Sleep Wake Failure with High Sierra 10.13.2

Since installing 10.13.2 I have a sleep wake failure on iMac. Was working perfectly before installed latest update on Dec 8.

This is not an uncommon problem but the "fixes/solutions" one reads on the internet are all over the place.

Is there a fix or is this simply something only Apple can solve for all those now plagued by the problem? It is irritating in the extreme.

It isn't a problem with the update. I do not have such a problem. Didn't have a problem with 10.13 or 10.13.1 either. My suggestion is a problem in the underlying system you upgraded. So, the first thing I will recommend you try is this:


  1. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
  2. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support.
  3. Boot into Safe Mode - this takes longer than normal.


The second thing you want to do is:


Repair the Drive for El Capitan or Later


  1. Restart the computer and after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears.
  2. Select Disk Utility and press the Continue button.
  3. Then select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volume entry from the side list.
  4. Click on the First Aid tab in the toolbar and wait for the Done button to activate. Click on it, then quit Disk Utility.
  5. Select Restart from the Apple menu.


The third thing to do is: Download and install the macOS High Sierra 10.13.2 Combo Update.


That's it for now. After the Combo Updater is completed your computer should restart. However, if it does not then restart the computer normally.

Hi guys,


here is my success story.

I had the issue, after installing High Sierra my iMac (27", End 2013) restarted very frequently being in sleep mode and showed me the wake failure after logging in. Very angry with that I've re-installed High Sierra completely anew - this didn't help so I started to look for any third party software especially that, what has any service installed or an automatic update on. And I've found one - in my case this was the Citrix Receiver which has 3 services in background. After de-install Citrix Receiver my High Sierra works fine now, puh!


So guys - look for a third party software I assume, hope this helps someone..

(Realizing that I'm running the risk of premature celebration) I also have had success eliminating this problem by completely uninstalling Citrix Receiver.


I've tried literally everything else suggested here and none of it works, but after uninstalling Citrix Receiver on 03/12/2018 as Roman suggested, I reset my sleep to 1 hour (lately I've had it on "never sleep") and it's been 2 full days without a failure. This is by far the longest it's been without a failure since this whole thing started.


Granted, I kind of need Citrix Receiver to accomplish some work tasks when at home, but hopefully this helps Apple to sort out some sort of reason for this thing...

Just thought I'd provide a status update based on my experience. Since I've installed 10.13.4 Developer Beta 4 going on about 9 days now, I have not encountered the sleep wake failure (with all Energy Saver settings set to default). I have also updated to Developer Beta 5 yesterday and the issue still has not occurred. From my experience, it appears that Apple has resolved this issue starting with the 10.13.4 Developer Beta 4 update.

Nope, not resolved. I have two 21.5 iMacs on a home network, both running Beta 5, one has the sleep wake problem consistently, the other does not. Both machines have very similar set-ups but they are not identical. One is late 2014 - this has the sleep wake problem, the other is late 2015 and does not have the problem. So far I haven't found whatever difference is causing the issue. None of the "fixes" have helped for me. Given that 1) many people have the problem but many people don't, 2) fixes seem to work for some but not all, 3) machines differ, and 4) installed software must differ a lot across the board, 5) problems started for many people with a change of OS ( the introduction of High Sierra), I believe the issue is probably far more complicated than we think and therefore there is no miracle cure. I'm sure Apple are working on it, and we'll get a result one day!

Well here we are MONTHS into this problem and I have sent the Error Report EVERY day to Apple, along with may others I presume, but still no fix or even an acknowledgment from Apple. So the question whether Apple is going to fix this issue or not, is not the only question, another question is this sleep wake failure causing any internal damage to my expensive computer? We know it's annoying, but do we know for sure it's not created other problems?

After updating to 10.13.4 yesterday, I decided to try disabling Power Nap again so that my iMac would actually sleep through the night. When I woke this morning, it did not respond to pressing the keyboard to wake. I had to briefly press the power switch to wake it. It woke, but with the gray screen where it reloads the contents of RAM back from the hard drive. It seems that sometime overnight, it decided that it was low on "battery power" and needed to save RAM contents. This on an iMac always connected to AC power. Sigh.

Since my last post here, a few weeks ago, I have had SWFs every day. Some people mentioned possible 'improvement' with 10.13.4 beta, so I resisted following. Now that the official update was issued, I hoped so much that apple have quietly worked out a solution. In vein.


After a smooth and clean update to 10.13.4, with no applications running, the iMac was left alone for around 24 hours. There were no events. It has been through some sort of sleep (it remains totally unclear, what is the distinction between sleep, stand by and hibernate), as it did go through the 'long' waking up process earlier this morning. Then I opened the Calendar. Did not do anything else. Left it for some while and a couple of hours later I found the dreaded reboot message and all the Sleep Wake Failure reporting stuff as before.


This travesty of customer care is unbelievable.

I had this problem for many a month. Finally decided to erase disk, reinstall High Sierra and restore from time machine backup. In the process, somehow had to create another user. Don't remember the steps to get to the point where one had to create another user. In any case, I did create another user and restored files from time machine backup.


Have not had the problem for more than a month. The trick might be adding a new user and logging in as that one.

I had the same problem on a macbook air (13-inch, Mid 2012, macBookAir5,2) since OSX 10.13.2.

I tried everything proposed on this and on other forums.


Recently, I did 2 things:

1) I downloaded 10.13.4 FULL installer (no combo, the full installer) and reinstalled High Sierra, over the previous installation.

2) I replaced the SSD disk few years ago, I have a OWC Aura Pro 2012 480GB SSD disk. I became aware of a conflict between high sierra and old OWC aura disks. I updated the firmware version to 603ABBF0 (got it from here: OWC Mercury SSD Firmware Updater via USB Drive or CD/DVD Disc). The problem also affects other OWC Aura models (http://macosuninstaller.com/one-click-removal-tutorial/unfortunately-time-owcs-a ura-ssds-not-support-macos-high-sierra/).


Since 1 and 2, the black screen/freeze after sleep, as well as a blinking folder with question mark at boot issue, stopped. I keep my finger crossed. Hope this helps.

Hey! I had the same issue with my iMac ever since I upgraded to Sierra. In fact, the problem was so bad I decided to buy a new iMac.


I had a late 2009 intel core 2 duo iMac, with 16gb ram. Tried resetting everything, fresh installed, downgraded etc, nothing worked


However, just today I fixed the problem! All I had to do was turn off Bluetooth on my iMac, and it now always boots properly, with no sleep wake failure!!


I hope Apple fixes the issue, but try turning off Bluetooth and see if it works!!

I was going to wait a few more weeks to be sure, but it looks like it's a Bluetooth issue for me too. I've been turning off the BT before sleeping the Mac for over 2 hours or so.

It's a hassle, I've got a USB mouse connected and I'm using it to toggle the BT for the BT mouse.

However, I've not had any sleep-wake restart for over two weeks. I will post if this changes, hopefully it won't.
