Sleep Wake Failure with High Sierra 10.13.2

Since installing 10.13.2 I have a sleep wake failure on iMac. Was working perfectly before installed latest update on Dec 8.

This is not an uncommon problem but the "fixes/solutions" one reads on the internet are all over the place.

Is there a fix or is this simply something only Apple can solve for all those now plagued by the problem? It is irritating in the extreme.

It isn't a problem with the update. I do not have such a problem. Didn't have a problem with 10.13 or 10.13.1 either. My suggestion is a problem in the underlying system you upgraded. So, the first thing I will recommend you try is this:

  1. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
  2. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support.
  3. Boot into Safe Mode - this takes longer than normal.

The second thing you want to do is:

Repair the Drive for El Capitan or Later

  1. Restart the computer and after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears.
  2. Select Disk Utility and press the Continue button.
  3. Then select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volume entry from the side list.
  4. Click on the First Aid tab in the toolbar and wait for the Done button to activate. Click on it, then quit Disk Utility.
  5. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

The third thing to do is: Download and install the macOS High Sierra 10.13.2 Combo Update.

That's it for now. After the Combo Updater is completed your computer should restart. However, if it does not then restart the computer normally.

I have had this problem for over a week and have been on to the support team 4 times.

I have been instructed to and have:

Cleared the NVAM

Cleared the SMC

Reinstalled the OS

I have now been told to either travel to an Apple store or go out and buy an external hard drive in order to wipe my iMac completely. My mac has a lot of installed and configured applications that would probably take me 8-10 hours to set back up. After reading through this thread it's unbelievable to me that they would suggest this and waste my time. I am going against their advice as others have stated they have followed all of Apple's suggested steps and to no avail. Not one success story here. First time I've taken to a forum to write anything as I am livid.

This is happening to two of my computers (2 iMacs all others that are laptops are fine). THIS IS A BUG !!!!
They have asked me to wipe my computer and have even asked me do you have any other software on there!!!

Really the only thing that changed was an upgrade to high Sierra the upgrade did not help to the latest 10.13.3!!!

They cannot seem to figure it out... I have been dealing with this for months since High Sierra upgrade.

So I figured something out that could help some of you.

I created a new user on my machine and when I'm on that user it never crashes. I did this about 9 days ago. When I'm on my own user it crashed like two times since then, which is still a very low number. It used to crash multiple times daily before.

Programs are shared between users so you don't need to setup the programs on the new user. Just setup the emails and if you need to work with files from your documents and user folders you can still change users very fast.

Let me know if this helps.

No, it's affecting them too. I've got a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) and _had_ this issue too. It started after upgrading to 10.13.2

I formatted my hard drive in HGFS and installed Sierra to escape the problem. A few days later (after making a clone and deciding I wanted to feel some pain) I upgraded again because...well I didn't really expect the bug not to return but...well it didn't.

So, I've got rid of this _very_ annoying bug which was massive pain but I've no idea why and how it worked. One thing to note is: I tried a clean install of High Sierra and that didn't fix the problem.

I have MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) with the same problem. I went back to Sierra for a while (did that at the genius bar) and that fixed it. Then I assumed after some updates that it was safe to update to High Sierra again - and the problem is back once again with a vengeance!

My advice don't update to HS if you can avoid it.

I have a temporary solution which is to use an app called "InsomniaX" which prevents sleep on lid closure (although it has been known to create overheating problems so you have to watch that closely. I use this when I carry my laptop from one room to another (it the lid closed). Otherwise when I move around it pretty much aways crashes. For longer journeys the computer has to be completely switched off now.

Hi everybody, my MacBook Pro retina 13" late 2012 became extremely hot & drains battery fast while on sleep mode after upgrading to OSX High Sierra. I tried SMC reset & NVRAM many times, failing which, I entered into Recovery mode pressing command plus R on start up, giving first aid to the disc, then reinstalled fresh copy of High Sierra 10.13.3, still the problem remain same. In Activity monitor, I have seen hidd & fud are preventing sleep of Mac. Hope Apple will do the best to support us.

I have tried everything you mentioned except the safe mode and still have the problem. I have resorted to shutting it down and starting it every morning. Since I have done that it hasn't restarted on it's own during the day when I wake it up. Apple has screwed up royally on this one. With as many people that are having these problems this situation surely should have been caught in the testing before release of this piece of crap High Sierra. The developers must have been high when they were working on it. And there doesn't seem to be any urgency to fix it. Very frustrated and ******.

So I can really recommend the method I described in my previous comment, since I haven't had anymore crashes in over a week now.

Create a new user on your computer. Log into this user. Restart the computer from this new user. Log in to your original user. Put your macbook to sleep and pray. 😝

This seems to reconfigure some settings that might solve the problem. Tell me if it works for you!

Unfortunately I must report that after many years of almost glitch free Macbook Pro 15"use since a few months I cannot work efficiently anymore as every day I am faced with the sleep/wake bug. " days ago I reset the "energy saver" setting to default and turned bluetooth off and for almost 48 hrs everything seemed to be normal, than this morning my Mac was again stuck in sleep mode!

My Mac is brand spanking new - got it a few days ago - probably manufactured mid-2017.

Speaking of engineered obsolescence, I got my new Mac because my "ancient" mid-2010 iMac was so slow it was practically unusable (running El Capitan). And - my iPhone 6 died last Summer a month after I paid it off. The dreaded screen of snow. That sure felt like well-timed, engineered obsolescence to me!
