iTunes 12.7.2 CD Burning Issues

On my Windows 10 PC that hosts my primary iTunes music collection (70000+ songs) just completed the upgrade to the latest iTunes release (shows 12.7.2.58 as the version) via the Apple Software Update process.

After completing the upgrade I attempted to burn the playlists for 4 new classical albums (all MP3 downloads) to CD-R media. The CD burning process for all 4 albums failed with the following error message: "The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred. (0x80004005)".

In each instance the albums played without issue when listening to them via iTunes (and my computer speakers).

Thinking that this may be an issue with iTunes 12.7.2 I logged on to another computer with an iTunes instance that had not been upgraded (the iTunes version on the other PC is 12.7.1.14). I copied the MP3 files for all 4 albums to that iTunes instance and then created playlists for each album. Was able to burn the playlists for all 4 albums to CD media with NO errors.

I will also note that with iTunes 12.7.2.58 I was able to burn one playlist to CD successfully but the burning process was painfully slow (4-5 times slower than normal).

Based on these results it appears to me that iTunes 12.7.2 has some significant bugs/issues relating to burning playlists to CD media.

Rolling back to iTunes 12.7.1.14 may be easier than transferring your playlists into Windows Media Player.

Uninstall iTunes then download and install one of the following as appropriate:

An alternative suggestion is to limit the burn speed to something slower than you would normally use.

Reports suggest Apple are aware of the issue but there is no ETA for a new build.

When you use the steps in Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash you can go back to the state of your library at the last update that made changes to the structure. I've just checked inside my Previous iTunes Libraries folder and it seems that the last one corresponds to iTunes 12.7.0 all versions of 12.7 use the same format for the database, so you'd only need those steps if you wanted to go back to 12.6.3.6 or earlier.

You should of course Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy, or something similar.

Hello all,

I hope that this helps. I recently had this issue and I was able to resolve it using some information found in this article iTunes for Windows: If you have trouble burning a disc . Specifically there was one suggestion that the article made that was the difference, "

Make sure to select the correct disc format. To create a CD with any type of audio file that iTunes supports (MP3, AAC, AIFF, and so on), try selecting Data CD or DVD. If the playlist you’re trying to burn includes AAC files, make sure MP3 CD is not selected."

In summary change the disc format to Data CD or DVD, this apples to any audio format that iTunes supports, so any song that's playable in iTunes. Again, I hope this helps and please let me know if it does. Peace!

See the iTunes installers section of Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for download links, direct from Apple, and instructions on removing the current build. Install iTunes 12.7.1.14 for now.

Does this uninstall remove playlists I have spent several years creating?

No, you are only removing the current software and reinstalling an older version. Your database remains unchanged. That said I strongly recommend you Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy, or something similar, to protect your data against drive failure and other adverse events.

latest update to the above:

I uninstalled iTunes version 12.7.2.60 and installed iTunes version 12.6.2.20 for which I had luckily kept an old download. This completely solved the CD burning problem.

Note, however, that to make this work I first had to delete the iTunes folder from Music on my hard drive because the older version of iTunes was incompatible with the newer iTunes Library.itl file. So yes I've now lost the local copy of my library contents and playlists but I'm pleased to say I can re-download everything I need from the cloud whenever I want to create a new playlist and/or burn to audio CD.

Ouch, that should not have been necessary. Did you delete the whole library or just the database? Do you have a backup? If you'd gone back to 12.7.1.14 as advised elsewhere in this thread there would have been no problem. When you do need to revert to a version that doesn't want to open the newer library there is a workaround presented in Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash that would minimise the impact.

Installing iTunes also installs Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support, Apple Software Update and Bonjour. Uninstalling iTunes doesn't automatically remove them, and depending on which version you choose to go back to all components need to be removed first. I haven't tested this personally but the reports from other users suggest that the CD burning issue is limited to iTunes for Windows 12.7.2.58 & 12.7.2.60 and that reverting 12.7.1.14 fixes it. Perhaps on this occasion you should try removing all Apple components, reboot, then reinstall the selected build. There is more in the Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates tip.

Make sure that your image file has a simple name like Screenshot.jpg. I asked because apostrophes didn't make sense, but if they are exclamation marks that at least is familiar. The duplication shouldn't have happened if you simply added some iTunes Media to WMP, however if WMP moved the files that would explain the exclamation marks.

When you restart iTunes it assumes that every file is where it is supposed to be until it has reason to find out otherwise. If they come back see Re: Locating all files with !. See also Re: Duplicate songs for advice on removing duplicates. Perhaps you tried adding you media back into iTunes when it didn't work properly?

I take it you don't have a simple backup of the library you can roll back to?

What actions did you perform? I'm pretty sure I can help you undo the damage once I understand exactly what has happened.
