Messages app badge icon not showing up.

I have an iPad mini 4 running iOS 11.2.1. Since 11.2 I have noticed that when I receive a new text message/iMessage I don’t get the little red circle on the messages icon showing the number of unread messages. I do get notifications just not the red badge on the icon.

Now or this problem was fixed for about a day after updating to 11.2.1 but then came back. I then erased and restored my iPad from backup, which also fixed for a day then broken again. I then did a complete restore and set iPad up as new, and still have the same problem...

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Greetings all and a happy and holy New Year.

with that bit of joy aside, there’s no joy in saying that I’ve got this issue too on an iPad mini 4 running 11.2.1. Had it before, only with iOS 11. Got fixed by doing an erase all. Was working just beautifully. until today. It’s crazy work to reload all the stuff I need to download, so wiping everything out for a THIRD time is just too much.

Anyone have a solution?

Apple, are you reading these forums??

Same problem here...11.2.1 seems to be the issue. I have two iPad Air 2’s, one is running iOS 11.1.1 and has no problem. The one I updated to 11.2.1 does have the issue. Resets work for a short period and problem is back.

Also very slow in having mail updated?? I will not be updating the software on my other iPad for now.

Come on Apple fix the bug!

Thank you. Mine was temporarily fixed after dealing with phone support, so I too have seen that first hand.

i won’t reinstall the iOS. It messes up too much stuff and I don’t believe it will fix anything. Honestly, I’ve worked in IT for 30 years and spent time doing both hardware and software support and I’m not optimistic that they can fix it. I’ve gone through and matched almost every setting on my iphone (which is working fine) and my iPad and can’t see any real setting differences. I have logged off my Apple ID and restarted both devices numerous times. The counter is working for other apps, just not iMessage. So I think it is a code problem. But I’m going to try again, or at least make my case. And my appt is Wednesday, not tomorrow (I’m losing track of time over the holidays!). I’ll keep you posted.

Soooo, no one has gotten a solution so far, correct? When I’ve searched in Apple communities before, I’ve always gotten a solution to a problem. I thought Apple employees helped with these posts.....but guess not? Or, is it monitored only after there are an X number of customers (us) in a thread?

In any case, how does one go about getting the correct solution if Apple isnt aware of the problem?

I agree it was the software update because only after I updated it to my iPad is when the message badge disappeared.

That said, I put the update on my iPhone 7 too, and the message badge shows there just fine.

I went to the Genius Bar this afternoon. The kid was really nice and seemed knowledgeable. I explained to him everything Idid, both on my support call the other day and on my own. After rechecking my settings, he suggested a reset (not a restore of the ios, just a reset). I did this the other day with apple on the call and it fixed the problem for about 1/2 hour. But I agreed to do it again bc it isn’t that big of a deal (unlike the restore which is a huge pain in the butt). We did it and surer than heck, the badges appeared again. But he noticed that my custom home screen did not reset, and he thought that was strange. So we looked and a few other settings weren’t at the factory defaults either. So we did the reset again and this time the the home screen and other settings did reset. So, it’s working now but I’m not sure if it will last. Only time will tell. If you don’t know where the reset is it's under Setting -> General -> Reset -> Reset All Settings (the first one). I’m not going to change any of the defaults for a few days to see if it stays on. Then I’ll slowly change stuff and see if at some point it stops again. The kid agreed it’s definitely software, and said the next step would be a restore, but he understands my reluctance to do that. He couldn’t say how to get Apple to acknowledging this thread and respond, so I don’t know what to do there. If the reset doesn’t work for you and you want ALL the steps I did, let me know. If it stops working I’ll post again here and let you know. (Sorry for the long post).
