I have the exact same problem and is ruining my whole freaking road trip because my location on the apps keeps jumping around confusing the map app making it recalculate every minute. Been working with support for half of the trip and they have not been able to do anything.
Thank you.
I was having the same issue.
GPS turned on correctly but maps not keeping up with me or drifting. Direction pointing opposite way etc.
I don’t use my phone on a mount as I have been a passanger in the car with this issue.
Your post made me think what was around me. I use my phone case to hold my bank cards which have a magnetic strip. Once I took my phone out of my case my gps issue was fixed. The magnetic strip must have been interfering with the gps.
Well - that's bizarre. I'm on my second iPhone X for this issue, and have gone through two different dash mounts (first was magnetic). I'm still having the issue with the new phone & non magnetic mount.
...in my 2013 Sonata.
So far I've been using CD connected dash mounts, so always in the same spot above the stereo. I assume you had the issue there as well? This could be a coincidence, but it's interesting. I had no issues with my 6s in that same car & mount, but obviously the glass back on the X could make it more susceptible to interference.
I have my fourth follow up call with Apple support Friday. The support guy said he was scheduling it before my Apple store visit to see if his request from engineering has any suggestions. He also scheduled my diagnostic appointment in the Apple store for this Sunday. So we will see what they do. If they replace it I’ll see if it works until I start dropping it on my wireless charger. Overall this is my favorite phone so I hope it’s resolved. My wife has a 7+ works fine and my son has an SE works fine.
It's not your GPS that works fine when you turn the wifi on, it's just that your phone has 3 ways to locate you:
- triangulation of cell towers
- wifi networks around you are already geolocated
- GPS
Ever noticed your phone knows you are home even though your GPS is turned off?
iPhone X on Verizon running 11.3.1-
GPS in both maps and google maps does not work anywhere (occasionally will catch a signal after 15+ minutes) in 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
In 2015 Subaru WRX the same issues occurs most times. Occasionally if I start a route in either app prior to entering the vehicle it will work as it should. However, when I plug the phone into a pioneer unit running CarPlay through a usb connection the GPS fails every time, regardless of the phone location in the vehicle. Sometimes after about 30 minutes the GPS will update my location but does not provide directions or location in real time.
Very frustrating!
I suspect that you’re getting occasional location updates from cell tower data rather than GPS. I had the same characteristics in my 2013 Hyundai. The blue circle moved around my approximate location but never accurate enough to update the route navigation.
Having same issues on my iPhone X running 11.2
Waze actually notifies me that there is no GPS
Apple Maps is not really functional

Good analysis but one question. When the make of the car has been specified in this thread, it's always around a 2012 Hyundai. What is the make of car you're using your iPhone X in?
I have this problem as well. Location services for both map apps (Apple & Google) are and have always been on. I can launch either app, it finds my current location, I can find a new location via search and initiate directions/navigation. However, as soon as I begin driving the app does not follow my location as I'm driving, it seems to think I'm stationary when I'm not. I'm using an iPhone X on iOS 11.2.1
Thank you for providing this troubleshooting steps. However, these steps where provided before and did not solve the issue. This is not a simple "you have to configure GPS the right way" kind of fix. this is a system issue that started to show up to many users after the latest system update.
Thank you. I did. I have an appointment to drop the phone in a week or so. Hopefully they'll find out what's wrong with it. I was hesitant to mention that the problem is related to a system update, however, I spoke with a couple of coworkers and family and reported the same issue just after upgrading to 11.2. I have 11.2.1. It can't be a coincidence, right?
Maybe that worked for your iPhone X, but not mine. I’ve done EVERYTHING Apple Support has recommended, including spending more than 3 hours of my time getting a brand new X at the Verizon store. NONE of the recommendations worked and I still don’t have GPS on my X.
Why is my GPS not working on iPhone X?
