iPhone X Excessive Data Usage

I got the iPhone X exactly a week ago. Ever since, I have completely regretted it. All-in-all, the phone is amazing, and I love it... but I have never run into to many issues as I have in the past week with this phone, than I have over the past 5 years that I have owned iPhones.

The phone I had before the X was the 7... I use data once and awhile, but I never go over my data plan which is 4GB per month. The morning after I get the iPhone X, I curiously check my data usage through my cell provider, and I had used almost 1GB. Rogers had stated that I had used almost 1GB of data at 10:34am last Friday (I didn't even have my phone on me as I was in a meeting, and it was connected to WIFI). Ever since, the data usage has been insane on this phone, to the point where I have contacted Apple and they have told me to turn my data usage off so I do not go over my usage. Almost all of my apps have their data usage turned off, I have always had WIFI assist and iCloud drive turned off, as well as background app refresh. It doesn't seem to matter if I am connected to WIFI, the phone seems to still love to eat up the data. Apple has given me no answers, other than the fact that the iPhone X has enhancements that might use cellular data regardless of a wifi connection. But for these enhancements to use so much that I have to actually turn off my data is ridiculous... They haven't been able to give me a more reasonable answer. This phone has become virtually useless to me, the second I turn my cellular back on the feast of data begins. Has anyone else experienced this issue or have any answers? It's sad that this is what it's come to... Apple can't even give me an answer to an issue with their product.

My cellular data usage has dropped significantly by disabling iCloud drive and the Photo Library from uploading via cellular data. Now they only upload when connected to WiFi. Problem was I recorded some videos while I was away from a WiFi and it uploaded the videos to the Photo Library over the cellular connection. I checked my data usage after I got an alert from VZ stating I had reached 90% and I saw huge data usage the same times I was recording videos.

There may be some other oddities like Safari using 50MB to do a search, but I haven't noticed that yet. For the first time since getting the iPhone X, I now have extra data to rollover into next month's usage.

Thanks for your input. Apple has also advised me to monitor my cellular data until Sunday. We have it turned off completely to see if there is possibly an issue with the phone. They stated no data usage should be used while the phone's cellular data connection is off. Sure enough, it is still chewing through data even while I have the connection turned off (and am still connected to wifi). I am not a tech wizard but common sense tells me that this isn't right. I have an appointment with them at 12:30 on Sunday so hopefully they can address and resolve the issue.

Apple is correct is saying that the phone should not use data while cellular is turned off.

Unfortunately, that does not necessarily mean the carrier would show no data being used during that period.

There is a rather big challenge for a user who is trying to match cellular data usage on the phone with carrier records. The user in looking at the carrier record sees data usage typically as it is invoiced rather than necesarily at the time it was actually used.

The problem relates to two separate issues: first, data usage recorded by the carrier is normally higher than what is recorded on the device and second, there can be major differences in timing as the phone records data as used while on the account data usage the carrier shows it when invoiced. For some carriers, especially, MVNOs, this makes reconciliation impossible.

So if your carrier is showing data usage while you actually have the phone turned off, it does not necessarily mean anything nefarious is happening.

However, if you are using a major carrier the lags between invoicing and use should not be large unless data roaming is involved.

Let's hope the matter gets resolved during your appointment.

Thank you again for the responses. I don’t think it is a thief as I am tracking my usage directly from my settings on my phone at the moment. I suppose that would answer the question as to what is seen from my carriers side. At first I was tracking it through my carrier; that’s how I noticed this issue in the first place. I have now been tracking it through system services on my phone and am getting results of data usage through services that I have never even heard of. I guess I’ll have to see what apple thinks tomorrow.

I live in Canada. There are 4 major carriers (hence why some of my posts are in French):

Rogers (and flankers)

Bell (and flankers)

Telus (and flankers)

Shaw (through Freedom Mobile only in BC, AB and ON).

In Quebec, Freedom is replaced by Videotron

In Saskatchewan, Freedom is replaced by SaskTel

Not all providers in Canada are listed, but the major ones are.

My phone definitely does not chew through data when the WiFi is on. I have everything running full tilt and I have never experienced this. I find the phone to be more accurate in terms of Data usage because it might take as long as 24 hours for it to even appear online under my account. I will agree that reconciliation would be almost impossible. Data roaming on my provider might take up to a month to be reflected, but once again, I would use the data logger on my iPhone.

None of those are MNVO's however. The flankers might, but I don't think so.

I don’t think there is a reasonable solution yet. Turning off cellular is not an acceptable option to me considering the cost of these iPhone Xs. It renders the phone useless (no calls, text, email etc while it’s turned off). I was also burning cellular data while on my own WiFi AND while at school teaching. Our only viable choice, to avoid overages, was to the VERIZON Unlimited Plan. For years, we shared 12g between mine and husband phone and NEVER had an issue with cellular data being utilized at inappropriate times.

Hi All,

I am also experiencing this issue.

Issue: I have my mobile data on and connected to my home wifi, however, my data usage is still being deducted from my mobile data allowance. Insane! I was wondering how I could chew through 6GB a month!! + 1GB top up. Luckily I looked more into it, when I got notifications stating I had 500MB data usage left, and, whilst surfing on my home wifi, I got another notification saying I had 200MB left!!

I double check that I'm connected to my wifi connection. I start surfing the net and watching youtube again, I then proceed to check my telco provider app for my usage and to my not so suprise, I have used up 100MB.

Workaround: Turn off my mobile data.

Don't tell me about wifi assist, and turn off location services or apps chewing up data. Using previous models of Iphone, such as iphone 6, we all could clearly log onto our wifi at home and not worry about our phones using our telco provider data usage. Apple needs to acknowledge this is a problem. Surely Apple knows this is a problem, and I will be gladly creating a video and uploading it to show them and everyone there is a real problem here. I will upload the link to this forum soon.

I also think, everyone who has been overcharged with excessive data usage should be reimbursed by Apple.

I‘m from Germany, having Vodafone as provider. All the same issues you reported I‘ve got myself, too. With an iphone8 and since 11.4. currently 11.4.1. More, the excessive usage of 800 MB per 6 days without using anything came with two interesting aspects:

1. the sum of all apps and services amounted to 45MB, the excess was not traceable

2. the Vodafone app also showed this amount but the call center confirmed the 45MB usage!

Resetting the iphone first killed the system, new installation was necessary and for half a day everything worked fine. Today, again, MB are counting up without any link to an app/system service....

Crap ios11.4 I assume
