minutes and I had burned the disk before.
  • Disks of the same playlist burned prior to the update were produced without issue.
  • When I attempted to burn other playlists to see if I got a similar error, I encountered a couple of situations in which iTunes indicated that several items on the list "could not be burned." When I looked at the details, including the items that could not be burned, the list was made up of songs that were not on the playlist.

I have a follow-up call in to Apple support this morning.

That is not easy to accomplish. It appears that Apple no longer makes iTunes 12.7.1.14 available on their download site. In my case I was fortunate enough to have multiple computers and have several of them that I had not upgraded to iTunes 12.7.2.58 (I normally upgrade all of them to the newest version, in this case was lucky enough to find the "bug" involving CD burning while I still had several iTunes installs at Version 12.7.1.14).

I think that we can hope that Apple will get this issue resolved soon (with a release of another iTunes version), until then if you need to burn a CD you've seen several tips in earlier responses for how to use Windows Media player and other software tools to accomplish that.

UPDATE: Spent a 90 minutes online with Apple yesterday afternoon. Tech went on my computer with me and I shared with them screenshots and diagnostic reports that were to be sent on to engineering. I am supposed to reconnect with them on Friday or Saturday. Hoping this means the issue is moving up the food chain. I have taken care of my immediate need by using Windows Media Player, but that's not a long-term fix.

I can't find where this is posted! Has anyone seen it? It's my own post. But I've been trying to find it and can't. So I'm reposting it here.

HOLY MOLY! Thank you, thank you, thank you (for posting this)! You mean that
I'm not just going insane?! Well, if I haven't already,
then I'm seriously about to. I have been experiencing the same
issue since I tried to burn a CD last Wednesday evening, so nearly a week ago.
I had successfully burned one about 3 weeks earlier, even though I typically do
it far more often. I have literally been burning CDs now for several years
and have never encountered anything like this. Every time I try to burn a CD, I
get the following error: "The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown
error occurred (0x80004005)." I have also gotten this error at least
twice: "The songs in this playlist will not fit on one Audio CD. Do you
want to create multiple Audio CDs with this playlist split across
them?" The playlists that I was attempting to burn were only about an hour
long, and the CDs that I have can hold up to 80 minutes of music! Oh, and
one message informed me that "iTunes 12.7.2.58 has crashed" and that
a "minidump file has been created in the following location: [with
location listed]," whatever the heck that means!

This has thrown me into a tailspin, LOL. Initially, I thought it was because
I simply needed to update iTunes to the latest version (12.7.2.58 vs.
12.7.1, I believe) so I did but without any luck. Meanwhile, I have wasted
more than 20(!!!) CD-R CDs (AKA "coasters"), have spent hours on my
own trying to Google the error in hopes of fixing the problem, and hours on the
phone with a handful of people (including several senior advisors) from
Apple Tech Support, who have all been extremely nice, mind you, and were willing
to help in any way they could but so far have not been able to resolve the
problem.

I even had my dad's computer tech guy try to help the other night, but nothing we

tried worked either. He said we are not done yet, but I'm convinced that it's an iTunes

issue. Oh, and I have Windows 10 so I've been told that it's a Windows error, perhaps
conflicting with iTunes. But my dad's guy walked me through a quick burn
through Windows Media Player, and that worked. Also, I was actually able to
burn two playlists containing songs that I imported from a CD that I own.
However, I can't burn any playlists containing music that I've legitimately
purchased from iTunes. I have kept all the same settings that I always use
(Maximum Possible for Preferred Speed, Audio CD for Disc Format, and None for
Gap Between Songs), but after the disc initializes to burn, the first song
starts and stops within seconds, my CD is automatically ejected, and once
again, that lovely error (0x80004005) pops up. I even had a call with
Microsoft scheduled for earlier this afternoon, but as of now NO CALL. A senior
advisor from Apple Support is supposed to call me back in a couple of hours
with an update. So sitting tight, but not holding my breath. This
is absolutely crazy! Needless to say, I am not pleased.

This worked like an absolute charm, downloaded the same version and backed up all my songs just to be extra safe. All songs were still in my library when my version 12.7.1 was finished, backup was unnecessary but better safe than sorry. Anyone looking for a work around to this problem, I suggest doing what this man said. Just burned a CD after 2 wasted ones. Thank you very much sir!

Muchos Nachos! Many hours trial and error, few hours with apple support, wasted 20+ CDs, bought another external drive (to return), wept unashamedly, etc. Followed your exact RX...did lose 784 song files ("i")...but remembered "trick' from when my wife's library disappeared...iTunes file in music library, opened, then opened "Previous iTunes Libraries" and hilighted one that preceded the mess....clicked and dragged it onto desktop....THEN, dragged it and released it over the iTunes icon (mine was on task menu)...Fixed, aside from maybe 10 recoverable in usual manner.

CAN I COME OUT NOW?
