iPhone screen dims randomly

My iPhone X Screen dims on its own For about 10-15 minutes Then gets brighter again All on its own! I do not have auto brightness on I do not have tutone on I have no settings on that would affect the screen it’s very annoying paying $1200 for a phone and this is happening. I love Apple have every single product they make.

ANY THOUGHTS ON WHATS CAUSING THIS?

Thanks!

I also believe that this is a heat related issue. It happens to me almost every day, but it always seems to be when the phone is connected to a charger, and specifically when the phone is warm to the touch.

Wow, I would think there would be some sort of update on what’s going on by now. I have a senior advisor from apple support that is supposed to follow up with me tomorrow regarding an issue I am having with my AirPods. I am going to ask her about this and see if she can provide any updates. I will let this thread know if I find anything out. E

veryone I know that plays games on their iPhone X, is experiencing this same exact issue.

I asked my advisor about this on my call today and she said that I need to take it to the Apple store and have them run diagnostics. So this is obviously a hardware issue that can’t be fixed by an update. Sounds like we are going to have to wait for the iPhone X+ or iPhone XX or whatever the new is going to be called and hope they fix the overheating issue

I know previous posters have taken their X into an Apple Store and have had diagnostic tests run and they show no issues. I am not sure what the issue is. Like today I was using Waze and it was super sunny and my phone did not dim. I did not have it on my dashboard as I had it in between my legs on the seat. I was using my work vehicle and did not have a mount so it was not directly in the sun.

I still think it is something with a sensor. Who knows what the deal is, it is very frustrating.

If

the screen dimming on its own is indeed a hardware issue (which I believe it is) and one that cannot be remedied by an update then we should be financially compensated and fairly. I’ve gone through two iPhone X, wasted way too much time both on multiple phone calls with Apple and time spent in the Apple store 3 different times regarding this issue and lost a batch of images along the way that didn’t complete uploading to the cloud before the Genius deleted my phone’s data having not checked that first.

This is not a minor issue imo, it’s a pain in the *** issue. You know this won’t be happening in the next iPhone X because they will have figured it out. The fact that they don’t acknowledge the issue is a real thumbs down for Apple. I’ve lost a lot of respect for the company because it’s not the first time they’ve blatantly ignored an issue.

That’s what they tell everyone. They’ll run a diagnostic, say the phone is working fine, they’ll check your settings that won’t be causing the issue, they’ll tell you to go home and see if the issue continues. It will continue and you’ll find yourself aggrevated yet in an effort to have a phone with a display that you can easily see with you’ll go back to the store, they’ll replace the phone and you’ll go home only to discover you have the same issue as before.

That’s not going to go well for them. I’ve ripped them a new one in the store before and I’ll do it again. Last time the manager called me, groveling. I won’t accept “go home.” I’ll accept a new phone. If that has a problem, they’ll be dealing with the relevant consumer fraud authorities. I’ve done it before with big companies. They don’t like when they get FTC and FCC inquiries.

Don’t waste your time by going to the. Apple Store. They will run diagnostics then tell you to call Apple! It’s a vicious cycle. I’m about to use that most expensive Protection Plan they tacked on to my “services” when I purchased the 6 years ago. I just haven’t wanted to go through all that mess but it’s inevitable. I’m going to have to take the time just to get a brand new one that does the exact same thing. And, every AT&T and Apple Rep, and Apple Care tell you that you are the FIRST person that has had this issue. I’m going in prepared this time. This is the most talked about problem with the X! No, I am. NOT the only one. Look at all these other X owners that have the exact same ISSUE! It’s definitely not just an issue but a TRUE PROBLEM and you will fix it somehow because I paid over a thousand dollars for a phone without problems. Problems were not part of this transaction.

I’m dimming and brightening back in fourth as I type this response now.

Uggggg

I sympathize, but respectfully disagree. I do appreciate the note about them pretending they've never seen it. That is not going to fly with me. Apple Support said they needed to research the issue and didn't bother taking me through the standard solutions because I told them I tried already. They basically punted and said to go to the store. I have an appointment for tomorrow. In the notes, I mentioned it was a known issue as reported here and elsewhere. I suspect they are going to replace the phone. If it the new one has the same issue, I'll cross that bridge at the time.

I first noticed this issue when with my new iPhone 8 back in November. At the time, the folks at the Apple Store made me run lots of tests including restoring from backup, then installing new OS. They eventually gave me a new replacement phone. I have since given my wife the iPhone 8 and picked up a new iPhone X. I have had the same intermittent dimming issues with the iPhone X. I have tried all the settings folks recommend on this thread. Last week, the folks at the Apple Store replaced my iPhone X with a new one. They didn't even ask this time as I think they are well aware of the issue. I did ask the technician if he knew about a widespread problem. He said he had only seen the issue once before -- hmmm.

I play a lot of Pokemon Go which does use GPS and often I notice the phone warm. The problem isn't related to low charge and doesn't go away if I connect to external battery to charge. I often have to restart the phone, but that doesn't always do the trick.

I don't necessary think this is a hardware issue as others have speculated since it happens on more than just the iPhone X if you've read through this whole thread. I think this is an iOS 11 issue related with the auto-brightness setting being overridden by some environmental factor. Maybe the ambient light sensor is getting confused, but if auto-brightness is turned off, it should not matter.
